Katherine Heigl channeled "Gone With the Wind's" Vivien Leigh in dark, luxurious hair extensions at the 2010 ShoWest Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 18, 2010.

The young actress amplified her alluring, dark hair color with hair extensions full of layers which she wore in loose, spirals to accept the ShoWest award for Female Star of the Year. Dressed in a cherry red Donna Karan dress, she accentuated her look with shimmering eyeshadow, lush lashes, and flesh-toned lipcolor.

Heigl recently left behind her signature golden locks, and joined the dark side with this rich, chocolate hue -- adding a peachy, warmth to her milky complexion.

Yearning for a new spring hair 'do?

Whether it's a sleek, shoulder-length bob or a custom-blend of blonde highlights or thick, wavy locks (thanks to a few easy-to-apply extensions), spring hair is bold, carefree, shiny, and most importantly, healthy.

To get full scoop on the hair styles, cuts and color we should be considering, we tapped into the tress-pertise of backstage fixture Tippi Shorter for the most wearable runway looks, Tinseltown favorite Mark Townsend for what's do'-in' in young Hollywood, and celebrity hair colorist Eva Scrivo, for the hair color trends that made waves on the runways and in her New York salon.

HAIR COLOR TRENDS
Balayage and Root Shading: On the Fall 2010 runways of Pamela Rolland, Altuzarra, Milly by Michelle Smith, and Lela Rose, we noticed a resurgence in balayage (in French meaning, "to sweep") and root shading. But this spring, we'll be seeing locks full of root depth, says celebrity hair colorist Eva Scrivo. "A current hair trend is in the application of color -- skipping the foils and using hand-painting techniques -- in order to get these rich, organic, and almost lived-in results," says Scrivo. "In the world of artificial color, hair is lighter at the root area and more even throughout. So, it can become a bit wiglike." But with sunnier days ahead, it's time to get back to nature with hair color that is much more realistic like the models at DKNY's Fall 2010 fashion show (pictured, above). Scrivo kept the roots dark and added subtle highlights around the face and onto the ends to create a bold, yet soft contrast.

Extensions: Already a way of life for models, actors, and entertainers, hair extensions are becoming more commonplace among everyday women. "Whether you're experimenting with fun color and you don't want to damage your hair or have the commitment of color, clip-in extensions are a great alternative," says Scrivo. At Cynthia Rowley's Fall 2010 fashion show (pictured, above), the stylist colored human hair extensions in various jewel tones to perfect vibrant ponytails. Scrivo recommends Platinum Seamless for women who want to add highlights to their hair without the added stress.

Ammonia-Free Hair Color: As the seasons change, professional hair colorists are evolving with the trends and playing around with no-ammonia permanent and demi-permanent hair color. "We're definitely working differently as colorists...more delicately and more mindfully," says Scrivo. Experimenting with different formulations of dye allows for more innovative ways to blend and perfect hair color. "Past decades are always a source of inspiration, but its how we bring it into the present that makes a colorist stand out." With ammonia-free hair color lines from brands like Wella, Alfaparf and L'Oreal, you won't have to risk damaging your strands in order to achieve great coverage.

CELEBRITY HAIR TRENDS

Healthy Hair: Great hair is healthy hair. And to ready his A-list clients' strands this season, celebrity hairstylist Mark Townsend started by cutting off split ends and using a good conditioning treatment. "The biggest trend for spring is full, shiny, healthy hair," says Townsend. "I've been stocking my clients up with products to get their hair in perfect condition including MoroccanOil Shampoo, Kiehl's Sunflower Color Preserving Shampoo, MoroccanOil Conditioner and Restorative Hair Mask, Kiehl's Conditioner and Grooming Aid Formula 133, and MoroccanOil Treatment." The full curls Townsend did on Zoe Saldana for the 62nd Annual Director Guild Awards stood out because of the intense shine and body.

Short Hair: Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal's blunt, chin length bob is Townsend's idea of the perfect haircut for spring. Leaving it slightly longer in the front with no layers, he created a fresh and modern look. If you have thick locks like Gyllenhaal, Townsend advises applying Sally Hershberger's Supreme Head Style Primer for Normal to Thick Hair and blow drying with a round brush before running your fingers through for slightly, tousled effect.

