But there's more to making the most of the day than shopping prep. The right outfit can stop tempers and temperatures from boiling over amid the frenzy. After all, if you feel frazzled, fat and frumpy while browsing for gifts, it's unlikely inspiration will strike. And if you need to personally roadtest whether that cute top will fit your sister (or even take a break to treat yourself), it's crucial to be ready. So we tapped fashion and beauty guru Mary-Alice Stephenson, a top celebrity stylist whom even Oprah trusts, and "Today Show" regular Jill Martin, author of "Fashion for Dummies" to provide some stress-proof styling tips for braving the big day.

What to Wear on Black Friday

PART 1: UNDERWEAR
First of all, when it comes to lingerie, stay simple. "I don't care what you're wearing, you need Spanx as undergarments. I'm not a fan of any tummy. You should always wear those when you're shopping," Martin chides.
Stephenson agrees. "Stick a pair of Spanx in your bag, which will hold you in if you're trying on that LBD." She says coverage is as crucial as clean lines, and recommends microfiber tanks, thongs and boy shorts from Hanro.
"Sometimes, you don't always get a dressing room on Black Friday," she continues. "In my shopping experience, it's a day when women have no shame. If you need to get naked in front of the world, at least you'll look good."

Courtesy of Spanx

PART 2: PANTS

Stephenson says when it comes to legs, stay skin-tight. For the brave or the buff, she'd suggest leggings.

"But I love my Loft skinny denim which has got spandex in it which sculpts the body. This season, everyone is buying boots and it makes it easy to try them on - you don't have all that fabric from a boot cut. You never need to take a pair of socks. And you can even pop a dress or tunic over - it's not bulky denim."

LOFT Modern Skinny Jeans, $59.50, available at LOFT stores and LOFTonline.com.

Courtesy of Ann Taylor

PART 3: SHOES

"There are so many embellished flats nowadays, at all price points," says Stephenson. "It looks festive and is easy for you to slip in and out of."

Heels are fine too but keep them low and kittenish: Cole Haan with its Nike technology, BCBGeneration and Jessica Simpson's collection.

Stephenson is also fond of Converse sneakers, a classic that's been revived yet again. She's increasingly spotting customized pairs, with sequins or brooches like a sporty version of that embellished flat.

"Just avoid shoes that take a lot of time to take off, and stay away from Uggs and clogs - I understand why women love them, but they're ugly," she says.

Jamie Koslow, AOL

PART 4: JEWELRY

Keep jewelry to a minimum. Chunky cocktail rings will snag on sweaters as you browse, and chokers catch on necklines of anything you try on. If you're loathe to nix sparkle entirely, keep it to outerwear: Stephenson loves the embellished sweater coats from Vera Wang's line for Kohls.

Rachel Been for AOL

PART 5: HAIR AND MAKE UP

The same rule's true for hair and make up as jewelry. Think fresh faced and simple, more Taylor Swift than Dolly Parton.

"You don't want to leave your face over every single garment you try on," says Stephenson. Pop hair in a pony tail and stick with nothing more than lip gloss.

Taylor Swift makes a shopping run in NYC.

INF

PART 6: OUTERWEAR

The key when you're running in and out of stores, or from the mall to the car, is to plan for extremes of hot and cold: opt for layered outerwear, like a cashmere cardigan.

"Vests are fantastic, too and we're having this huge sleeveless moment," raves Stephenson. "And layering a coat with a vest means you don't have the bulkiness."

Actress Kristen Bell steps out in a multi-layered outfit while readying for some retail therapy.

INF

PART 7: BAGS

"You have to stay as hands free as possible," Martin says, before confiding her own practical strategy. "I wear a pack around my waist that's black and I bought for $5. In it, I have a credit card and $100 cash in a rubber band, my shopping list, my Blackberry and some lip balm. That's it."

Stephenson agrees that practical purses for Black Friday should be hands-free. "Like messenger bags. And this season is all about the rectangular shape in bags, shoulder bags like hobos. And even very ladylike bags with two handles have a shoulder strap nowadays."

She'd splurge on the roomy quilted Marc Jacobs Stam bag, named after supermodel Jessica.

At left, Rihanna sports a Louis Vuitton fanny pack while out and about in London.

INF

PART 8: MORE BAGS

The fanny pack-equipped Martin has a canny tip when it comes to shopping bags that she calls creative planning.

