Last night we hit up the three year anniversary cocktail party in honor of colorist-to-the-stars Rita Hazan's Manhattan salon, which is a mecca of cool amidst an otherwise stuffy neighborhood (5th Avenue and 56th street).

"It's a younger, more fashion-oriented salon," Hazan told me.

Hazan -- a regular on The Oprah Show -- is one of (and this is no exaggeration) the most in-demand hair colorists out there, and her celebrity client list is about 120 people long. Her handiwork has been seen on Jessica Biel, Heidi Klum, and Gwyneth Paltrow, just to name a few.

Hazan's full service salon caters to every beauty need -- hair cut/color, styling, waxing, facials, nails and spray tans. "It's a one stop shop," she said. "And everyone who works here is amazing. I'm a stickler for that."

I couldn't pass up the opportunity to ask Hazan what's new in hair color. "Subtle color is in," she explained. "Stripey and streaky is out -- and no roots showing. The look now is sophisticated and sexy."

Black (hair, that is) is definitely having its moment.

From rich espresso to jet black, Hollywood stars, pop singers, and models are dying their locks dark this fall.

Ashlee Simpson-Wentz recently toned down her fiery red strands reportedly in preparation for her new role as Roxie Hart in the Broadway musical production of Chicago. While the rocker mommy is no stranger to the dark hue, we are a bit torn on Ashlee's hair transformation.

Actress Robin Wright nearly sent us into a beauty spiral when she debuted this deep shade at the New York City screening of The Private Lives of Pippa. But Wright's drastic shift from blonde to black brings out her cool, blue eyes and adds warmth to her pale skin.
Twilight starlet Kristen Stewart and model Agyness Deyn are also rocking black hairdos - whether sleek or blunt, the styles play up the versatility of the color.
Robin Wright Penn debuted newly darkened locks, which looked like a deep shade of cool espresso.

When we regular gals have a bad hair day, it's probably because we're either too lazy (read: broke) to hit the hair salon.

But when a supermodel like Kate Moss is flashing dark roots and a messy mane, as she was last night (above right), something more sinister must be at play.

Like the rumor that the usually well-coiffed catwalker has fallen out with her hair stylist buddy James Brown and is reportedly doing her own hair, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The paper is speculating that Brown's reality show, "James' Salon," has caused him and his star client to clash after Moss reportedly balked at having too-prominent of a role in the series, rather than a cameo.

"It has become 'The Kate Show,'" she reportedly sniped to pals, sources told the Daily Mail.

Brown also admitted to the paper on Sunday that he is hoping to focus more on cutting hair, and that he only "sometimes" tends to Moss' hair.

"She maintains her hair herself nowadays," he said.

In that case, Kate, we have a tip: It's called Nice 'n Easy!

Maybe Kate Moss has been too busy throwing model parties for eight-year-olds to tame her tresses?
Kate Moss' Dark Roots and Messy Hair. While we love Christina Aguilera for her chameleonic beauty tricks, we're not totally enamored with her skunklike highlights. Christina, we beg of you: Pick one hair color (and we must say, we love you as a blond).

Robert Mora, Getty Images

Disaster #2: Orange glow
While Scarlett Johansson often pulls off the old-Hollywood look perfectly, the orange tint in her hair comes across as more geriatric than Jean Harlow.

Dave M. Benett, Getty Images

Disaster #3: Crazy highlights
In the early days of her career, Jessica Simpson experimented-unsuccessfully-with streaks and highlights. Thank goodness she later met Ken Paves: The hair guru's lustrous extensions and style expertise made Simpson a hair DO.

Jeffrey Mayer, WireImage

Disaster #4: Off-color color
Before becoming a Hollywood golden girl, Nicole Richie was more of a black, white and red gal. We applaud the blond new mommy for both cleaning up her act and settling on one gorgeous hair color!

