From "Rushmore" and "The Royal Tenenbaums" to his latest film, the stop-motion Roald Dahl adaptation "Fantastic Mr. Fox," director Wes Anderson has carved out a reputation for bringing to life some of the quirkiest and most stylized characters in cinema history.

And let's not forget the man himself -- always spiffy with a dash of eccentric in his trademark suits, made by Anderson's longtime tailor Vahram Mateosian of New York City's Mr. Ned. Mateosian spoke to StyleList about how he's helped turn his famous client into a modern-day style icon.

StyleList: How did you first start working with Wes?
Vahram Mateosian: Wes started coming here in 2000. I think that a store in New York that sells suiting fabric recommended my place to him.

SL: How would you describe Wes' signature style?
VM: Well, he definitely likes his clothes very fitted at the shoulders and waist. It ends up looking very natural on him because he's tall and thin. It doesn't work for everyone. And he wears a lot of corduroy, which is very comfortable. Some time ago he wore his pants a little shorter and his jacket sleeves a little shorter, but he hasn't done that for at least five years. [Though, Mr. Fox is wearing just that in Anderson's latest movie.]

SL: What is your favorite Wes Anderson film, and why?
VM: I like them all, but I'm biased! "The Royal Tenenbaums" is special to me because I made some of the clothes for that film. I'm proud that Wes asked me to do it, and I think that I was able to produce the styles that he had envisioned for the characters.

SL: Is it true that puppet makers working on the "Fantastic Mr. Fox" asked you for fabric swatches for the clothes they created for the film?
VM: I've never had contact with the puppet makers. But the rust-colored suit that the fox wears looks awfully familiar. [See above pictures.]

SL: Are there any other notable people that you have worked with?
VM: Yes -- Charles Oakley [former NBA player], David Brown [producer] and others. I've also made a couple of things for Wes' friend Jason Schwartzman [voice of "Ash" in "Fantastic Mr Fox"]. Really nice guy.

SL: What's your number-one piece of advice for guys buying their first suit?
VM: Get something basic that you can wear in any situation: work, festive occasion... Usually plain navy or charcoal gray lightweight wool works best.

SL: What's the biggest suit trend right now?
VM: Very high buttoned jackets with narrow lapels and soft shoulders with very small pads. Mostly two-button jackets. Very form-fitted trousers, as well -- no pleats, thin legs.

SL: What's the biggest suit mistake men make?
VM: Choosing a style that doesn't fit their body type. Guys will look at a magazine and say to themselves, 'Hey, that looks great, that's exactly what I want.' The models in the magazines are six feet tall and weigh 140 pounds -- of course it looks great, how can it not look great?, the guy is in great shape. I can copy the style and the fabric, but most guys are not that body type. If you're having something made, work with your tailor to get the look that's best.

How do you invent a new look for a holiday catalog? If you're J. Crew's creative director Jenna Lyons, you spray-paint some gnome statuettes and smash a few ornaments.

Lyons gives us a first look at J. Crew's holiday catalog (out December 2) and highlights some of the best gift choices.

One of the biggest challenges to this season's catalog is originality, says Lyons. "How do you do holiday without being corny, instantly recognizable but not overdone?" One way J. Crew avoids holiday fatigue is to use the color red only for December catalogs.

"We purposely stay away from red the rest of the year. We don't use red type or photograph red clothes at other times," she explains. When crimson appears this month, "people notice a change. It's subtle but it's a signifier."

The cover and first set of women's pages glow with a deep, winey hue -- spiked with bright, cherry-red accessories: Red ladders, unspooled ribbons, broken ornaments and yes, red-painted gnome figurines give a fun, slightly chaotic look to the photos.

For Lyons, this bit of messiness ties into a core J. Crew concept: "the imperfect perfect." Instead of an impeccable image, the joy's in the lived-in, unpolished detail.

That old-chestnut phrase "the gift that keeps on giving" inspired new temptations. A women's Jewelry of the Month Club and men's Tie of the Month Club join the original shoe club. Every month, members receive a new accessory. These won't be cookie-cutter choices; the selection will be made in real time, to pick up on developing trends throughout the year.



The importance of family is another key theme in this month's catalog. In the men's pages you'll find the Family Guys, each a fellow personally connected with the J. Crew staff who was photographed with loved ones.