"Go first to a store that has a great big shopping bag, like Intermix which has a giant shopping bag, because it sells boots," she says. "Then I go there and buy a necklace or a shirt, then ask 'Can I have a big shopping bag, I have a lot of stuff to get today?'"

That way, you can simply stuff future purchases into a single carry-all.

Mary-Kate Olsen teeters in Balenciaga heels with a shopping bag half her size.

PacificCoastNews.com

PART 9: THE MANTRA

Both Stephenson and Martin agree there's one overarching rule for Black Friday wardrobes: don't be tempted to dress down.

"You should look like you'd want to look if you were to run into an ex-boyfriend from high school," Martin says.

She speaks from experience. Martin once broke her own commandments and popped to the mall wearing sweatpants.

"My ex-boyfriend was there with his new girlfriend. I wanted to shoot myself. Everyone's shopping on that day."
My last style challenge from Bluefly and Stylelist is Plan B's blue tye dyed stretch leggings. I wanted to create a modern and edgy look, so I paired the skinny leggings with a flowy, nude tunic. The tunic has ruffled hemlines which I thought added a touch of feminism to my entire ensemble.

For a bit of masculine appeal, I wore a dark navy tailored blazer that was equipped with the season's biggest trend, bold shoulders! I completed this look with cascading gold chains and black suede peep toes pumps.

Thank you Bluefly and Stylelist for letting me have this wonderful opportunity to showcase my style in "America's Most Stylish Blogger Contest"!!
After evaluating a rack of clothes that could potentially be paired with this unique Plan B legging; I decided to resurrect my famous Little Black Dress. In August, I wore this LBD for 31 days in what I called The Little Black Dress Experiment and documented the experience on my blog. My goal was to illustrate to my readers how they could take a simple piece in their wardrobe and accessorize it to create innumerable looks. In this week's look I wanted to reaffirm that you truly can pair your little black dress with.anything.

Inspired by the legging's crushed-leather-meets-tie-dye look, I paired the outfit with a navy blue crushed-leather, on trend, motorcycle jacket. Many people ask how to pair a motorcycle jacket with a little black dress? This is how. I added a belt that lends definition to my waist and a great knee-high boot to break up the pattern on my leg. Want to know the secret to getting your legs to look lean in a patterned legging? Wear "body-shaping tights" underneath your leggings. They keep your legs looking fit and in cold weather add a little warmth as well.

Many of you have loyally followed the "America's Most Stylish Blogger" competition for inspiration on how to style a single item in unique and different ways. Though you might not own the items we styled during the competition, there is a good chance you own a Little Black Dress. Stylelist and Bluefly's final challenge were tie dye leggings, a bit trendy for me but i managed to work them into a pretty chill ensemble. Leather jacket, white T-shirt, and doc martens - to add anything else would be over-the-top, the leggings definitely stand-out on their own.
For our last challenge item, Bluefly.com sent each blogger charcoal tie-dye stretch leggings by Plan B. I don't own anything like them in my closet, so the leggings were both a pleasant surprise and a bit of a challenge! But with their tapered leg and contemporary fit, they turned out to be comfortable and fun to wear!

To allow the tie-dye leggings to take center stage, I made sure the other elements in my outfit were basic black. I layered a cropped leather jacket over a plain silk tee, then tucked it into a drapey wrap skirt. I picked out a few strong accessories to complete the look, including a pair of studded boots, a studded belt and a silver statement necklace. Against the solid black pieces, the unique pattern of the leggings is an unexpectedly chic twist!

I think the final look is young and experimental, giving off a N.Y. meets L.A. vibe. While the silver studs and tie-dye are fun, trendy details, the outfit is still sleek and polished. This is something I'd change into after work on Friday, an outfit for a spontaneous evening when you don't have any plans except to have a fun time.

I was excited to work on the final challenge of the Bluefly / StyleList America's Most Stylish Blogger contest because it was indeed a challenge. The leggings we received aren't exactly my usual style, but I was very intrigued by them. The black, white and gray tie-dye looks almost like marble and creates an interesting textural effect.

While the pattern was something new and different for me, leggings are a staple of the season, so I treated them like any other pair. The next natural step for me is a tunic and boots. With these leggings, I wanted to create something simple, casual and cool, so I went for a soft, sheer, roomy white tee. A sharp blazer adds a little polish to the look. The structured yet organic feel of the statement necklace -- a collection of polished silvertone leaves -- provides a nice compliment to the look of the leggings. A pair of moss green ankle boots and a menswear-inspired fedora complete the look. I felt ready for a weekend in the city -- laidback and casual yet edgy and urban.

