Winter Hair Care Tips

Taking care of you hair during the winter goes way beyond deep conditioning (though that is important). We asked the pros for tips on how to care for heat, wind and hat-havocked hair. Read on to find out why you need a paddle brush, highlights and an ionic blow dryer.

Getty Images

"Great looking hair starts with a great cut, and it ensures your hair looks its best during the winter months, " says beauty expert Kyan Douglas. Plus, when you get a good cut, it requires less heat and product styling, which means less damage to the hair.

Getty Images

There's nothing more damaging to the hair than heat styling, particularly if you use more than one thermal-activated tool. If possible, let your hair air dry during the winter months. If you don't have the time (or patience) to do it naturally, Douglas recommends investing in an ionic hair dryer. "They dry your hair with less heat in less time," he says. Translation: less damage.

TRY:
Conair Lightweight Ionic Ceramic Styler Dryer

Jupiter Images

If you can get away with it, shampoo less. "Over shampooing strips the hair of its natural oils," says Douglas, and those natural oils are what keep the scalpand your hairhealthy. If you have hair that needs to be washed daily, try a sulfate-free shampoo. They're less drying and irritating to the scalp, which is particularly important in the dead of winter.

TRY:
Her Cut Dry Hair Shampoo
David Babaii Hydrating Moisturizing Shampoo

Jupiter Images

It goes without saying: deep conditioning the hair during the winter is essential. Between indoor heat (particularly radiator heat), wind and hats, the hair takes quite a beating. Once or twice a week, treat hair to an intense treatment or mask.

TRY:
Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask

Courtesy of Kerastase

Just like you swap your flip-flops for snow boots, the pros suggest switching your gel-based styling product to a more emollient type for the winter. Products that contain humectants, which attract moisture to the hair, are most beneficial. If you're completely hooked on hair gel, which has a greater tendency to flake and dry the hair out in cold weather, Douglas suggests mixing your own product cocktail: one part favorite hair gel to one part moisturizing styling product.

TRY:
Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Cream
Living Proof Wave Shaping Curl Defining Styling Cream

Courtesy of Fekkai

When the hair shaft is roughed up and the cuticle is lifted, hair appears dull and damaged. To keep locks looking healthy and full of shine, seal the cuticle. The two simplest ways to get and keep it closed: rinse the hair with cool water before exiting the shower and use the nozzle attachment on your blow dryer to streamline the airflow downward.

Corbis

"Brushing the hair with a paddle brush is a great way to move the scalp's natural oils to the ends of the hair for added protection," says Douglas. It's a great tool to control static, too. When static strikes, spray the brush with a little hairspray and run it through the hair.

TRY:
Aveda Wooden Paddle Brush

Courtesy of Aveda

Looking a little dull? Get highlights. "They brighten your skin tone, bring out your eyes and add depth to monochromatic color," says Kyle White, senior colorist at the Oscar Blandi Salon in New York City. If doing it yourself, notes White, choose a shade that is no more than two shades lighter than your base color. This ensures the most natural-looking results.

Courtesy of Garnier

It's the equivalent of smoothing the skin with a touch of shimmer; a hair gloss instantly adds luster to lifeless locks. According to White, glosses add richness and radiance to the hair, as well as luminosity to the complexion. "Using a gloss adds warmth to your hair color, which brings out the warmth in your skin. It works in much the same way as a certain color clothing can pop your skin tone."

The smoke and mirrors surrounding the beauty industry are slowing chipping away.

Thanks to outrage over airbrushing nightmares and models exposing the ugly side of modeling, is it possible that unattainable beauty ideals are fading?

The latest semi-scandal involves a television ad in the UK for L'Oréal Elvive Full Restore 5 hair care line (not available in the US). The ad (watch it above) features singer Cheryl Cole praising the collection for making her chestnut locks "full of life, replenished with healthy shine."

There's just one problem. Cole is wearing hair extensions -- and people are angry about it. The London Times reports that Cole has been not-so-secretly sporting extensions for several years now and they are a part of her look, but that hasn't stopped viewers from expressing their outrage.