And who's that toward the back? Lyons herself, alongside her grinning brother and father. "It was not my idea!" she laughed. "We weren't able to get someone at the last minute so we were stand-ins. I was not the first pick, I'll have you know!" The photo session was a happy impromptu reunion, a gift in itself: "My father was beaming."

Lyons' brother models a Baracuta G9 jacket that he put at the top of his wish list. These classic British waxed-cotton, tartan-lined jackets are a J. Crew exclusive in the U.S. (We ladies will have to be patient a bit longer; a resized women's Baracuta arrives in the spring.)

A pair of menswear-inspired foulard silk pajamas tops Lyons' own wish list, along with a platinum-colored silk bow-tie skirt. "I'll have to order fast since we didn't order too many," she realizes, jumping into the holiday shopping fray along with the rest of us.

Thanksgiving is not exactly thought of as a fashion-friendly holiday. Eating, drinking and watching television lends itself more to a "Snuggie" than a Saint Laurent.

Still, there are ways to look chic while still being comfortable. We've gone to some of our favorite fashion insiders for a word or two of advice.

Designer -- and amazing cook to boot -- Peter Som, says, "Thanksgiving is the ultimate celebration of comfort food, so if you're eating comfort food, it makes sense to make what you wear all about comfort.

"I'd recommend knitwear -- a cozy cashmere sweater in a festive color with a touch of beading or shimmer, or a chic knit or jersey dress that has the right amount of ease (this is not the time to bust out your Alaïa or your [Herve] Leger bandage dress). Remember if you're going for comfort-chic with your clothing, make sure you balance that out with some fabulous heels or bold jewelry."

Donna Karan's solution for the holidays is to offer up her Body Perfect Shapewear as an essential layering piece. These undergarments are not unlike Spanx in their ability to suck, tuck and smooth.

"What makes it so amazing is its sleek and lightweight fabric. It doesn't cling to clothing and it doesn't bulge at the waist or leg. I swear by them." (And check out the designer's new shapewear for spring.)

Rachel Roy is predictably pragmatic chic.

"My favorite save-all piece is a cardi - it hides the tummy and hips, if you so wish. Right now, I am loving a short-sleeve cardi over long-sleeves blouses with pants or long-sleeve dresses."

And J.Crew's creative director, Jenna Lyons borrows from the boys.

"My fail-safe chow-down outfit is skinny pants with a men's shirt, tons of jewels, a boyfriend blazer and heels. No one will know if you have to unzip a bit."

After reports that Victoria Beckham's denim line was dropped from high-end retailers Kitson and Saks Fifth Avenue earlier this year, the posh mother of three is set to relaunch the brand in Spring 2010, according to Elle UK.

The collection, formerly known as dVb, has been renamed "Victoria Beckham Denim" and will skew more high-end, as well as "sharper and sleeker," says the British magazine, which ran pictures of the new styles.

Focusing on super-slim cigarette pants in both traditional washes and light pastel hues, along with bright leggings, a slouchy boyfriend jean, roughed up denim jackets and vests and crotch-skimming cut-offs, we expect a better response this time around. Especially if Beckham's dress line is any indication.

But recessionistas shouldn't get their hopes up -- prices will reportedly start at around $235.

In New York, the festive season officially - and literally! - kicks off with the Rockettes at Radio City's annual Christmas Spectacular. For our first annual holiday dress guide, we enlisted four of the long-legged beauties to model a plethora of party dresses. The resulting images - taken by photographer Eric Ray Davidson - showcase the beautiful gams of the Rockettes and fanciful garments created by the likes of Diane von Furstenberg, Tracy Reese and more.

Shot in the legendary concert hall, this year's range of flouncy cocktail frocks dovetailed nicely with the impressive art deco surroundings in the Rockettes' performance space. There were gold and silver shimmering numbers, one-shoulder confections, and ornate pieces with detailed beading and bejeweled necklines.

The end of an era. InStyle Weddings is shuttering.

InStyle Weddings is closing. The last issue will come out Christmas day.

InStyle Weddings is the number one wedding magazine on the market, with an annual circulation of 2.6 million, Fashion Week Daily reports. The closure is apparently another casualty of the changing bridal market, hit hard by the economy, according to the site.

The quarterly, in keeping with its parent publication, focuses on celebrity weddings, sharing details on nuptials of the likes of Drew Barrymore and Marcia Cross.