It was refreshing to work with something I probably would not have picked out myself, and I look forward to seeing how these cool patterned leggings work their way into my daily ensembles.
Are tie-dye leggings a fashion risk? Not when they're on-trend! (And if you'll remember, I wore a similar piece in Week #1 of this competition and had the experts reluctant to endorse them then. But the fashion tides have turned!)

Pairing these Plan B Charcoal Tie-Dyed Stretch Leggings with rock-chic accessories and an XL men's t-shirt turned into a dress, it's the way to go for an evening out on the town or a fashionable soiree. Super-spiked shoes (with extra straps, buckles, studding, and texturizing added to a pair of platform stripper heels), a magazine clutch (a clutch with a magazine cover glued to it), rhinestone earring turned into hand jewelry, a pyramid ring (okay, I'll admit I didn't make this one), and a long dangling chain earring complete the look and keep it edgy and glam. Say what's on your mind on your shirt using velcro letters - a total 80's throwback - and be a little in-your-face and tongue-in-cheek all at the same time.

Styling Tip: Run out of things to wear in your own closet? Raid the BF's! (That's BoyFriend - not Best Friend - unless your bestie happens to be male!) Oversized tees work great as dresses - and are experiencing a huge fashion comeback right now. Belt at the waist if you want to inject a little femininity to the look.
For the fifth and final challenge, we were tasked with creating a look using stretch tie-dye leggings by Plan B.

While I'm definitely a girl who appreciates all sorts of leg-wear; I usually stick with dark, flattering colors. For my final look, I revived my DIY black slashed leggings from November 2008 and layered them overtop, allowing the tie-dye pattern to peek through for a subtle edge. Okay, I'll admit it...I suppose this is also a way of rebelling against tie-dye, hence the traffic cones, but I really liked the combo look!

This shows more of my casual, every day style. In fact, I wore it to the office the day this photo was taken (they are super flex). Up top, I wore a tank dress with grayish blue tones to complement the tie-dye. I also chose to wear a denim motorcycle jacket, tall black wedges and my favorite necklace.

I think this was my favorite challenge because it best represents my personal style. If something doesn't work for me, I re-invent, whether that a shirt stolen from my boyfriend's closet or a dress worn upside down. By no means do I think this is "the way" to wear tie-dye leggings, I just had fun with it and made it work with items I already had. By the way, I just celebrated my two-year blog anniversary a few days ago and coincidentally, if you've been following the contest, you'll notice I'm newly brunette.

Check out my blog to see the other looks I considered and a DIY surprise in store for the leggings! When it comes to dressing for après ski, it's not just about warmth, but also great style.

Start with basic leggings, says Max Martinez, owner of MAX boutiques in Aspen, Denver and Boulder, Colo. "Look for anything from stretch denim to leather to wool, and then put on your great Rick Owens cardigan sweater and you're good to go," he says. "And Prada Sport always works for après ski."

Accessories count, too.

"You can't go out without a great cashmere scarf," Martinez says. "Muted tones to bright colors to fringe - that's the accessory for après ski - the accessory of the season is your big, beautiful scarf. Between leggings, Rick Owens and a good scarf, you're good to roll in Aspen, Colorado."

Fall and winter coats come in so many beautiful shapes, colors and textures this season, we almost can't wait for it to get really cold.

Even the puffer coat is taking on new slimmer proportions. "If you're wearing one, you won't also need a big heavy sweater," says stylist Meg Goldman. "Opt for skinny pants or a skinny boot. Break up the proportions." Should you prefer a feminized military coat or more ladylike looks -- they're all on the racks this season. And even though some coats certainly quality as investment items, there are many styles out there that appear to be much more expensive than they truly are.

It's not hard to find a look perfect for your style and budget -- we've narrowed it down down for you. Look through the photos below, taken on a cold day near the Brooklyn Bridge, to see some of the season's best looks.
This season, the classic coat comes many colors. The most important thing to remember: Avoid too much ornamentation.
The checked pattern has never gotten so much play. Tartan-loving fashionistas have plenty of options this season. Case-in-point: the a long coat, an au courant cape, or even a cooler-than-thou motorcycle jacket seen here.

Should you choose plaid as your exterior canvas, keep the rest of your outfit relatively clean so as to avoid looking like a mismatched Christmas present.
Which isn't to say that there isn't a place for mismatched patterns - lest we learn nothing from designer Dries van Noten!- but pick one item (ie Christine's leopard print scarf, right) and keep it in a relatively similar color scheme so the look is not too forced.