Ponytails: With tons of inspiration on the spring runways, Townsend admits that he's definitely creating the ponytail on his clients. Whether its for a movie premiere, luncheon, or awards ceremony, this simple, yet classic hairstyle can add the finishing touches to any ensemble.

RUNWAY HAIR TRENDS
Bohemian Ballerina: This classic hairstyle may have a youthful aesthetic, but the secret to its grownup appeal is in its effortlessness. "It's more of a loose, casual topknot," says Tippi Shorter, celebrity hairstylist and Avon global stylist adviser. "A very beautiful look that is great for both day and night." With disheveled, ballerina buns popping up at the Spring 2010 runway shows of Bottega Veneta, Lanvin, Ann Taylor, and Chado Ralph Rucci, this 'do is a must -- and an easy one at that -- for spring.

Shorter suggests prepping wet hair from root to tip with Advance Techniques Volumizing Mousse to enhance natural shine and create volume. Gather hair into a bun (being careful not to disturb the wispy, flyaway hairs), secure with bobby pins, and finish with Advance Techniques Hair Spray.

Wavy Volume: "When everyone wanted to wear their hair super, sleek for winter, I couldn't wait for spring to arrive so I could be rebellious with waves," says Shorter. And loose, wavy strands full of texture are definitely making a comeback. To mimic the luxurious waves models donned at Rachel Roy's Spring 2010 show, try setting hair with Advance Techniques Pillow Curlers and lightly misting with Advance Techniques Hair Spray. Run fingers through to loosen curls for a soft finish.

Accessorize With a Part: A simple styling trick for women who are in the process of growing out their bangs or want to amp up a fringe cut, Shorter suggests making a statement with a clear, defined part. To recreate the sophisticated, side bun seen at Dennis Basso's Spring 2010 runway show, prep ends with Advance Techniques Dry Ends Serum and follow with Advance Techniques Super Straight Smoothing Balm from root to tip. Blow-dry straight, gather into a low bun, and finish with Advance Techniques Mirror Shine Spray. After being cut from American Idol back in Season 8, 24-year-old Lacey Brown is back this year with a new look to accompany her new edgy, punk rock shtick.

Singing the Rolling Stone's hit "Ruby Tuesday" last night was fitting for the Texas girl with the bright red hair. Or was it magenta? Either way, it stood out far more than her performance which the judges said was "sleepy" and "50/50".

Regardless of her reviews, Brown's funky, edgy cut combined with the bold color may have inspired the inner punk rocker in many of us. But take warning fellow punks, this look is not for the faint of heart -- or hair.

Referred to as "fashion red" by stylists, Brown's color is part of a series of vibrant dyes, like blue, violet or bright red, that are not naturally occurring colors. They may not be found in nature, but shades of soft pink, hot pink and red-pink have been spotted in Hollywood with celebrities like like Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera, Lily Allen, Pink and Duffy sporting these hues in the past. It's a strong, bold and playful color choice for people who want to express their inner rebel or rock vibe.

While drugstore brands of these electric shades are available, the result can often lead to a bad hair month until it washes out -- or several months if it's a permanent dye. Better to leave this one to the professionals. Experienced stylists know how to apply beautiful fashion colors densely and evenly. Not that it will look natural, but at least you won't end up with the wrong shade or splotches of color in the wrong place.

If an all-over fashion color is too bold, you can always try extensions or highlights in one of these shades. They will still add a hint of punk while being easy to take out or change before that big job interview!

"In Scotland, there is no such thing as bad weather - only the wrong clothes," quips Scot-born comedien Billy Connolly.

But a report from the UK Telegraph says that not only does Scotland get the brunt of bad weather - but it may be responsible for the vibrant red hair shade the world associates with the Scottish and Irish.

Based on the university papers of 26 year-old PhD genetics student Emily Pritchard from the MRC Human Genetics Unit at the Western General Hospital, Pritchard's thesis is based on the evolution of man from Africa. People with a genetic strain for red hair had fair skin that couldn't handle the hot temperatures and intense sun exposure of the continent without suffering burned and cancerous consequences - which prevented them from surviving.