Jeffrey Mayer, WireImage

Disaster #5: Bleach babe
While Rihanna always has an inspiring hairstyle-from her head-turning bob to her new pixie cut-the oddly placed, single bleached tendril is one trend to skip. When you wear hip, edgy makeup like she does, there's no need for kooky hair color.

Steve Granitz, WireImage

Disaster #6: Distracting dyes
Dear Joss Stone: It's hard to pay attention to your awesome voice and stunning blue eyes when your long, multicolor hair gets in the way! Stay true to your naturally beautiful self and skip the dye job next time!

Jamie McCarthy, WireImage

Disaster #7: Not so pretty in pink
Cute girl-next-door star Rachel McAdams shocked us when she turned up on the red carpet with pink-and-blond hair. Leave the candy colors to rebel rockers-like Pink, Avril Lavigne and Lily Allen-and proudly work own your natural color.

(Unless of course, you go pink to support a good cause!
Arnold Turner, WireImage

Disaster #9: Scarlet letter
As her costume ideas for Cashmere Mafia and Sex and the City illustrate, Patricia Field clearly has a great eye for color-but mostly when it comes to clothes! While we love that she's stuck to her own signature shade, it'd be cool to see what her real hair color is.

Junko Kimura, Getty Images

Disaster #10: Hyper-hues overload
At the MTV Awards, Keri Hilson sported too many hair colors to count. It is possible to have too much of a good thing: Keep the two-tone look to your nail polish and focus on one main makeup color-like Keri Hilson's green eyeliner.

According to L'Oreal, we could all be kissing our gray hairs adieu in a mere 10 years.

The beauty company is working on a breakthrough treatment geared towards ending gray hair for good. They expect it to consist of an oral element backed by a hair care range, and be available within 10 years, reported the Daily Mail.

Hair gets its hue from melanocytes, pigment cells that give color to both the skin and the hair.

"When hair goes gray, there is a progressive disappearance of the melanocytes from the hair. While there are still melanocytes in the hair, there is still hope that it could be re-pigmented," Patricia Pineau, L'Oreal Research Communications Director told the paper.

"Hair is an enigma," she added. "It's a fiber, a material with physical properties. It is also a living organ that grows, grays and falls out. How can we fight this? Do we need a physical approach or a biological approach?"

An oral program supplemented with a hair care program would do both, targeting graying from both the inside and out.

A top focus of the beauty company's since it was founded over 100 years ago, L'Oreal spends over £581 million pounds last year on research -- about twice as much as its competitors.
Gray Hair Cure Available in 10 Years, Says L'Oreal originally appeared on StyleList on Mon, 26 Oct 2009 13:45:00 EST. Did you know that 83% of consumers make a mistake the first time they pick a box color?

That's what world-renowned celebrity colorist Kelly Van Gogh has set out to change. "There's no reason on this earth to have 52 shades of brown," she tells StyleList. "It's redundant and confusing."

And at the salon, you'll get the perfect hue, but who has the time (and money) it takes for touch ups every few weeks?

Van Gogh heard these frustrations from her clients -- and she didn't have a solution. "Color needs maintenance but I couldn't get to my clients every three weeks. They were asking for help, but there wasn't an at-home box color I could recommend," she told StyleList.

So she invented her own: Kelly Van Gogh Root Rehab at-home color system and Heads Up at-home highlighting system take the guesswork out of at-home color maintenance, starting with simplifying the color choice process.
Continue reading Kelly Van Gogh Root Rehab - DIY Hair Color Made Easy

Kelly Van Gogh Root Rehab - DIY Hair Color Made Easy originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 16:00:00 EST.
Another day, another blonde celebrity.

This fall, brunettes have been biting the dust like mad, trading their darker locks for a "funner," lighter hue.

