Talk about Hollywood glamour.

Katherine Heigl channeled "Gone With the Wind's" Vivien Leigh in dark, luxurious hair extensions at the 2010 ShoWest Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 18, 2010.

The young actress amplified her alluring, dark hair color with hair extensions full of layers which she wore in loose, spirals to accept the ShoWest award for Female Star of the Year. Dressed in a cherry red Donna Karan dress, she accentuated her look with shimmering eyeshadow, lush lashes, and flesh-toned lipcolor.

Heigl recently left behind her signature golden locks, and joined the dark side with this rich, chocolate hue -- adding a peachy, warmth to her milky complexion.

What do you think about Heigl's new look? Do you prefer the former "Grey Anatomy" star as a blonde or brunette? Short or long? Leave a comment below!
HAIR COLOR TRENDS
Balayage and Root Shading: On the Fall 2010 runways of Pamela Rolland, Altuzarra, Milly by Michelle Smith, and Lela Rose, we noticed a resurgence in balayage (in French meaning, "to sweep") and root shading. But this spring, we'll be seeing locks full of root depth, says celebrity hair colorist Eva Scrivo. "A current hair trend is in the application of color -- skipping the foils and using hand-painting techniques -- in order to get these rich, organic, and almost lived-in results," says Scrivo. "In the world of artificial color, hair is lighter at the root area and more even throughout. So, it can become a bit wiglike." But with sunnier days ahead, it's time to get back to nature with hair color that is much more realistic like the models at DKNY's Fall 2010 fashion show (pictured, above). Scrivo kept the roots dark and added subtle highlights around the face and onto the ends to create a bold, yet soft contrast.

Extensions: Already a way of life for models, actors, and entertainers, hair extensions are becoming more commonplace among everyday women. "Whether you're experimenting with fun color and you don't want to damage your hair or have the commitment of color, clip-in extensions are a great alternative," says Scrivo. At Cynthia Rowley's Fall 2010 fashion show (pictured, above), the stylist colored human hair extensions in various jewel tones to perfect vibrant ponytails. Scrivo recommends Platinum Seamless for women who want to add highlights to their hair without the added stress.

Ammonia-Free Hair Color: As the seasons change, professional hair colorists are evolving with the trends and playing around with no-ammonia permanent and demi-permanent hair color. "We're definitely working differently as colorists...more delicately and more mindfully," says Scrivo. Experimenting with different formulations of dye allows for more innovative ways to blend and perfect hair color. "Past decades are always a source of inspiration, but its how we bring it into the present that makes a colorist stand out." With ammonia-free hair color lines from brands like Wella, Alfaparf and L'Oreal, you won't have to risk damaging your strands in order to achieve great coverage.

CELEBRITY HAIR TRENDS

Healthy Hair: Great hair is healthy hair. And to ready his A-list clients' strands this season, celebrity hairstylist Mark Townsend started by cutting off split ends and using a good conditioning treatment. "The biggest trend for spring is full, shiny, healthy hair," says Townsend. "I've been stocking my clients up with products to get their hair in perfect condition including MoroccanOil Shampoo, Kiehl's Sunflower Color Preserving Shampoo, MoroccanOil Conditioner and Restorative Hair Mask, Kiehl's Conditioner and Grooming Aid Formula 133, and MoroccanOil Treatment." The full curls Townsend did on Zoe Saldana for the 62nd Annual Director Guild Awards stood out because of the intense shine and body.

Short Hair: Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal's blunt, chin length bob is Townsend's idea of the perfect haircut for spring. Leaving it slightly longer in the front with no layers, he created a fresh and modern look. If you have thick locks like Gyllenhaal, Townsend advises applying Sally Hershberger's Supreme Head Style Primer for Normal to Thick Hair and blow drying with a round brush before running your fingers through for slightly, tousled effect.

Ponytails: With tons of inspiration on the spring runways, Townsend admits that he's definitely creating the ponytail on his clients. Whether its for a movie premiere, luncheon, or awards ceremony, this simple, yet classic hairstyle can add the finishing touches to any ensemble.
RUNWAY HAIR TRENDS
Bohemian Ballerina: This classic hairstyle may have a youthful aesthetic, but the secret to its grownup appeal is in its effortlessness. "It's more of a loose, casual topknot," says Tippi Shorter, celebrity hairstylist and Avon global stylist adviser. "A very beautiful look that is great for both day and night." With disheveled, ballerina buns popping up at the Spring 2010 runway shows of Bottega Veneta, Lanvin, Ann Taylor, and Chado Ralph Rucci, this 'do is a must -- and an easy one at that -- for spring.

Shorter suggests prepping wet hair from root to tip with Advance Techniques Volumizing Mousse to enhance natural shine and create volume. Gather hair into a bun (being careful not to disturb the wispy, flyaway hairs), secure with bobby pins, and finish with Advance Techniques Hair Spray.