While humans are thought to have evolved from Africa between one and two million years ago, red hair only emerged as a more common trait some 20,000 years ago - which is after redheads made it to cooler and wetter European climates. The red-headed gene pool who experienced the more temperate summers and longer, colder winters of Scotland were better able to survive and successfully reproduce in the environment.

Pritchard tells the UK Times that her paper is based on "speculation rather than scientific study, but it's plausible."

The scientific studies may not exist yet, but the red-headed prevalence among Scottish and Irish people is inarguable; eight percent of the population has red hair, while the rest of Europe only sees one percent of natural red in the mix.

Meanwhile, red hair is such a trademark of celebrity models like Maggie Rizer, that changing a hair color can pitch the fashion world into a frenzy.

Let's face it: highlights are expensive. At any given salon, you can spend upwards of $100-200 dollars for a head-full. It's no wonder, then, so many women are hitting the box (of highlights, that is) and doing it themselves at home.

A few strategically placed highlights can work wonders. They can make you look younger and more radiant (it's amazing what a little sun-kissed color can do). Plus, notes celebrity stylist and Hair Basics expert, Ted Gibson, they create dimension, and make the hair look and feel more full. "The hair shaft expands when it's highlighted, creating the appearance of thicker hair," he says.

Thankfully, gone are the days of frantic phone calls to the 800-number on the back of the box (help, my blonde hair turned orange and feels like straw!). New and improved at-home formulas are now available and offer healthy, natural-looking results.

The most essential step in home highlighting is picking the right shade. "If you have darker hair, you want to choose a more neutral color. If you have medium-toned hair, you can go a little lighter, maybe even golden or sun-kissed," says Gibson.

The rule of thumb when selecting a shade: one to two shades lighter than your natural base color is always a safe bet.

Placement of the highlight is equally as important. "When you're highlighting, always think about what feature you want to bring out and highlight it," says Gibson. "If you have bangs, highlight them so that you bring emphasis to your eyes. If you have a little bit longer bang, or a side sweep, make sure to highlight in the front so it can bring out the cheek bone," he adds.



When applying the formula, start a quarter-inch away from the scalp using thin, fine strokes (chunky highlights can look unnatural.) Apply conservatively, too. Overdoing it is a dead giveaway you colored your hair, whereas a few strategically placed highlights will make it look more natural.

Post-processing (most take about 15 minutes), shampoo, condition and style. If you think the color is not light enough, give it time. Highlights evolve with every washing, which means they'll get lighter and lighter over time.

"This is the most solution-oriented product I've ever worked with," says Backe. "You touch it to the root, and your gray is gone right away - but your hair still has the shine and depth of a real hair color. And what I like best is that it doesn't interfere with my work as a professional colorist. You can shampoo it right off."

And Backe has also prepped famous faces with the marker for red carpet appearances - although he can't share names.

"Anytime I work on roots or extensions - publicists never let me name names! But it works great for busy women because their schedules are all over the place, and spending four hours in a salon is sometimes impossible. The quick touch up gives them the confidence they need to feel pretty. Otherwise, you just worry about who's looking at your roots all night long!" says Backe.

While most of the talk leading up to fashion week has been about young bloggers and unwelcome celebs, there's one editrix who can bring things back around to more important matters, like one model's hair color.

Anna Wintour apparently made it clear that she is not a fan of Maggie Rizer's pale-on-pale look. The model -- who shot to fame with dyed red locks -- has since gone back to sporting her natural blonde strands.

"Anna said, 'I'd like to see Maggie as a redhead,"" a source told the New York Post.

And what Wintour wants, Wintour gets.

Apparently, New York native Rizer, who currently fronts the Dooney & Bourke campaign, headed to the salon today for a dye job.

"Blond is her natural color, and she really doesn't want to go back to being a redhead. But she felt enormous pressure to do it," the source added.

As for Anna, her power over the industry extends far beyond beauty. Wintour spearheaded the Fashion's Night Out initiative and the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund with an iron resolve.