But Refinery 29 brings up a great point: If Kim Kardashian's hair counts as blonde, is Raquel Zimmerman's considered radioactive white? And what about Taylor Momsen, Ashley Tisdale, and LiLo? (if you can see past her alleged plastic surgery, that is)

The edgy style site has created a handy Blonde-O-Sphere graphic to help us figure it all out. It chronicles the different types of blondes - from avant-blondes, to secret blondes-in-hiding (suicidal blondes?) to a whole new category of blonde, called "bronde." (that would be you Alexa Chung!).

Check out the Blonde-O-Sphere, and tell us how you prefer your blonde.
Blonde-o-Sphere: How-To Classify Celebrity Blondes originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 13:55:00 EST.
Lady Gaga's Hair Color. If you envy (naturally brunette) Lady Gaga's platinum hair, listen up. Stylist Nicole Gache of NYCs Valery Joseph Salon is the brains behind the high-impact look, and it's not an easy one to achieve. "We worked on her hair for three days straight, coloring it gradually with a lot of conditioning treatments," says Gache. So if you're thinking of the same look, "It's important to see a good colorist," Gache cautions. "Gradual treatments with heavy conditioning is key."

Heather Graham's Hair Housecalls. If you were wondering how celebrities find time to stay coiffed, here's one secret: house calls. NYC stylist Adrian De Berardinis of the De Berardinis Salon recently paid a visit to Graham at her NYC pad for a trim. Berardinis told us he used a cool new blow-drier called the Cricket Q-ZONE, which has a special silent motor that won't drown out client-stylist chit chat.

Mary-Louise Parker's Blowouts. When stars like Mary-Louise Parker and Rosanna Arquette just want a quick blowout, they head to Blow, the New York Blow Dry Bar. The space, dedicated to the art of the blow-dry (though they offer other services, too) is a favorite of anyone looking for a no-frills, smooth-every-time style. New product offerings, like the specially designed shower cap, help seal out humidity and keep your blowout in-tact through a shower--a plus for us non-celebs looking to make our investment last a few days.

Style Censorship Alert! Japan announced today that it's cracking down on the style antics of its competitive swimmers.

Swimmers may face lifetime bans from the sport if they decorate their fingernails or wear bright polish, dye their hair, or wear earrings. This may be a tough bill to face in a culture that's all about self expression - and revered for its creative nail art.

The ruling, according to Reuters, is to prevent swimmers from showing up for competitions looking more rockstar chic than diver geek.

"The United States and Australia are also setting these criteria," the Japan Swimming Federation's executive director Masafumi Izumi told local media Wednesday, after the stringent new plan had been been written into its charter. Swimmers will have to sign a letter of oath stating they'll abide by these new rules.

Fashion forward rule-breakers face being booted off the team and sent home in disgrace, a suspension of up to five years or even a lifetime ban.

This is the latest in a recent string of beauty bans - Tajikistan just banned beards for teachers under 50.

Japan to Swimmers: No Nail Polish, Hair Dye or Earrings originally appeared on StyleList on Wed, 21 Oct 2009 13:27:00 EST.
This just in: Blondes really do have more fun.

That is, if your idea of a good time is standing in front of a mirror and putting on makeup (woo hoo!).

A new survey conducted by Goody hair care revealed that blondes spend six more minutes per day than brunettes getting ready -- totaling 22 days of the year, compared to 19 for dark-haired gals, as reported by The Telegraph.

(22 days?!? What have I done with my life?)

According to the survey, blondes reportedly devote 72 minutes per day on their beauty regimen, while brunettes take 66 minutes.

Continue reading OMG! As the brand ambassador for OMEGA, Nicole Kidman paid a visit to the NYC boutique yesterday to spread a little good karma.

She donated a signed Constellation timepiece to OMEGA's Ambassador Collection Series of autographed watches, but that wasn't the biggest news.

The A-list actress also signed the cases of 30 additional Constellation timepieces, with proceeds from the sales going to UNIFEM (the United Nations Development Fund for Women), Kidman's charity of choice.

And, then there's the hair.

Kidman, who had gone blonde for a lengthy stretch, returned to her roots as a redhead. We almost forgot how striking the color looks against her creamy, pale skin and bright blue eyes.