Wavy Volume: "When everyone wanted to wear their hair super, sleek for winter, I couldn't wait for spring to arrive so I could be rebellious with waves," says Shorter. And loose, wavy strands full of texture are definitely making a comeback. To mimic the luxurious waves models donned at Rachel Roy's Spring 2010 show, try setting hair with Advance Techniques Pillow Curlers and lightly misting with Advance Techniques Hair Spray. Run fingers through to loosen curls for a soft finish.

Accessorize With a Part: A simple styling trick for women who are in the process of growing out their bangs or want to amp up a fringe cut, Shorter suggests making a statement with a clear, defined part. To recreate the sophisticated, side bun seen at Dennis Basso's Spring 2010 runway show, prep ends with Advance Techniques Dry Ends Serum and follow with Advance Techniques Super Straight Smoothing Balm from root to tip. Blow-dry straight, gather into a low bun, and finish with Advance Techniques Mirror Shine Spray. Accentuate your spring hairdo with these wearable beauty trends straight from the Spring 2010 runways.
Spring Hair Trends: Pros Breakdown Best Runway, Celebrity & Color Do's originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 19 Mar 2010 08:30:00 EST. For many women, frizz is an inevitable part of their days -- good hair, and bad.

But it was even worse 20 years ago, before John Frieda pioneered the frizz-control market with the introduction of Frizz-Ease Hair Serum in 1990. Now, two decades later, the company is introducing Frizz-Ease Smooth Hydrating and Repairing Shampoos and Conditioners, to do to wet hair what the serum does to dry hair, and ensure that smooth hair starts in the shower.

Formulated with an exclusive Frizz-Mending Complex containing silk protein and lipids, these duos replenish essential oils and proteins while restoring your hair with moisture to prevent frizz and protect against humidity.

"It's about realizing its that time to fight the battle!" said Harry Josh, John Frieda International Creative Consultant. "A lot of people don't realize that you can't think that coming out of the shower and taking your hair down out of the towel that's it's time to start styling."

Josh urges women to understand that the process begins as soon as you suds up.

"These shampoos and conditioners fill in the cuticles to create shine and add body to the hair," he said. "Because we have two different shampoos and conditioners, you really want to focus on whether your issue is reparative, which is if you're hair is fried and frizzy, or hydration, if you're hair is dry and frizzy, and prescribe accordingly."

Josh also recommends using Smooth Start shampoos and conditioners prior to and on the day of a big event to achieve a hairstyle that lasts as he did with Amanda Seyfried at this year's Oscars. Finished with the Root Awakening Strength Restoring Gel, Seyfried's sleek chignon stood out on the red carpet.

Frizz-Ease Smooth Start Shampoos and Conditioners by John Frieda ($6.49 each) are now available at food, drug and mass retailers.
You already know about the heart-healthy benefits of eating superfoods like blueberries, salmon, tomatoes and broccoli, right?

But did you know there is an equally powerful set of foods for healthy hair? That's right, a diet rich in key vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids can unlock your naturally gorgeous, shiny locks.

The folks at The Frisky recently revealed a list of the top 12 must-have hair foods. Not only will these items go a long way towards good hair days, they may also help your waistline!

1. Salmon for omega-3 fatty acids, protein, vitamin B-12, and iron
2. Dark green vegetables for vitamins A and C
3. Beans for zinc, biotin and iron
4. Nuts for selenium, zinc, omega-3 fatty acid, and alpha-linolenic acid
5. Poultry for protein
6. Eggs for protein
7. Whole grains
8. Oysters for zinc
9. Low-fat dairy products for calcium and protein
10. Carrots for vitamin A
11. Beef for protein, zinc, iron, and vitamins
12. Brown short-grain rice for vitamin B and fiber

Want other ways to get naturally shiny hair?

Try a clarifying shampoo once a week. It can rid your hair of build-up from all of the styling products you use.

Keeping your tresses smooth and frizz-free will also help them look shiner. Opt for a good shine serum and apply evenly before blow drying.

Finally, avoid over-processing your hair. Yes, we girls have a right to change our minds when it comes to color or highlights, but overdoing it will only lead to dull, unhealthy looking hair. Instead, try to stretch the time between chemical treatments -- this will not only help your hair, but your wallet too!

Have you ever ripped out a celeb's pic from a magazine and brought it to your stylist in excited anticipation for that cut, only to end up looking nothing like it?

Ulta has plans to change that.

We recently stepped into an airy and sunlit loft in NYC's trendy Meatpacking District as a tall Cameron Diaz-like model vogued in a hot pink backless mini dress. The occasion? An exclusive sneak peak at Ulta's photo shoot for their Spring/Summer 2010 hair cut campaign, inspired by sexy and modern celebrity hair cuts.