L'Oréal's stance is that they are within their legal rights -- a message quickly flashes on the screen to state "styled with some natural hair extensions." Did you catch it?

So here's the question: Is this false advertising? And are women being force fed unrealistic visions of beauty that ultimately make them feel worse about themselves?

The other side of the coin is this -- who really believes it? Do women who see the ad really believe it's Cole's natural hair or is everyone jaded enough to realize what's going on? By now we've seen enough weekly tabloid "Stars Without Makeup" exposé features to see that even A-listers look like crud when they're at the grocery store.

This isn't the first (or last) time beauty ads have come under fire. Rimmel got in truh-ble a few years ago for digitally enhancing Kate Moss' eyelashes for a mascara ad.

Must-have product alert! Shu Uemura Art of Hair launched Essence Absolue just two short weeks ago and it quickly flew out of salons -- it's completely sold out and waiting lists are forming.

So why the hype? Apparently it's a magic elixir for dry hair -- it intensely hydrates, adds shine, and makes hair healthier overall.

Ok, fine -- but we've heard that song and dance before. To get to the bottom of this we asked salon professionals why their clients go nuts for Essence Absolue.

Daniel Jones, co-owner of Muse Salon in Alpharetta, GA says, "This product is incredible. Quite simply, there have been so many other products on the market that try to mimic what Essence Absolue does. This product makes for a perfect blow dry and closes the cuticle so your hair is left with a beautiful luster."

According to Joseph Cozza, owner of Joseph Cozza Salon in San Francisco, "It is the one product that can control frizz, tame waves and add shine and volume to almost any hair type."

And Bobby Cooper, founder of Bobby Cooper Salon in Indianapolis, IN says, "I love how sheer this product is on the hair. It really is the best product I have found to fill in the dry porous areas because it is so moisturizing."

We're convinced!

The peeps at Shu Uemura told us they are trying to push production and get more product into salons and online by mid-December. You can add your name to the waiting list at shuuemuraartofhair-usa.com.

TIP: If you overdose on your favorite styling product and don't have time to rewash your hair, try applying dry shampoo. It instantly absorbs excess oil and product build-up so hair looks freshly shampooed.

To get the look: apply a volumizer directly to the roots of damp hair and rough dry with a blow dryer. Set the hair with Velcro rollers and let sit for five minutes. Remove the rollers, flip head upside down and blast hair with a shot of cool air from the blow dryer. Using a large barrel curling iron, add a few curls for enhanced softness. Finish with hairspray.

It was America the beautiful at the 2009 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Her sleek, side-swept ponytail was a red carpet head turner and the perfect complement to her strapless gown.
To get the look: If you have curly or textured hair, Bertolotti recommends applying a straightening balm to control frizz and ensure the hair stays smooth. Once applied, blow dry the hair straight, then use a two-inch barrel curling iron to flip the ends. Smooth on a drop of shine serum to tame flyaways and boost shine, then part the hair slightly off center and pull it back into a low ponytail.

Steve Granitz, WireImage

Jessica Biel was the mane attraction at an awards show in Beverly Hills. Her perfectly tousled locks looked effortlessly stylish. "It's such a versatile look," says Bertolotti. "You can wear this style to a formal event or with a pair of jeans."
To get the look: Apply hair gel to damp hair and blow dry. "Hair gel creates a great base when adding curls," says Bertolotti. Working with two-inch sections, spray the hair with hairspray, curl with a small barrel curling iron (about one inch), and spray with hairspray again. The hairspray is essential to help hold the curl, adds Bertolotti. When finished, gently shake the head to loosen the curl and hairspray for additional hold.

Jason Kempin, Getty Images

Drew Barrymore took volume to a new and unflattering level. At the 2009 Golden Globe awards her hair looked ready for lift off, which made her face look tiny. A little less body (and flyaways) would have kept her hair and face in better proportion.