Shoe Tips

Slim a wide foot with a shoe that has a pointy toe. "Stuart Weitzman is amazing because even though it's full at the top, it doesn't look like a wide shoe," Zee says of Weitzman's Elastorama, $398; Zappos.com.

"Prints -- whether leopard print, snakeskin -- go with everything you have in your closet -- khakis, denim, skirts," Stephenson explains, pointing out Giuseppe Zanotti Rocia Print heels, $554; Zappos.com. "They're great for the office, for walking around and great for at night."

Chic shoes can be comfy. "Cole Haan does a great shoe, because what they've done is taken Nike technology and infused it into their shoe so it feels like a sneaker," Zee says of Cole Haan's Air Maggy ballet flat, $149.95; Zappos.com.

Wider calves? Opt for shoe booties over ankle boots. "Shoe boots are really elongating to the leg," Stephenson says.

Problem with cankles? Choose high heels in a neutral color. "The neutral shoe is a must-have for everyone," Glassman says. "You have to match a shoe to your skin tone... It really elongates your foot, makes it sexier and slimmer because you're really drawing the eye now from the toe all the way up, and you're not breaking the body, so it's a seamless, long, lean silhouette." He recommends Kate Spade's Susie pump, $328.95; Zappos.com.

For a long line, match your shoe to your tight, Glassman says: "Tights are very big this season, so it's very easy to do."

The hottest boot of the season: over the knees. "You want to wear a flat one, because if you wear a heel one, it gets a little too 'Pretty Woman'," Glassman says. One to try: See by Chloe's flat over-the-knee boots, $715; Zappos.com.

Impress with a ruffled shoe, like Be&D's Kan Kan platform sandal, $599; Zappos.com. "The ruffle on the shoe is fun," Stephenson says. "If you don't want to incorporate the biggest trend in fashion, which are ruffles everywhere, you can do it in an accessory."

Slouchy, baggy, cuffed and rolled, with rough and ready rips and tears – this fall's jean looks more like a denim Snuggie than the figure-hating, leg-hugging looks of recent years.
"But wear it less torn, the tear should be small if at all and you gotta mix it with a great shoe. " Even star moms are devotees of the boyfriend jean.
TEEN TREND #2: SHOULDER PADS
Call it the Bold Shoulder. "They're not exactly sculpted the way they were in the 80s, but you're seeing a lot more big shoulders," explains Bennett. "It's not the big, brazen shoulder or football player, but it's definitely got a little pad and bump at the edge," Bloch agrees.

How to steal the deal: The key here is how you wear it, not what you wear. "For women, as opposed to girls, mix padded shoulders with obviously modern accessories and hair – if you're old enough to have worn it in the 1980s, you don't want to look like you're stuck there," Bennett warns. Keep your coif effortless, and those shoulder pads will look less Joan and Alexis, more Carrie and co. "Very loose and casual, this has to be worn with very light, airy hair – tousled and beachy, like a one-sided pony tail," Bloch notes, "And to keep hair young, if it's gonna be 'done', it should be shiny and not teased."

TEEN TREND #3: NEON
The runways and catwalks looked like road safety PSAs for fall, covered in headlight and -line-grabbing neon colors: green, pink, yellow, orange. There were even slinky all-dayglo dresses.
"Don't spend a lot of money – buy it as a t-shirt to throw under a blazer," Bloch advises. Ditto a scarf or a tank top for a splash of brights.

If all else fails, one of those aforementioned slinky dayglo dresses (like Lucy Liu's) just might do the trick.

Soul Brother, FilmMagic

TEEN TREND #4: LEATHER
Skin on skin's a major fall trend. "It's everywhere: dresses, skirts, motorcycle jackets," raves Bennett.

Karl Prouse, Catwalking/Getty Images

How to steal the deal: "Think Moneypenny with sass, not motorcycle with gas," says Bennett. "Choose more classically cut pieces that have just been done in leather instead of fabric – a great simple sheath dress, a skirt that comes down to the knee made out of leather. The silhouette is a little more classic."

Kevin Mazur, WireImage for Frappe Inc.

