In New York City last night, fashionistas and industry insiders headed to the 2009 Night of Stars Gala, thrown by Fashion Group International, for a little fun.

The star-studded event was held at the trendy Cipriani Wall Street location, and as promised had its fair share of, well, stylish stars!

From Emmy Rossum to Gwen Stefani, Eva Mendes to Mary J. Blige, the red carpet was filled with dazzling dresses and smiles.

At last night's Breast Cancer Care event in London (left), Geri Halliwell of Spice Girls fame wore a plunging purple halter dress that, shall we say, highlighted the focus of the night.

But it wasn't the first time Halliwell wore the low-cut, iridescent gown.

She also wore it to the Vanity Fair Oscar after party in 2002 (right).

Well, hello four eyes!

The most noteworthy accessory sported by Emmys leading men sat on the bridge of their noses.

The look was geek, but oh so chic thanks to Justin Timberlake, Simon Baker, Michael J. Fox, Kiefer Sutherland and Kevin Bacon, who all paired dark, thick glasses with their red carpet formal wear.

Their studious eye wear choices seemed to call on the retro influences of best drama winner, "Mad Men." The result was a sexy Clark Kent-esque vibe.

While watching the Emmys last night, we got the feeling that Heidi Klum is always pregnant on the carpet.

So we took a look back, and guess what? She is!

(Kind of.)

Aside from her baby bump at this year's Emmy Awards, Klum was with child at the 2006 and 2005 shows as well.

She wore a black strapless Marchesa dress this year, a one-shoulder red dress in '06, and a flowy floral number in '05.

Is it fair that she looks that good while she's that pregnant?

"Gossip Girl" star Leighton Meester attended the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards in a white Greek goddess gown by Bottega Veneta.

At first glance, it appeared to be just another flowy frock. But upon closer inspection, we noticed two cloud-like humps -- one at each shoulder.

The huge knots of fabric became a total distraction. And what could have been a pretty, yet average dress, turned into a couture conundrum. It reminded us of something, but we just couldn't put our finger on it.

Until we cracked the fashion code. It was full-on John Belushi donning a toga in "Animal House." But there was something else at work. Something more feminine than a frat boy in a sheet.

Then it came to us: Lynda Carter as "Wonder Woman" -- note Meester's wide gold cuffs courtesy of jeweler Cathy Waterman.

"Don't know much about history, don't know much biology..." But we clearly know our fashion math!

Most of the fashion on the 2009 Emmy red carpet wasn't exactly out there. But there were quite a women who weren't afraid to put their best assets out there.

Yes, we are talking about breasts.

Padma Lakshmi; Blake Lively; Sarah Silverman; and Marcia Gay Harden (above, clockwise from top left) were among those who took the plunge.

Did it work?

I don't know. Nothing wrong with a little skin; what woman isn't above showing off sometimes? But in some cases, these styles just looked painful or a little scary.

Better to learn how to get a perfect bra-fitting and lift up the girls a little more gracefully, in our opinion.

Drew Barrymore has had her ups and downs over the years.

We spotted her recently in Toronto wearing some questionable outfits, as well as two-tone hair--Drew dipped her ends in black dye--that made us a little uneasy about her upcoming Emmy appearance.

But lo and behold, Emmy night arrives and our favorite Charlie's Angel shows up in this pretty pink Monique Lhuillier.

The simple strapless top, flared chiffon bottom, and of course Drew's simple updo make for a fabulous overall effect. It reminds us of Gwyneth's pink power dress a few years back.

Meanwhile, on the worst dressed front, we couldn't help but cringe at Sarah Silverman's choice.

While the comedian had us cracking up with her mustache gag, we wondered why the lithe star would choose a dress that adds so much width to her tiny frame?

Heidi Klum looked ready to pop when she hit the red carpet for the 2009 Emmy Awards. The model/mogul wore a black strapless Marchesa dress, and looked absolutely stunning.

Meanwhile, another soon-to-be mom, reality star Kourtney Kardashian, also looked fabulous in a floor-length strapless dress.

Both stars make those big bellies look good, even while standing on the red carpet among some of Hollywood's best bodies.

Every year, we beauty editors breathlessly await the Emmy Awards' red carpet, to see who's wearing the best blush and has the prettiest pout.

And every year, we're totally disappointed.

You see, stars only wear three looks to awards shows. They go with classic red lips and bare eyes, smoky eyes with pale lips, or that natural, I'm-just-this-gorgeous-without-cosmetics look.

Yes, they look pretty, but their makeup is kind of a snore.