Steve Granitz, WireImage

Who else but Jennifer Aniston can pull off a French braid at an Oscar party? The star looked stunning in a simple, yet elegant style. "This look is a great way to keep your hair out of your face while still wearing it down," says Bertolloti. Plus, it works on the red carpet or a dinner out.
To get the look: Apply a wave enhancing spray to damp hair and allow to air dry for a naturally tousled effect. (You can also use a diffuser to create the same look in less time.) Grab a one-inch section of hair from the top front of the head that measure temple to temple. Apply a drop of styling cream to the section to control flyaways and hold the hair together while braiding. To French braid, pull small sections of hair from the face frame in and secure. If you can't French braid, Bertolotti says a regular braid secured to the head with bobby pins will create a similar effect.
Hair gel has come a really long way, even though you would never guess it by Megan Fox's overly slick hair at the 2009 MTV Awards.

The star went overboard with her hair gel, using it to create a faux mullet -- a look that works on fashion-forward runways, but looks wet and a little weird on the red carpet.

Megan's damp 'do aside, if you've sworn off hair gel in favor of other styling products, the gals from Glamour magazine are asking you to give it a second chance.

The crunchy technicolor goop from decades past (think hot pink LA Looks gel, circa 1990) has been replaced by high tech formulas that can help achieve any style you desire - from natural voluminous to wet and sculpted.

In the gallery below, Glamour shows you why you'll want to give the gel trend a try (again) -- this time without the stirrup leggings, overteased hair and snap bracelets.

While we're used to seeing her with sexy curls, Megan Fox is just as stunning with a sleek center part and pulled-back 'do. For a smooth gelled finish like Fox's-without having to worry about any crispiness and dry flakes-senior stylist Nicole Descoteaux of Butterfly Salon in New York City says, "Never let gel air-dry. Instead, mix it with an oil-based product-like Shu Uemura Art of Hair Silk Oil --or a styling cream to prevent it from looking hard and retro."

Go from girl next door to super glam with a budge-proof, sophisticated side part. This look from Tommy Hilfiger's fall show is as easy as it is chic.
DON'T Saran Wrap your hair.
Gwen Stefani never gets it wrong. While she's working her signature old-Hollywood red-lipped pout, the gelled French twist gives her look a futuristic feel-not to mention major staying power! According to L'Oreal, we could all be kissing our gray hairs adieu in a mere 10 years.

The beauty company is working on a breakthrough treatment geared towards ending gray hair for good. They expect it to consist of an oral element backed by a hair care range, and be available within 10 years, reported the Daily Mail.

Hair gets its hue from melanocytes, pigment cells that give color to both the skin and the hair.

"When hair goes gray, there is a progressive disappearance of the melanocytes from the hair. While there are still melanocytes in the hair, there is still hope that it could be re-pigmented," Patricia Pineau, L'Oreal Research Communications Director told the paper.

"Hair is an enigma," she added. "It's a fiber, a material with physical properties. It is also a living organ that grows, grays and falls out. How can we fight this? Do we need a physical approach or a biological approach?"

An oral program supplemented with a hair care program would do both, targeting graying from both the inside and out.

A top focus of the beauty company's since it was founded over 100 years ago, L'Oreal spends over £581 million pounds last year on research -- about twice as much as its competitors.
Gray Hair Cure Available in 10 Years, Says L'Oreal originally appeared on StyleList on Mon, 26 Oct 2009 13:45:00 EST. Did you know that 83% of consumers make a mistake the first time they pick a box color?

That's what world-renowned celebrity colorist Kelly Van Gogh has set out to change. "There's no reason on this earth to have 52 shades of brown," she tells StyleList. "It's redundant and confusing."

And at the salon, you'll get the perfect hue, but who has the time (and money) it takes for touch ups every few weeks?

Van Gogh heard these frustrations from her clients -- and she didn't have a solution. "Color needs maintenance but I couldn't get to my clients every three weeks. They were asking for help, but there wasn't an at-home box color I could recommend," she told StyleList.

So she invented her own: Kelly Van Gogh Root Rehab at-home color system and Heads Up at-home highlighting system take the guesswork out of at-home color maintenance, starting with simplifying the color choice process.
Continue reading Kelly Van Gogh Root Rehab - DIY Hair Color Made Easy

Kelly Van Gogh Root Rehab - DIY Hair Color Made Easy originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 16:00:00 EST.
Another day, another blonde celebrity.