But perhaps red locks are the way to Anna's heart? No doubt we'll be seeing her at New York Fashion Week wth flame-haired Vogue Creative Director, Grace Coddington.

Everything about Lady Gaga screams innovation and creativity, from her song lyrics to those outrageous outfits, not to mention some unquestionable talent (her recent Grammy show performance pretty much took over the night).

Then, there's the hair.

Somehow her most striking looks -- giant hair bows and neon yellow, two-tone streaks, just for starters -- wouldn't be the same if Gaga stuck to the natural brown she had in her pre-superstar days.

That shocking platinum comes courtesy of Aura Friedman, Senior Hair Colorist and Educator at the Bumble & bumble salons in New York City. StyleList caught up with Friedman recently to get an insiders glimpse into the Lady Gaga universe.

"We have to do a double process to make Gaga's hair the right shade, which means removing her natural color with cream bleach and then applying a high-gloss dye that actually contains pearly pink, sparkling tones," says Aura. It might seem a little odd, but those pearly pink tones she uses for Lady Gaga's platinum also help boost shine and gloss for anyone with highlights.

Hair as blonde as Gaga's takes lots of maintenance. "We have to do it every three weeks, which is extremely damaging," says Aura. So that Gaga's hair doesn't turn into a fried mess from the repeated stress it endures, she uses Bumble & bumble's Bb Wear and Care Mending products on her tresses.

Aura's advice works in the real world, too. She suggests the Bb. Wear and Care Mending line (coming in March 2010) for anyone with colored hair, since they "maintain shine and luster in between all color services."

And when it comes to DIY, Aura is emphatically against it -- especially if you're veering far from your natural color a la Gaga. "My thought on home color is don't do it! I've spent many hours trying to fix the mess it can create," she says.

With fifteen years of dyeing experience, we'll take her word for it on the bleach jobs. But we're all for using an ammonia-free glaze to cover up our grays.

Going Gray has never looked this glamorous.

As we've been reporting here at StyleList, the once-shunned shade is downright chic these days, thanks to a slew of young women who are adding touches of gray to their tresses by choice.

First, it was 19-year-old British It girl Pixie Geldof, who was spotted out-and-about in London this winter rocking a bold gray crop. Then it was Daphne Guinness, who opened and closed the Spring 2010 Giles Deacon fashion show, where matte gray strands ran rampant.

The domino effect continued at Gareth Pugh's Spring 2010 show, where "premature" hair matched tonal gray clothes. At Thakoon's spring showcase, hair stylist Eva Scrivo intermixed strips of pale platinum and rich pewter for an unexpected twist.

And last week, Chanel Couture breathed new life into the trend, sending models marching down the runway looking anything but dowdy in shiny silver-streaked wigs-all while 13-year-old blogging sensation Tavi Gevinson looked on in a newly-dyed blue-gray 'do.

Frederic Fekkai master stylist Didier Malige -- who gave three models at Proenza Schouler's spring fashion show grayish blue, green and purple strands -- called the new silvery hues "fun and unique" and pointed to French model Marie Seznec, who at 26, was prematurely gray and served as the muse for Christian Lacroix in the 1980s.

Speaking of muses, one of the latest converts is none other than Kate Moss. The 36-year old actress debuted "graylights" in her blond bob-worn messy and slightly separated-at the Longchamp party last week at The Ritz in Paris.

And while Moss was spotted the next day at the Balmain boutique in Paris sans gray strands, Scrivo says gray is definitely having a moment: "Women aren't afraid of gray hair anymore. A couple of chunks of gray here or there makes a real statement," she says. "It's reminiscent of the 1920's when platinum blonde was very popular, like white almost, which is so close to that gray, pre-war glamour color."

And while we are all about bright young things in their 20s working this trend, we can't help but wonder if it's not ridiculous for those of us slowly creeping towards middle age -- and without the fashion cache of Kate Moss -- to rock these stone-colored styles.

"If you look at Kate, she can pull off anything -- it's messy and it blends in and you can't tell if its highlights or something else," says celebrity stylist Oscar Blandi. "But it's silly for middle aged people to try and replicate this. If you're in your 40s or even late 30s, I don't think you want to have streaked gray hair for your blind date."