So we asked Scott Barnes, the mastermind behind the looks of Jennifer Lopez, Carrie Underwood, Celine Dion and many others, to explain why. "Hollywood is a different animal than New York. In LA it's not about wearing a trend. It's about being stunning." We get it, nobody wants to take a risk lest they be lambasted by the press.

But he did agree with us that stars could pump it up a bit, or as Barnes put it "move out of their comfort zone." And he gave us three examples of when he got Lopez to move out of her comfort zone, to gorgeous results. "They're the ones she'll bring up years later," he said.

At last night's American Latin Music Awards, Eva Longoria kept the audience entertained with multiple dress changes--something the star is known for.

However, we didn't expect that Longoria would wear three one-shoulder dresses, nor did we expect that two would be from the same designer--Gustavo Cadile.

Cadile provided a green tafetta number, as well as a custom pink tulle gown.

While poufy dresses can be prom-like in real life, Longoria can really do no wrong.

The actress--and former fitness instructor--maintains an incredible bod. She's even presented awards in the past wearing a bathing suit on live televison.

Kim Kardashian made an appearance at the Jill Stuart Spring 2010 show today sporting a perfectly styled retro 'do.

Combined with a shiny black one-shoulder dress and flawless makeup, she was a total throwback, and we just had to ask the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star where the inspiration for this upscale look came from.

"I love old Hollywood actresses like Ava Gardner and Audrey Hepburn," she said.

"There's so many different people that I channel, depending on the look that I feel like I'm going for."

And about that makeup. We asked the flawless-faced Kim what products she loves.

"I love a good concealor - YSL is great," she said. "I love a mascara that's by Anastacia, the eyebrow lady, that's pretty amazing. She has the best mascara."

Kim also revealed that she gets her famous glow using blush by MAC and a matte bronzer by Smashbox.

As editors, we don't necessarily excel at math, but our staff attempted to crack the code of Gaga's VMA style.

There was much debate, but we settled on one part Marlene Deitrich, plus one part Phantom of the Opera.

The result? Gaga's creepy couture.

Other toss-ins included: The Crow, an actual crow, Zorro, The Man in the Iron Mask, Dita Von Teese, Marilyn Monroe, and Marilyn Manson.

    Looking like a high fashion mad hatter, Gaga kicked off the red carpet in a Phantom of the Opera-esque face mask, a couture neck brace, and a Jean Paul Gaultier dress.

    On stage, it was time to reprise her hit "Paparazzi" with a futuristic white cutout leotard, fishnets, and over-the-knee boots.

    When it came time to accept her award, Gaga stepped out in head-to-toe red lace, as well as a crown-like topper. Thankfully, she eventually removed her mask to address her fans face-to-face.

    To meet the press, Gaga wore a Sasha Fierce-style one-piece with exaggerated lines, and glittery leg warmers.

Gaga wasn't the only one making a scene with her style last night.

Pink pulled a page from Lil' Kim's book at the VMAs when she showed up on stage in a purple unitard...oh, and a pastie.

The former gymnast performed some aerial stunts and we were amazed by her strength--not to mention the fact that she was singing upside down.

The biggest feat of all? That she miraculously avoided any indecent exposure.

Lady Gaga staged a one-woman revival of "Phantom of the Opera" by wearing a gold mask across the left side of her face.

She wore a black lace Jean Paul Gaultier dress, which she paired with a feathered neck brace by a London-based designer.

Who else but gaga could make a neck brace fashionable?

The best part? Kermit the Frog rolled down the window of her limo, and Gaga leaned in for a kiss! (Kermie's gonna have some serious explaining to do to when he gets home to Miss Piggy! Gaga is already a touchy subject.)

We suspect Gaga is hoping kissing the world's most famous frog will help her find one heck of a fabulous prince.

The VMAs are the ideal opportunity for stylish musicians and hot young actresses to make a standout fashion statement.

But what happens when a star finds herself echoing someone else's sartorial sentiment on the red carpet? As in, wearing the exact same dress? (It's like reliving your worst prom nightmare!)

Well, tonight, we found out. Both Pink and Shakira sparkled in Balmain's studded leather strapless minidress from the designer's Fall 2009 ready-to-wear collection.

The only noticable difference was that Pink paired her frock with black patent pumps, while Shakira went (predictably) the seductress route, opting for over-the-knee boots to complete her look.

Luckily, the two laughed it off when seen together, but we think it may have been a pre-planned publicity stunt to garner extra attention for the two singers (we're writing about it, so job well done). Otherwise, someone at Balmain is going to receive two very angry phone calls tomorrow.