Starting at May in Ulta stores nationwide, you'll be able to choose from one of three celeb-inspired haircuts, which will be comprised of soft and edgier takes on Charlize Theron's, Rhianna's and Hilary Swank's looks.

So how do you choose which famous mane would work best for you?

"Identify what makes you feel good, and go for that kind of cut. I'm not forcing fashion on women here. It's all about being inspired by a style, and then customizing it so that it works for your look and lifestyle," says Celebrity Stylist Rodney Cutler, who is designing the collection of styles.

Between now and May, Ulta is intensively training stylists on the cuts, which is about a nine week process - and includes lots of hands-on training. The goal is to make sure every Ulta in the country consistently cuts the same looks, yet are able to adapt to different kinds of client face shapes and requests.

"Modern inspirational trends are the core of Ulta, but we want to create wearable versions for our clients that make them feel absolutely beautiful in them," says Tracy Guthrie, Manager of Ulta's Salon Technical Training.

"We're also going to have a new glazing technique to enhance the cuts, which leaves hair so smooth and shiny. There are no chemicals, ammonia or peroxide in the glaze, which is why hair looks so much healthier afterwards," adds Guthrie.

Despite the high-end looks and extensive stylist training, Ulta manages to keep affordable pricing; as an example, the super popular Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy by Coppola that often tops $375+ dollars in other salons is currently being offered at a special price of $185 across the country. The hair straightening treatment is Peter Coppola's formaldehyde-free version, which lasts about 3 months and cuts up to 95% of frizz from hair.

Cuts typically start in the $30's and color in the $50's. A Saturday hot date night shampoo and blowout will cost you about $35.

And a great added convenience - every Ulta in the country is open 7 days a week.

Clearly, they know that women like options.

Speaking of options, check out all the fun things you can do with thick hair.
Exclusive Sneak Peek at Ulta's Spring & Summer Celeb-Inspired Hair Campaign originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 18 Mar 2010 12:00:00 EST.

After being cut from American Idol back in Season 8, 24-year-old Lacey Brown is back this year with a new look to accompany her new edgy, punk rock shtick.

Singing the Rolling Stone's hit "Ruby Tuesday" last night was fitting for the Texas girl with the bright red hair. Or was it magenta? Either way, it stood out far more than her performance which the judges said was "sleepy" and "50/50".

Regardless of her reviews, Brown's funky, edgy cut combined with the bold color may have inspired the inner punk rocker in many of us. But take warning fellow punks, this look is not for the faint of heart -- or hair.

Referred to as "fashion red" by stylists, Brown's color is part of a series of vibrant dyes, like blue, violet or bright red, that are not naturally occurring colors. They may not be found in nature, but shades of soft pink, hot pink and red-pink have been spotted in Hollywood with celebrities like like Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera, Lily Allen, Pink and Duffy sporting these hues in the past. It's a strong, bold and playful color choice for people who want to express their inner rebel or rock vibe.

While drugstore brands of these electric shades are available, the result can often lead to a bad hair month until it washes out -- or several months if it's a permanent dye. Better to leave this one to the professionals. Experienced stylists know how to apply beautiful fashion colors densely and evenly. Not that it will look natural, but at least you won't end up with the wrong shade or splotches of color in the wrong place.

If an all-over fashion color is too bold, you can always try extensions or highlights in one of these shades. They will still add a hint of punk while being easy to take out or change before that big job interview!

Grammy-winning singer Estelle definitely keeps us guessing when it comes to her hair.

Whether her tresses are in a sleek pixie or a smooth chignon, the English "American Boy" songstress's strands are ever evolving.

Taking a break from promoting her latest single, "Freak," Estelle talked to StyleList about bringing her flavor to season 3 of "Shear Genius," crossing continents to get her hair styled, and surviving a haircut gone bad -- real bad.

StyleList: How was your experience as a guest judge on "Shear Genius"?
Estelle: I had no idea what to expect, but I wanted to be myself and be honest. Growing up I did hair by force of having little brothers and sisters. I think every black girl has done hair. I'm very specific about what I want and like. I wanted to see the contestants take the looks somewhere completely different. And it was very entertaining [laughs].

SL: How does your hair reflect your personal style?
Estelle: It's very eclectic. It's whatever it is at any given moment. I like it simple because my hair is very thick, and when it gets wet it tends to go very wavy versus real tight. I keep it as straight as possible by not putting in a lot of products like gel.

SL: You've recently worn the bowl cut. Why that look?
Estelle: That was a wig [laughs]! I just like the hairstyle. It's a good alternative when you're having a bad hair day.

SL: You're from England. How long did it take to find a hairstylist in the United States you felt comfortable with?
Estelle: About a year. I was coming back and forth for a while. I had one lady who did my hair exactly the way I liked it, but she lived too far away. I found someone closer based on a recommendation, and I've been going there ever since.