This fall, brunettes have been biting the dust like mad, trading their darker locks for a "funner," lighter hue.

But Refinery 29 brings up a great point: If Kim Kardashian's hair counts as blonde, is Raquel Zimmerman's considered radioactive white? And what about Taylor Momsen, Ashley Tisdale, and LiLo? (if you can see past her alleged plastic surgery, that is)

The edgy style site has created a handy Blonde-O-Sphere graphic to help us figure it all out. It chronicles the different types of blondes - from avant-blondes, to secret blondes-in-hiding (suicidal blondes?) to a whole new category of blonde, called "bronde." (that would be you Alexa Chung!).

Check out the Blonde-O-Sphere, and tell us how you prefer your blonde.
Blonde-o-Sphere: How-To Classify Celebrity Blondes originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 13:55:00 EST. Stylist Nicole Gache of NYCs Valery Joseph Salon is the brains behind the high-impact look, and it's not an easy one to achieve. "We worked on her hair for three days straight, coloring it gradually with a lot of conditioning treatments," says Gache. So if you're thinking of the same look, "It's important to see a good colorist," Gache cautions. "Gradual treatments with heavy conditioning is key."

Heather Graham's Hair Housecalls. If you were wondering how celebrities find time to stay coiffed, here's one secret: house calls. NYC stylist Adrian De Berardinis of the De Berardinis Salon recently paid a visit to Graham at her NYC pad for a trim. Berardinis told us he used a cool new blow-drier called the Cricket Q-ZONE, which has a special silent motor that won't drown out client-stylist chit chat.

Mary-Louise Parker's Blowouts. When stars like Mary-Louise Parker and Rosanna Arquette just want a quick blowout, they head to Blow, the New York Blow Dry Bar. The space, dedicated to the art of the blow-dry (though they offer other services, too) is a favorite of anyone looking for a no-frills, smooth-every-time style. New product offerings, like the specially designed shower cap, help seal out humidity and keep your blowout in-tact through a shower--a plus for us non-celebs looking to make our investment last a few days.

Style Censorship Alert! Japan announced today that it's cracking down on the style antics of its competitive swimmers.

Swimmers may face lifetime bans from the sport if they decorate their fingernails or wear bright polish, dye their hair, or wear earrings. This may be a tough bill to face in a culture that's all about self expression - and revered for its creative nail art.

The ruling, according to Reuters, is to prevent swimmers from showing up for competitions looking more rockstar chic than diver geek.

"The United States and Australia are also setting these criteria," the Japan Swimming Federation's executive director Masafumi Izumi told local media Wednesday, after the stringent new plan had been been written into its charter. Swimmers will have to sign a letter of oath stating they'll abide by these new rules.

Fashion forward rule-breakers face being booted off the team and sent home in disgrace, a suspension of up to five years or even a lifetime ban.

This is the latest in a recent string of beauty bans - Tajikistan just banned beards for teachers under 50.

Japan to Swimmers: No Nail Polish, Hair Dye or Earrings originally appeared on StyleList on Wed, 21 Oct 2009 13:27:00 EST. "High School Musical" star Ashley Tisdale was seen leaving an LA salon on Tuesday after getting some new blonde hair extensions.

Fans had just gotten used to the formerly light-haired star as a brunette, but it looks like Ashley Tisdale believes blondes have more fun -- at least if her new hair extensions are any indication.

The actress follows stars like Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears, who have both recently extended their long, blonde locks via human hair pieces.

Time will tell whether the new shade is for an upcoming appearance, movie roll, or just because. We're hoping it has something to do with "Teen Witch," a remake of the cult-classic '80s movie that Ashley is slated to star in next year.

Check out Ashley and other star's who've gone blonde below:

Last night, Jessica Simpson and Ken Paves attended the QVC and FFANY Shoes on Sale event for charity. And while we definitely wanted the dish on Simpson's famous hair, we couldn't help but ask what celeb stylist Ken Paves would do for Kate Gosselin's famous 'do:

"Something a little bit less disconnected and drastic," he said, without hesitation.

StyleList: So, more like a bob or a shag? Something totally different?