A big, huge, definite do. Now if only Lohan would follow...

StyleList fans have spoken - and Jessica Alba listened.

The star, who went from blonde to red on September 28th, quickly dyed her locks back to a more natural-looking shade of dark brown three days later.

It must have been because StyleList readers hated the new shade.

In our poll, 86% of over 25,000 voters preferred Alba in dark locks, while only 11% and 3% liked the red and blonde looks, respectively.

We wonder why the quick change: was the hair color switcharoo for a role, or did Alba just dislike her carrot top as much as you did?

And what's next - Black locks? When Jessica Alba went blond, we had our doubts.

Rihanna is constantly evolving her hair style, keeping us beauty watchers on our toes.

But when the Barbadian beauty hit New York Fashion Week on September 10th with a touch of blonde highlights, we had no idea that the streaking would continue, sprinting its way into a full-fledged hair trend. You see, Rihanna was spotted on the New York streets this past Tuesday with a punchier, stripy 'do, rife with thin honeyed highlights that channeled the rebellious 80s.

We spoke with Ursula Stephen, the singer's hair stylist, who told us "Rihanna and I felt that it was time to play around with some color," she said. "We used extensions to create this look."

About 24 hours later, songstress Chrisette Michele and rapper Eve attended the VH1 Hip Hop Honors with similar looks.

Coincidence? Or a full fledged trend? We'll go with the latter.

If you're a fan, take a cue from Stephen and update your strands by adding a few blonde pieces. You can always remove them if the look doesn't work for you!
'80s Blonde Streaks - Rihanna Reignites a Classic Hair Trend originally appeared on StyleList on Sat, 26 Sep 2009 09:00:00 EST.
Victoria's Secret spokesmodel Miranda Kerr revealed her newly lightened locks at last night's launch party for The Dream Angels Heavenly Enchanted Collection at The Grove in Los Angeles.

Kerr's hair color falls smack into the category of "blonded-brunette," one of my new favorite terms, recently coined by the gals over at DailyMakeover.com (thanks ladies!)

While Kerr looks absolutely gorgeous in her new locks (I mean, how could she not?), being a brunette myself I'm always a tad miffed when stars trade their dark locks for blonder pastures (see more offenders here). I've got nothing against light hair, but when you're already famous it just seems so...Hollywood.

But I digress. Back to the beauty news.

Victoria's Secret's new Heavenly Enchanted juice is a richer, more sensual version of their existing Heavenly fragrance. An Oriental-woody with top notes of sparkling raspberry and bergamot, a middle of peach nectar and jasmine, and a dry down of coconut milk and amber, the fragrance comes in a EDP, a sheer fragrance mist and a body cream. It's a limited edition, and is available in stores and online starting today.

Get Professional Color at Home
With so many women forgoing salon visits to color their hair at home, Fekkai probably figured--hey, if I can't beat 'em, why not join 'em?

His Salon Color system is a line of permanent home hair color complete with a professional bowl and brush, protein pre-treatment, and conditioning post-treatment. If you've been visiting the salon to go red, or to dye your natural color something darker, this kit can achieve the same results at home--and you won't have to tip anyone!

Visit the Salon Less Often
If you'd like to have more time between salon visits, it's all about minimizing those roots. "Ask your colorist to weave highlights through hair in layers, which makes them less obvious," says Sharon Dorram-Krause, Color Director for Nexxus and the Sally Hershberger Salon in NYC.

To go 2 months (or more) between appointments, "Make sure you only go 2-3 shades darker/lighter."

Touch Up Roots
This Emergency Retouch Kit, available at Space NK starting September, is available in 9 shades of premium hair color. The formula infuses keratin protein, amino acids, and caviar essential oils to help keep hair conditioned.

Refresh Dull Color
A clear gloss is the secret to shiny, just-from-the-salon hair. Most colorists use them to seal in color and close the cuticle after color treatments, especially highlights. You can do the same at home with a product like this one from Frederic Fekkai.