SL: Are there any hair products from England that you still use today?
Estelle: Well, it's kind of all over. Paul Mitchell's Foaming Pomade -- it's the greatest! It just holds it down. When my hair has a frizz moment, I put some of that in and it sits real quietly.
SL: Any past hair experiences that have stuck with you?
Estelle: When I was about 17 and had just started cutting my hair, I let this lady do my hair. Imagine that bowl cut I had, but I didn't want that haircut and it came out crazy dry. It looked like all of the oils were sucked out. It just looked terrible! I had to be nice and polite and just leave. I went home and put powder and grease onto my head to slick it down and hoped for the best.

SL: Who are some of your beauty and fashion icons?
Estelle: Audrey Hepburn, Diana Ross and The Supremes... that whole era. When I first came out, I had the white eyes. And people were like, "Oh, you're dark skinned. Why are you wearing white eyes?" It was because I loved it, and I could do anything I wanted! It's different and just gorgeous.

SL: What beauty products are always in your handbag?
Estelle: Lip gloss, face powder, and ChapStick.

SL: Is there anything you feel naked without?
Estelle: Lashes! I love good lashes. Mine are pretty long as they are, but I put on the falsies and I'm like, 'Wow!'
Got lots of hair?

Consider yourself lucky.

Thick, full hair is much to be desired. In fact, says celebrity stylist and Hair Basics expert, Ted Gibson, "It's the kind of hair that most girls want."

One of the best things about having a head-full, notes Gibson, is that you don't have to get it cut every four to six weeks. You can also use a lot of styling product without weighing the hair down and you don't have to shampoo daily (oily hair is hardly a concern).

Most women know if they have thick hair, but the true measure is the diameter of each strand. "If your hair strands are on the larger side, you have thick hair," says Gibson.

Another way to determine: pull your hair back with an average size elastic. If it will only wrap one or two times, your hair is most definitely thick.

When it comes to cutting thick hair, long layers work best, as do longer styles. "If you cut thick hair short, it tends to stick out," says Gibson.

And because most women with thick hair often skip out on a few shampoos, washing with one that's highly cleansing is recommended. "You want a shampoo that is going to thoroughly remove build-up from the scalp, as well as the hair," says Gibson.

Thick hair can handle almost any styling product, but the ones that work best are products spiked with silicone. They have a little more weight, which helps keep thick hair tame.

One of the easiest styles to achieve with thick hair is coveted, beachy waves. Because the hair is full and voluminous, the curl holds beautifully.

Hair Basics: Thick Hair How-Tos

Thick hair has many perks. For starters, you can get away with cutting it less often. But even better is that you can shampoo less (oily hair is hardly an issue) and apply almost any styling product without feeling weighed down or falling flat. But the biggest bonus (to us, at least): you can create sexy, beachy waves in a matter of minutes. Read on for the step by step on how to achieve them.

Hair Basics: Thick Hair How-Tos

The key to creating loose, sexy waves is the size of the curling iron. A large barrel-approximately 1 ½ to 2 inches around-will give thick hair the perfect wave.

Hair Basics: Thick Hair How-Tos

When curling the hair, work in large sections (about 1 to 1 ½ inches wide). Placement of the curling iron is key to creating great waves. "Hold the iron horizontal and wrap the hair around the iron, leaving the ends out," says Gibson.

Tip: To ensure the curl stays put, spray each section with hairspray before curling. The hairspray creates a grip for the iron, resulting in a better, longer lasting curl.

Hair Basics: Thick Hair How-Tos

After the entire head is curled, "warm a nickel-size amount of shine lotion in the palm of your hands," says Gibson. Then, tilt your head back and work the product through the hair from roots to ends.

Hair Basics: Thick Hair How-Tos

Using your hands, pull the curls forward, and separate and style to your liking. The more tousled and messy the hair, the better.

Tip: You'll get better results using your hands to style. A brush will literally brush out the waves.

Hair Basics: Thick Hair How-Tos

Strolling the streets of Los Angeles in black leggings, a white tee and a sweatshirt, Hannah had no idea what was coming: Mission Makeover.

Gorgeous from the get-go with a cool, casual style, our team wanted to give the Cleveland native more of an edge. Translation: go from comfortable casual to wearable glam slam.

Makeup artist and hair stylist Roberta Inez started the transformation by smoothing on a tinted moisturizer to even Hannah's complexion. Offering sheer coverage with a touch of color, tinted moisturizers are perfect for day because they almost always include an SPF.

Next, Inez gave Hannah a soft, smoky eye that can be worn during the day without looking too overdone. She started with an eye shadow primer, which helps to even the skin tone on the lids so the shadow looks richer. It also helps the color adhere to the lids longer (read: your shadow won't do a disappearing act come noon).