"No, I like it," Ken replied. "A little bit more fluid, a little bit softer, a little bit more feminine. I think she's beautiful and she has a great figure after 8 kids!"

And how does Jessica keep her hair so fabulous with all of the constant processing?

"Not washing [her] hair as often, good shampoo and conditioner," he told StyleList. "I also love Moroccan Oil, olive oil is an amazing conditioner."

But luck also has something to do it, as Ken cites Jessica's "girl-next-door tangibility" as the key to her great hair.

"That's her hair, we don't try to make it anything it's not, it's just really beautiful, flowy hair."

How lucky is that?

We just had one final question--are any of Ken's other celebrity clients getting a little help from his famous hair extensions line? (Jessica is a fan, and co-creator.)

"I use my extensions on everybody, you know--Jennifer Lopez, Eva Longoria, I do some great things for Gaga, Victoria Beckham, all my girls. I pull out all the stops!

The event, which Simpson hosted, was a big success for benefitting Breast Cancer awareness. "Both my grandmothers suffered from Breast Cancer. One was a survivor and one wasnt," Jessica told QVC correspondent and "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style" co-host Grechen Monahan.

So when QVC approached Simpson with the idea of a charity shoe sale, she jumped at the chance. "I mean, I'll make a shoe for it, of course!
This just in: Blondes really do have more fun.

That is, if your idea of a good time is standing in front of a mirror and putting on makeup (woo hoo!).

A new survey conducted by Goody hair care revealed that blondes spend six more minutes per day than brunettes getting ready -- totaling 22 days of the year, compared to 19 for dark-haired gals, as reported by The Telegraph.

According to the survey, blondes reportedly devote 72 minutes per day on their beauty regimen, while brunettes take 66 minutes.

Continue reading OMG! StyleList fans have spoken - and Jessica Alba listened.

The star, who went from blonde to red on September 28th, quickly dyed her locks back to a more natural-looking shade of dark brown three days later.

It must have been because StyleList readers hated the new shade.
In our poll, 86% of over 25,000 voters preferred Alba in dark locks, while only 11% and 3% liked the red and blonde looks, respectively.

We wonder why the quick change: was the hair color switcharoo for a role, or did Alba just dislike her carrot top as much as you did?

And what's next - Black locks? Well, it would be right in line with the current Goth moment.
Shade Shifter! Drew Barrymore was sporting some punk two-tone hair (above right) up until the premiere of her new movie "Whip It" (out tonight).

For the red carpet, Drew Barrymore pulled a fashion about-face in a slinky black L'Wren Scott dress, Neil Lane jewelry and brand new hair (above left).

It appears that instead of bleaching those unsightly ends back to normal, Barrymore (or her stylist) simply snipped them off.

Meanwhile, the movie -- which involved some intense Roller Derby training for Drew Barrymore and Ellen Page -- was almost upstaged by the stars' racy photo shoots.

The actresses have been seen straddling each other and kissing in magazine spreads for Vs. and Marie Claire.

Let's hope the film lives up to the hype!

We first met Drew Barrymore in "ET," and many of us will always remember her this way: Pretty, wide-eyed, with pinch-ready cheeks and pigtails. And the flowers in her hair? Just a hint at another Drew signature look that would come years later.

Barry King, WireImage

After her acting debut, Drew found herself thrust into the Hollywood scene, and quickly rebelled through her fashion and beauty choices. Most pre-teens wouldn't be allowed out of the house with red lipstick, but wild girl Drew made it a regular in her beauty arsenal.

At the "Batman Forever" Los Angeles premiere, Drew debuted her signature 90's look--curled hair, complete with Daisy adornment, thinly plucked brows, pale skin, and bold lips. Perhaps pal Courtney Love (then lead singer of "Hole") had influenced Drew's beauty?

Once the 90's came to a close, Drew began to gain interest in producing and directing, and subsequently cleaned up her look. At the 7th Annual Blockbuster Awards at the Shrine Auditorium, she wears a sleek cropped hairstyle (with her signature flower tucked behind one ear), and just a hint of green eyeshadow to edge out an otherwise simple and pretty look.