Tip: Use it 2-3 weeks after salon (or home) color to keep it looking fresh and make it last longer.

Keep Color Bold
Many experts believe sulfates (lathering agents) in shampoo are the culprit of fading color. But Sharon Dorram-Krause, Nexxus Color Director, blames water: "Water is the main cause of color fade, even more than sun exposure, chlorine and harsh shampoos," says Dorram-Krause.

Her salon stocks Nexxus Dualiste products, which were developped to block water from entering the hair shaft--a main cause of color fade in their tests.
This paraben, sulfate, and silicone-free line of haircare products debuted this summer at Kiehl's. Not only do these product not contain any color-stripping ingrediants, but Sunflower Seed Oil contains a natural UV-protective filter to protect hair from the sun, too.

Quick Fix for Roots
Think of this product like mascara for your hair. Keep it in your bag for those moments when roots suddenly appear, and simply brush on using the unique pen formula to cleverly conceal them. Available in colors from Beige Blonde to Jet Black, it'll dry onto hair as a quick fix and then rinse away when you shampoo.

Go Demi-Permanent
To avoid getting stuck with a new color when experimenting at home, a demi permanent is a great way for a brunette to go red or a blonde to go darker without any salon commitment. "Since it washes out in about 24 washes, the client has the flexibility to try new looks frequently," says Danny Lapointe, Artistic Director for Clairol Professional. Try that with a permanent color, and you'll be left with roots that only a colorist can usually correct.

Get Rid of Gray
Clairol's new Advanced Gray Solution, developed for use on African American Hair, promises to cover grays without damage: "The dye molecules react with oxygen in the air instead of a developer," says Tippi Shorter, celebrity colorist for Clairol. "Because the typical developer is not involved there is no peroxide or ammonia and the color is gentle enough to use even after a relaxer." The color lasts up to 12 shampoos.
If you're the kind of girl who likes to stand out, "go vibrant warm red," suggests Knights.

Nexxus Salon Hair Care

Color Without the Commitment
Permanent hair color is so...permanent. To try a bolder shade without as much commitment and damage, ask your colorist to use a demi-permanent color.

These dyes can add vibrant, bright tones to your hair without stripping it or permanently changing the color. Because they're ammonia-free and fade out gradually after about 24 shampoos, they're a great way to experiment.

Courtesy of Wella

Red Color Forecast
"This fall and winter, redheads will be more sophisticated and playful with deep red tones and a few cool, blonde highlights throughout to enhance the red even more," says Tracey Cunningham, Redken Creative Consultant for Color, who has worked on Lohan.

Michael Buckner, Getty Images

Keeping Your Color Bright
"Since red is the most difficult shade to keep bright, adjusting the water temperature to tepid in the shower can be very helpful as well as using gentle shampoos made specifically for color treated hair," says Eva Scrivo (shown here), Wella Spokesperson and Owner of the Eva Scrivo Salon.

Courtesy of Eva Scrivo Salon

Brunette Color Forecast
"Girls who have highlighted their hair for years are embracing their natural hair color, giving the hair a well needed break from highlights," says Scrivo.

"Going back to a beautiful light brown with just some highlights around the face allows women to get their hair back in shape and grow it longer than they could when they were regularly bleaching it."

Tip: "This must be done in a two step process by using a filler as a first layer on the hair, and the second layer is the desired shade of brown," explains Scrivo.

Courtesy of Wella

Cool Tones Rule
The big color trend this fall is cool tones. Ash browns, plum reds, sparkling blondes: "Think Fergie's shade; her lighter highlights really show through her dark, chestnut base making her haircolor look so flawless and effortless," says Tracey Cunningham.

Jon Kopaloff, FilmMagic

Blonde Color Forecast
"I think that the most natural looking blondes, no matter how light they are, want multi-dimensional color," says Scrivo.