On the lids, Inez applied a soft gold eye shadow to the inner corners (she also swept it along the brow bone) and a rich green to the outer corners, smudging the color to appear softer. Both the upper and lower lash lines were rimmed with a rich brown shadow. To create a liquid effect, Inez lightly dipper her liner brush into water, dragged it across the brown shadow and applied. After curling the lashes, a few coats of black mascara finished the eyes.

Hannah gets a soft, smoky eye and a layered haircut. Photo: Kristin Burns

Lips and cheeks should be subtle when wearing a smoky eye -- be it soft like Hannah's or daringly bold. Inez dusted a shimmering bronzer across Hannah's cheekbones to warm her complexion, and then slicked her lips with a sheer, barely-there lip gloss.

Hannah after her Mission Makeover transformation. Photo: Kristin Burns

Inez took Hannah's hair from flat to fabulous by adding layers. By cutting a few strategic layers, she created natural volume around the crown. After blowdrying the hair straight and flat ironing a few on the under pieces, Inez set three sections of the hair-both sides and the back-in large Velcro rollers.

She sprayed them with hairspray and left them in for 10 minutes. When she removed the rollers, Hannah's hair was full of soft, moveable volume. To finish the look, she used a medium-barrel curling iron to curl Hannah's long, sweeping bangs and flip the ends.

To fit her new look, stylist Jordan Feldman picked the perfect little black dress and paired it with an ankle boot. The belted waist emphasized her petite frame, while the scooped neckline revealed just enough. Feldman accessorized with three necklaces of varying length and nothing more. When accessorizing, stick with the minimum.

If you opt for big earrings, skip the necklace and add only a few stacked bangles (if at all). Ellen DeGeneres is over 50, but you'd never know it by her youthful, spirited style, including her short, spiky hair.

"This cut works well on Ellen because of her hair texture," Craig Gangi a former stylist on the Ellen DeGeneres Show who's now at the Argyle Salon and Spa in Los Angeles.

"She wants to stay hip, and she's always looking to change it up and keep it modern."

A hair cut that's short on top with lots of layers creates a very textured look for this comedian and Covergirl spokesperson.

But the key to this face-flattering style is adding razored edges and highlights around the face to keep it soft, says Gangi. Product-wise, a little pomade creates the messiness of DeGeneres' signature style.

"Ellen can pull this look off. She looks good in short hair," stated Gangi. "It's just who she is."

What other 50-plus-year-old women top this stylist's great hair list?

Michelle Pfeiffer, Madonna, Kim Basinger and Oprah (her shorter 'do now, not the longer locks she was sporting last season). And let's not forget the queen of short and sassy, Jamie Lee Curtis!

When it comes to a short hair cut, Gangi believes that matching your hair to your personality is what ultimately determines who can wear it. "It's all about your personal style," he said.

"You couldn't put this on Julia Roberts because that's not who she is." Some women feel short, spiky hair takes away from their femininity, but, according to Gangi, if you're confident and add enough highlights to keep it soft, you can wear it, regardless of your age.

What do you think? Who are your over 50 Hollywood hair faves?
We've heard of runway roadkill, but this is getting ridiculous. Young Scottish milliner James Faulkner has designed a collection of hats featuring the feathers or fur from dead animals (crows, rabbits, foxes, etc.) picked off the roadways. Midway through my first visit to Reyad Fritas at Frederic Fekkai, I peered into the mirror to admire my head full of Saran-wrapped highlights. When we both remarked that we'd probably just discovered Lady Gaga's next look, I knew Fritas would be a down to earth guy I could trust with my hair. Plus, the fact that he'd been recommended to me by multiple industry insiders didn't hurt.

We segued naturally into critiquing Hollywood hair we liked and disliked -- a big part of both of our jobs. I learned that Reyad was jetting to L.A. after my appointment to "touch up Heidi's hair," (that's Klum, to you) and regularly attends star-packed parties with famous pals like Graydon Carter. I was definitely relaxed to know that major celebs trust their locks to Fritas, but it wasn't until I saw the end results of his handiwork that I truly knew I was in good hands.

Now, I haven't always been in such good hands. In fact, I've had my hair broken off by bleach, burned off by a blow-dryer, and many more mishaps than I care to remember. How is it, I asked, that stars like Gwen Stefani and Lady Gaga can change their hair so often, bleach it within an inch of its life, and still have strands left to work with? Fritas responded by giving me some great advice (and a fabulous new hair color) and I officially formed a checklist in my head of signs of a great colorist. If you don't have access to some of NYC's best experts like Fritas, here's how to tell if you've found a keeper:

5 signs of a great colorist:

1. He/she lets your hair's health inform all color decisions.
I had spent a year growing out my bleached-out, burnt-out hair, and thought I was ready to go back to blonde. Fritas nixed the idea, examining my hair closely and noticing that I still had some areas with breakage that wouldn't tolerate the bleach. Your colorist should never agree to anything without assessing your hair's current state, and factoring in how it will appear post-treatment.