TEEN TREND #5: THE STATEMENT BOOT
"The statement purse has been taken over by a statement shoe – women are obsessed with shoes because if your dress size goes from 6 to 16 any given season, you shoes stay the same size." This fall, it's boots that were made for vamping, from shoe-boots, platforms, biker boots.
Marc by Marc Jacobs

Imaxtree.com

How to steal the deal: Focus on platforms and chunky heels. "Don't go for a four inch platform, but a nice half inch is comfortable for running around in and it's actually practical," says Bennett. "A lot of trends this season were born from practicality in this economy and environment."

Bloch thinks the statement boot trend is the one every woman, mother or daughter, should follow this fall. "With a thick heel and a platform, you could jump in that SUV and go hit the supermarket."

As stylist for NBC's reality hit "The Biggest Loser," Liza Whitcraft has the skinny on looking good at any size. And like the show's dreaded weigh-in, her job has its highs and lows.

This season she's had the satisfying challenge of dressing Alison Sweeney after the host had her second child in May. "Every week, I had to put her in a smaller pair of jeans," says Whitcraft. "She's a size 4 now. She looks amazing."

She's also had the experience of putting contestants who were recently morbidly obese into size 6 dresses. "I have to admit, that's a fun day at the office."

Are the newly svelte shy about wearing something form-fitting after years of wearing baggy clothes to hide their girth?

"Hell no," says Whitcraft. "We usually pick big personalities for "The Biggest Loser" and they just want to go out there and show off. If anything, I have to keep them out of things that are skin tight."

Still, the stylist is charged with making all the show's contestants look trim for the season finale -- even if they're not down to their ideal weight. For that task, there is a lot of hidden help involved. Think : Spanx, elaborate bra fittings and compression T-shirts.

Here, Liza Whitcraft shares some of her behind-the-scenes slimming tricks with StyleLIst.

For curvy petites such as host Alison Sweeney:

Dark, boot cut jeans are your best bet. "Avoid boyfriend styles, anything tight or skinny," says Whitcraft. "Right now, for Alison, I am loving Joe's Jeans in the Petite Provocateur style. The leg break is perfect on a petite women. It adds so much height."

Heels rule. If you can wear a two-inch heel and be comfy, "Do it."

Wrap dresses are key. "I put Alison in a lot of Diane von Furstenberg. They are terribly flattering on her, but the truth is she's beautiful. She looks good in just about everything and can wear almost any color."

Great fitting T-shirts are key to a casual look, especially ones that don't cover too much, making you look heavier on top. "Avoid crew necks. Wear a V-neck whenever you can." She favors tees by Vince and James Perse for Sweeney.

As a mother of two who is far from a sample size and living in a non-fashion capitol, many trends touted by the Vogues, Glamours and W's of the world -- not to mention seen on designer runways -- might not actually be meant for me. It's time to put them to the test.

The Trend: Black Lipstick

Black lipstick is for Goth chicks, KISS tribute bands and Lily Munster right?

Well, apparently, it's now for fashion trendsetters, too. Rachel Roy, Yves Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen are among the designers who chose to send models with black pouts down their runways.

Cosmetic companies are joining the dark side, too. MAC's Style Black collection includes black lipstick and gloss, Chanel's Noir Obscurs features lipsticks in "eggplant black," "deep black red" and "brown black," Lancome's Piha Black gloss is launching soon and Urban Decay's Oil Slick lipstick is glossy black with sparkles.

Yep, fall's fashion roster is suiting up in black. But is it possible for black lips to score points, or will you just end up sidelined, looking like a "True Blood" extra?

What I Wore: MAC's Black Knight lipstick, a "creamy true black," $14 at maccosmetics.com.

I searched my neighborhood Rite Aid, Sally Beauty Supply and Ulta for a cheaper black lipstick brand, but came up empty.
Fall's new legwear has taken the conservative looks of seasons past and splashed them with stripes, dots, checks, and color blocks for gaze-at-me gams.

From the runway (think everyone from Balenciaga to Betsey Johnson) to retail, open weaves, jewel tone hues and embellished sheer styles have legs making serious statements as the temps turn cool.

"Patterned and textured legwear was all over the runways this year," says Maggie Adams, trend expert and spokesperson for Spanx. "I think women love it because it's a fun, easy and affordable way to update existing outfits in your closet."

"Nothing screams fall like tights and sweater dresses for women's fashion," says Jana O'Leary, spokesperson for Target. "Textured and patterned tights can instantly change a look, adding a personal touch to any fall ensemble."
Let's hear it for the boys!

Fall's biggest trends are all about taking a look at what is in your guy's closet, and making it work for you. First it was jeans, then cardigans. And, now, it's the jacket.