"Colorists are strategically placing brighter pieces with hand painting techniques like balayage to not only create more impact of the all over color, but put less stress on the hair. We are more and more allowing our natural hair color to come through and be more a part of the over all result."

Courtesy of Wella

Go with a Gloss
Whether you're changing your color this fall or sticking with what nature gave you, a gloss is the perfect compliment to any hair color. "Clear glazes do a beautiful job of smoothing down the surface of the hair as well as adding shine, just like a top coat for nailpolish," says Scrivo.

If you're gray, a gloss is especially beneficial: "When the hair looses pigment, it can become wiry and course, a very different texture from the way the hair used to feel," explains Scrivo. A gloss (like Wella Touch of Gloss, an in-salon product favored by Scrivo) will seal down the cuticle to make hair smoother and shinier.

There's nothing like a great dye job to turn back the clock. Hair color not only covers gray but also boosts volume and shine, makes fine lines less noticeable, and brightens a dull complexion. That is, unless you're still coloring the same way you did in your 30s. "What worked then might be aging you now," says celeb colorist Kim Vo of the Mirage Las Vegas. To the rescue: 3 rules for do-it-yourself dyeing that can make you look and feel a decade younger (no salon required!).

RULE NO 1: Choose an Age-Defying Shade
Extremely light or dark hair looks harsh against mature skin. For the most youthful effect, lighten hair two shades from your current natural color (for instance, from medium brown to light brown or dark blonde). "Going lighter softens your face, so fine lines and age spots are less noticeable," says Gary Howse, creative director of Seattle's Gary Manuel Salon. Besides being flattering, it also minimizes mistakes and avoids noticeable roots.

RULE NO. 2: Go Multi-tonal
The vibrancy of youthful hair comes from the subtle contrast of color--a mix of highlights and lowlights against your base color. "Nothing is more aging and looks more unnatural than hair that's flat and all one color," says Brad Johns, Clairol's global color director. Next are two tips to re-create this radiant effect:

Gregg DeGuire, WireImage.com

Tip 1: Use a multi-tonal dye
A tip-off that a dye delivers multi-dimensional color: The product name contains words such as shimmering, blended, or tone-on-tone. To hide a smattering of silver, choose a demi-permanent dye; if you're more than 40% gray, opt for a permanent color.

Tip 2: Add highlights
Face-framing highlights make eyes look brighter and give skin a healthy glow. Perfect your technique by "sketching" your pattern beforehand with conditioner, which has a similar consistency to hair color. Face-framing highlights make eyes look brighter and give skin a healthy glow. Compensate for skin sallowness by using a warm shade--look for words such as golden, honey, or amber in the product's name. Stick with hues that are closer to your hair color; for example, brunettes use light brown, not blonde, and redheads use copper.

RULE No. 3: Apply Like a Pro
For foolproof home coloring that delivers salon-worthy results, try these next three tips:

Getty Images

Tip 1: Concentrate on roots
When we're younger, our hair is naturally lightest at the ends. To re-create this effect, apply dye to your roots, but not your ends (as some kits instruct)--they soak up color the fastest because they're so porous. During the last 3 minutes of processing, splash water onto the crown of your head and then comb color through from top to bottom. "That shot of water dilutes the dye, creating a more natural-looking hue," says James Corbett, owner of James Corbett Studio in New York City. Rinse hair until water runs clear. Then apply the kit's conditioning treatment, and rinse well. Wait at least 24 hours before shampooing.

Tip 2: Employ heat
Because heat opens hair's cuticle, warming an old towel in the dryer and wrapping it around your head after applying the dye allows the formula to soak into gray's more stubborn hair shaft.

Tip 3: Try a gloss
There's now a host of at-home glosses (once only available at salons), including tinted formulas that help intensify a fading shade. "They contain silicones that coat and smooth the cuticle, allowing light to reflect evenly," says Vo. Use monthly to maintain shine and vibrancy.