With women now spending a reported $1.3 billion per year on hair color (that was just for 2009 according to Nielsen data), the irony of deliberately dying our hair the one color that so many of us desperately try to cover up, isn't lost on us.

But the author of the book 'Going Gray,' Anne Kreamer, who at the age of 49 let her hair grow out to show her natural gray, tells StyleList that gray's new cult status is a positive thing: "I think it's fantastic. It opens up the opportunity for women of all ages to say, 'hey, if young women are embracing this, so can I,' and the less an issue hair color can be, the better." Kreamer, who created a profile on match.com to research her book, says more men wanted to go out with her gray hair than without.

So for those of you with the guts to try and rock some gray locks, StyleList consulted the experts for a few full proof tips.

The safest way to tackle the trend? Extensions. Forget a full head of gray. Scrivo suggests ordering gray clip-on pieces, available online from salons like hers. "Your stylist can then clip them in and customize it to your haircut." Scrivo says these dimensional pieces add interest to highlighted hair, "as long as they're translucent, subtle and not too bright."

Women with olive complexions, beware: Gray can make you look more drab. Scrivo says skin with green or yellow undertones might be best holding off on this one. "Women with pink and red undertones can handle more ashen tones because gray helps neutralize."

And lastly, gray streaks are best when they don't hit your face directly. Scrivo recommends gray strands on areas like the overlay of bangs

Some of us like our ride to be two-tone. Others, prefer their hair.

Lady Gaga and Pink hit the red carpet at tonight's Grammy Awards with ombre locks. Pink's platinum to silver fade out was subtle, while Gaga's lemon to acid yellow transition was decidedly not.

We think their tresses are an Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test version of the beachy, balayage look that's currently everyone's favorite.

Pink visited the Grey Gardens on the Grammy red carpet, channeling a trend that's gracing the most fabulous heads this season.

Just last week Kate Moss wore gray highlights to the launch of her handbag line with Longchamp, and Chanel showed gray streaks at their Spring 2010 Couture runway show.

Pink's platinum blonde locks looked like they were tipped off with silver, echoing the gradation of gray on her gown, which ranged from silver at the bodice to charcoal at the ankles.

Moss, however, only wore the look for one evening. We wonder if Pink's silver tips will have a longer shelf life?

This isn't the first time the strand-tastic singer has dyed her hair gray -- Pink sported true-gray locks way back in September 2008. Was she the original gray lady?

Hair color mixing has always been hidden in the back of the salon because of the goop and stink, but Gibson's New York salon will feature the first INOA atelier in the U.S., where clients can watch as their color is scooped and blended.

Better technology does come with a price; the INOA hair color line will cost an average of 20% more than its traditional counterparts. But L'Oréal Professionnel's General Manager Alejandro Lopez is predicting big things for the line.

"This is the iPhone of the hair color industry."

Fortunately for Lopez, his sleek black suit wins more fashion points than the mom jeans Steve Jobs sported at the iPad launch!

Here at StyleList we've been following the strange mini-trend of young women going gray on purpose.

Now Kate Moss has gone to the gray side! Moss was spotted last night at the Longchamp party (to launch her signature collection Kate Moss for Longchamp) with silver streaks running through her blonde hair (Elle UK confirms the trendy graylights), chopped and blown into a messy-glam long bob.

The look was in line with the silver streaks at Chanel Couture Spring 2010 earlier this week.

Giles Deacon and Gareth Pugh both showed matte gray hair for their Spring 2010 shows, and girl-about-London Pixie Geldof has worn the look for a few months now.

Also at the Paris Couture shows, 13 year old blogger Tavi is making a statement in the front rows with her newly blue-gray hair, which she's chronicaled on her blog, The New Girl in Town, and is in line with the grayed-out watercolor tones we saw on the spring runway at Proenza Schouler and on Ashley Olsen in December.

Now, we're all for children and 20-somethings running with this trend, and love its originality. But we're wondering if it's appropriate for Moss, who recently celebrated her 36th birthday? If you already have a natural few grays, are you too old to wear this style?