2. He/she actually uses the products he recommends.
A salon will always recommend its own product line, but asking the stylists which products they use on their own hair is a great way to suss out the true winners. Stylist Lindsay Block loves the Fekkai Ageless All Day Hair Plump, which plumps up damaged cuticles with moisture, leading to thicker, healthier hair over time. The shampoo girls love the Fekkai Ageless Crème Luxe Hair Treatment, which improves the condition of weak, damaged strands. And Fritas likes the Fekkai Technician Color Care Mask to reactivate your shade and keep it fresh between appointments.

3. He/she gives you low-maintenance highlights.
If you don't want to come in for frequent touch-ups, your colorist should create a look that fits your lifestyle. Luckily for me, Fritas is an expert at Balayage, a technique of hand-painting individual highlights instead of wrapping multiple pieces at a time in foil. The results are more woven-in and natural-looking, which means less obvious roots and more time between touch-ups. If you can find someone with a natural knack for the technique (this is half the battle) ask your stylist to focus the brightest color on the ends of your hair, gradually darkening toward the roots. The effect is very Gisele-like, and is a great way to brighten up your hair without worrying about roots.

4. He/she provides tips for color care.
The shampoo girls confirmed what I've been suspecting for years: Don't wash your hair for at least 2-3 days after a color appointment to let the dye really grab onto the hair. Since color fades slighting every time you wet your hair, this gives your color a fighting chance to lock on.

5. He/she doesn't give you a carbon copy of a celebrity's hair.
Aside from the fact that a celebrity's color or style may not look the same on you, there's another big reason not to request a carbon copy: Celebrities wear wigs. Chances are, when you see a star with long, flowy waves or a crazy, artistically sculpted style, a wig (or at least a hair piece) is at work.
5 Signs of a Great Hair Colorist originally appeared on StyleList on Mon, 15 Mar 2010 17:30:00 EST.
Do you have ponytail envy? Do you eye women with long, thick hair who look great with it pulled back into an effortless-styled ponytail? They even make wearing it with a hat look fabulous!

And for women that are struggling to get their short, frayed ends secured into an elastic band only to have it fall out moments later, you may be thinking that there has to be a better way.

Well there is, if you ask the folks at Kohl's. The department store has introduced the ponytail baseball cap -- a shiny, spiraled blond synthetic ponytail attached to a denim cap.

Could this be the look we always wanted? Um, no.

For starters, the chances of it matching your natural hair color are almost zero. Secondly, what do you do when your hat flies off on a windy day? "Excuse me, have you seen my hat -- and my ponytail?"
Beauty Apps

Photoshop.com Mobile, Free
This new Adobe Photoshop app is supercool and best of all, free. But what it makes such a fabulous beauty tool is its powerful ability to retouch, edit and share your images with just a swipe of your finger. You can crop, rotate or adjust a photo's color by swiping your finger across the screen. And filters, like Soft Focus or Sketch can help you make yourself even prettier for that Facebook pic you've been wanting to post. Other effects include Vibrant, Pop, Vignette Blur, Rainbow, White Glow and Soft Black and White. And of course, you can access your entire online photo library or take an image while you're in the app. Up to 2GB of photos can be uploaded and stored online.

All you have to do it is take a picture with your iPhone next time you're at the salon (don't forget the back) and save it with any pertinent information.
AcneApp, $0.99
This app may need a huge leap of faith. But for less than a dollar, what do you have to lose? According to the FDA, narrow-band, high-intensity blue-light therapy is approved for treating acne. In most treatments, blue-light therapy is also combined with pulses of other heat and light to target the causes of acne. AcneApp, which boasts being developed by a dermatologist (yet also warns that it for "entertainment purposes only"), has you hold your iPhone or iPod Touch next to your face and will provide blue, red or both light treatments for two minutes a day on acne prone areas. Successful? We can't say, but it certainly is nifty.

With over 100 tips and tricks culled from the beauty professionals at Cosmo, Glamour, Vogue, Aveda, Mac and more, this app is a must. It may be simple, you'll just get a quick tip written in white lettering on a black background, but it's nice to know somebody is there to let us know that sugar stiffens collagen fibers, leading to wrinkles. No more twinkies at lunch!