While the magazine has delighted readers eager to hear exactly what kind of flowers their favorite stars chose, or who made their party favors, several stars covered in the magazine ended up separated of calling off an engagement altogether.

The New York Times called it "the curse of the InStyle Wedding" when weddings or engagements of Barrymore, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Avril Lavigne and Shannon Elizabeth went sour.

InStyle Weddings is the third bridal title to close in the past few weeks, with Elegant Bride and Modern Bride, both Conde Nast publications, folding last month.

The magazine launched back around the turn of the century, right around the time of the dot-com boom (and bust). Fueled by the Internet, America's celebrity culture was hot.

But the wedding industry has evolved. With dozens of beautiful blogs chronicling real people's weddings and elaborate guides to personal DIY touches (we love snippetandink.com and oncewed.com), prospective brides have numerous places to find ideas, and many couples on which to model their ceremonies.

And even though the average cost of a wedding is now between $21,000 and $24,000, according to Richard Markel, president of the Association for Wedding Professionals, as quoted on SmartMoney.com, most brides in today's economy are looking for realistic ways to save money when planning their big day.

That said, we'll miss InStyle Weddings, where every wedding was perfect and planned down to the smallest detail. And who doesn't want to see how beauties like Christina Hendricks celebrate their nuptials? Here's hoping they continue to cover celeb weddings in their main monthly title.

Mark your calendars for November 30 -- that's when the Maison Martin Margiela Artisanal Collection will be available for the first time ever online, at Yoox.com. (It was previously sold exclusively at Margiela boutiques.)

The avant-garde Maison Martin Margiela label has had a cult-following since the '80s. And the artsy Artisinal Collection (including both men's and women's garments) will feature rare, one-off pieces that have been reworked by hand in Margiela's Parisian atelier.

Starting on Monday, Yoox.com will devote a special section of its Website to the 100 garments for sale, which include a "disco ball top" covered in mini mirrored squares, a dress made out of records, a wedding gown created from three other vintage wedding dresses, and the shaggy Margiela wigs jacket, which is, as it sounds, made out of wigs.

Each of the pricey pieces will be on the site until they sell out and a portion of all proceeds will go to the Rosa Spier House in Holland, a non-profit organization offering housing to retired artists and academics.

Looks like the Emanuel Ungaro execs have stopped bickering and come to a decision over Lindsay Lohan's fate as the company's artistic advisor. The shocker? LiLo is here to stay!

President and chief executive of the Paris fashion house, Mounir Moufarridge, confirmed today that Lohan is staying on as artistic advisor, despite her debut collection being slammed by critics, reports Reuters.

Moufarridge defends the headline-making 23-year-old, telling the source, "The criticism was harsh. I am sure we can do better in the collection to be honest but I think it was harsh ... But it did sell well."

And while Emanuel Ungaro himself may have something different to say about that -- the retired designer declared Lohan's collaboration with Estrella Archs a "disaster," Moufarridge apparently could care less.

"Mr. Ungaro has his views, he can keep them. I have no comment," he told the news site.

Moufarridge has a track record of stirring up fashion drama. The executive controversially replaced Karl Lagerfeld with Stella McCartney while he was president of Chloé .

The house of Ungaro may be keeping the crash-and-burn star on payroll, but jeweler Pascal Mouawad isn't so quick to jump on the La Lohan ship.

Steve Madden and Zappos.com 'Sole Search' Contest

Think you got what it takes to woo Steve Madden with your shoe design?

The master of funky, affordable footwear, Steve Madden, has teamed up with Zappos.com to give footwear fiends a chance to design their own Steve Madden shoe to be produced and sold by the online retail giant.

The "Sole Search" contest is going on now through Dec. 24. After all of the entries are compiled, three lucky finalists -- one each from the boot, heel and flat categories -- will be selected to meet with Steve Madden himself in New York (yep, that's a free trip, too), where the shoe mogul will choose the winning design, which will then be produced by his company.

"I'm looking for insouciance and originality," the designer told StyleList exclusively (along with giving Lady Gaga a "Yay" and Alexander McQueen's crazy mutant shoes a "Nay," when asked).

But at the same time, he warns contest entrants, "Try not to be different for the sake of being different."

Don't have an iota of design experience? Fear not. While competitors can create their designs from scratch, others can download Steve Madden templates and patterns to get the creative juices flowing.