This app is not only useful, but it's sure to invoke gaggles of giggles. After you take a photo of yourself in the app or upload an image from your library, you'll choose from all kinds of hairstyles, accessories and even make-up tints to style yourself like your favorite celebrity. Dying to try out Vanessa Hudgens hair and a kickin' pair of Oliver People's shades? This is your chance. There are downloadable style packs for more choices, a makeover gallery where you can browse and rate the looks, and built-in tools that let you zoom and crop your photo.
Instant Prettifiers: Seasons Best Backstage Tips

Easter egg colors are your friend
We're loving this cheery remix of the smoky eye. Just swap your charcoal shadow for the grown-up pastels makeup artist Dick Page used on models at Michael Kors. He lined their eyes with black pencil, then added gold shimmer in the inner corners. Next, he applied light blue or purple shadow along the lower curve of the eyes and from the lash line to just above the crease, then smudged, smudged, smudged. He finished with black mascara.

Instant Prettifiers: Seasons Best Backstage Tips

Wearable pastels Shiseido Makeup Luminizing Satin Eye Color in Bone, Fondant and Provence ($25 each, available at Macys.com)

An allover skin soother

Dashing from show to show and getting makeup done and redone can leave a model's skin dull and sensitive. The cure: an ultrarich moisturizing balm. Makeup artist Sarah Lucero used one to prep models' faces behind the scenes at the Lela Rose show. The bonus? "It creates dewiness before you apply makeup," she told me. Smooth it on and let it sink in. "You can also use it on the lips," Lucero said.

Instant Prettifiers: Seasons Best Backstage Tips

A one-minute way to glow?
Darphin Aromatic Renewing Balm ($70, available at Darphin.com) For a cheaper moisturizer alternative that's easy to track down, check your medicine cabinet-a bit of petroleum jelly works too.

Instant Prettifiers: Seasons Best Backstage Tips

Orange is the new red (lipstick!)

We saw this again and again backstage and learned the trick to pulling it off: Just pick one spot to play up. Makeup pro Lucia Pica chose the cheeks at the Erin Fetherston show. She rubbed creamy orange blush onto the models' cheekbones with her fingers-a nice, bright contrast to their smoky brown eyeshadow.

Instant Prettifiers: Seasons Best Backstage Tips

A lipstick to love

At Rebecca Taylor, makeup artist Rie Omoto used MAC Lipstick in Lady Danger ($14, available at Maccosmetics.com) on the models' lips. Apply it with a lip brush for more control.

Instant Prettifiers: Seasons Best Backstage Tips

A cure for tarantula lashes

In between primping models at BCBG, vice president of MAC makeup artistry Gordon Espinet taught me his secret for keeping lashes defined and clump-free: Apply mascara with a fan brush, above. Just rub it over your mascara wand, then brush it onto your lashes-the stiff bristles are great for separating. How genius is that?

Instant Prettifiers: Seasons Best Backstage Tips

Try a textured mani

Think of your nails as a showpiece accessory (they're jewelry, but cheaper), and apply a polish with sparkle-like chunky glitter or gold flecks-built in. "It's all about texture," manicurist Elle told me at the Reem Acra show. Another way to wear the trend: Try a dark, opaque shade, with a sheer, shimmery layer on top.

Instant Prettifiers: Seasons Best Backstage Tips

For blingy nails

Try, from left: Tracy Reese for Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Hidden Treasure and Midnight in New York ($7 each, at drugstores), and Shades by Barielle in Falling Star ($8, barielle.com). One more tip? Finish with a topcoat-glitter polishes are
chip-prone.

Instant Prettifiers: Seasons Best Backstage Tips

Do an unboring decorated bun

Classic chignons are a runway staple, but the best ones this year got dressed up with fabric. At the Tibi show, hairstylists Kevin Ryan and Frank Rizzieri confessed that they used leftover fabric to frame the models' updos. And at Jason Wu, hair pro Odile Gilbert used sheer black cloth to add drama to the models' hair. "It's fresh and spontaneous," she said. To DIY, twist your hair into a bun, wrap fabric around it and make big loops with the material, pinning them into place as you go.

They may not be breaking out the mixing bowl for this hairstyle, but hip, young celebs and models are bringing back the '70s with the bowl cut.

Stars like Agyness Deyn, Estelle, Parker Posey and Christina Ricci are sporting this retro hairdo. And while it may conjure up painful childhood images for many ("Mom, who's the boy in that picture?"), you can breathe a sigh of relief that today's bowl cut is much more flattering and feminine.

A cross between a modern-day bob and the heavy bangs of last season, today's bowl style is edgier with tons of layers and texture, according to celebrity hairstylist Anh Co Tran of the Neil George Salon in Los Angeles. "This can be such a harsh cut, so it has to be very soft with a lot of movement."

While Tran said his salon has seen a rise in pixies with bangs, the bowl cut is definitely becoming popular. "I'm working to break a couple of my clients into it," he said.

But even if you didn't have one growing up, this hair trend still may not be the best look for you, according to Tran. "You have to be very confident to wear it because it frames and exposes your face. It works well for oval, square or long faces and those with smaller features," he said. "People with a large nose or a round face should stay away."

When styling a bowl cut, use a round brush, but not too much on the ends, advises Tran. Instead, he suggests using a flat iron to add slight bend or waves for variety.

Whatever you do, Tran urges that you do not attempt to cut this style yourself. "Your stylist needs to create the look by cutting into the hair and razoring it" -- two things that make this bowl cut ultra-modern.

What do you think of the bowl cut? Does it bring back too many bad hair memories?

Not to be outdone by the Italian fashion industry, leading Parisian designers unveiled très magnifique collections bolstered by breathtaking sets (à la Karl Lagerfeld's iceberg runway at Chanel). And makeup artists and hairstylists worked their magic to pretty up the statuesque models who donned the designs in noteworthy looks.

From bodacious buns to theatrical makeup to intensely teased strands to modern takes on classic 'dos, the runways of Paris Fashion Week were filled with head-turning beauty.

Read on for the details on four gorgeous (and a few outrageous) trends from over the week in Paris.
Big, Bold Buns: We are definitely fans of a chic chignon -- but the beauty teams at Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, and Nina Ricci maximized the 'do for the catwalk and paired it with standout makeup including smoky eyes, blonde brows and bright red lips, and strong eyebrows that framed golden lids. To achieve volume at the crown, lead hairstylist Guido Palau for Redken at Nina Ricci, boosted strands with Aerate 08 Bodifying Cream-Mousse and set with Forceful 23 Finishing Spray.
Sideshow Glamour: Let's face it -- there are beauty trends that aren't made for day-to-day wear. But that doesn't take away from the tremendous detail that produces astonishing hair and makeup masterpieces. From the over-the-top pinned curls and "tanned" complexions at John Galliano to the Bantu knots and pale skin at Comme des Garçons to the messy, kohl-rimmed eyes and red pouts at Vivienne Westwood -- Paris Fashion Week served up extreme beauty.
Such a Tease: Heavily, textured hair is a major trend on the fall runways, so it was no surprise when we saw models donning teased tresses at Christian Dior and Comme des Garçons. While the hairstylists at Dior went for a more perfected look accentuated with fishtail braids and berry stained lips, the models at Comme des Garçons wore pastel-colored puffs that reminded us of cotton candy.
Ladylike Perfection: 'Dos like the flip, ponytail and slickback will never go out of style, and the beauty teams at Chloé, Louis Vuitton, and Balenicaga perfected these retro styles. To create a classic ponytail that complemented the 1950s inspired collection at Louis Vuitton, hair stylist Guido Palau for Redken, curled the ends and concealed the elastic holder by wrapping it with a piece of hair. Glass 01 Smoothing Serum was the key to a sleek finish. Celebrity makeup artist Pat McGrath took the look at Balenciaga up a notch by painting a few models brows a bright, pastel color. To recreate this clean, yet fresh face use CoverGirl Clean Liquid Makeup and Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Lush Berry and Plush Peach.

As shocking as it may seem, bald can be beautiful. And that has never been more true after The Frisky spotted one such model who recently kicked off Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2010 in Mumbai. Not only did she rock the runway, she rocked it bald!

We all remember Demi Moore revealing her shaved head as Lt. Jordan O'Neil in "G.I. Jane." She wowed us with her seriously buff bod, but it was her bald head that really had people turning theirs. Natalie Portman also went all-out for her role in "V for Vendetta" when her head was shaved on screen -- luckily, they got it right the first time!

While many women have proven that being bald is hot, others have not (ahem, "Britney"?). Some say the pop star shaving her own head was a reaction to the stress of raising two kids and a failed marriage; others believe it was a publicity stunt. Either way, we can probably all agree it was a definite hair don't.

So what makes some women able to pull this look off?

It's all in the shape of your face, says Moulay Yacoubi of the Pierre Michel Salon in New York. "You would need to have an oval or heart shaped face," he said. "It helps to have clear skin and strong symmetrical features, too, since the face will be the focal point."

Moulay warns that going bald is not for everyone, so don't break out the razor just yet. "This look is extreme, so it requires someone with a lot of moxie and a rocker edge. It's definitely not for the faint of heart and most people would look much better and more stylish with a short haircut that flatters their face rather than a totally bald look."

He adds, "For women who are losing hair due to chemotherapy, shaving the head can be a bold, beautiful statement. For most people, though, I'd strongly advise against it. I always advise my clients to settle on a classic, flattering hairstyle rather than a momentary trend because beautiful hair never goes out of style."

Still want to try the bald look? Don't attempt to cut it yourself.

Moulay says its best to place the task in the hands of a professional who can assess whether this is the right choice for you. For most people though, he says a pixie cut is a much better option!
