It could be the world's most expensive vending machine, or the next step in the evolution of the hotel lobby gift shop.

Interview Magazine and the Mondrian Miami have partnered to offer guests an incredibly sophisticated answer to lost luggage or last-minute gift giving. Stocked with everything from the sundry to the one of a kind, items sold represent 40 years of pop culture, celebrating Interview Magazine's 40th anniversary.

Called the Semi-Automatic, the sleek machine, an oversized box, really, occupies and entire wall in the lobby of the hotel. Shoppers can scroll through available items on a digital screen, swipe a credit card and then retrieve their purchase in its sealed bag.

But if you think you're going to get a toothbrush or some cold medicine, think again.

This machine houses an ultra-posh selection of rare art work, experiences and very cool collectibles including a Dolce & Gabbana "We Love Madonna" tank signed by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, a Jil Sander limited edition Foujita "Grande Composition" T-shirt, Vena Cava limited edition canvas shoes, a John Hardy cuff and trip to the John Hardy creative studio in Bali, a vintage shopping trip with Interview's Contributing Editor (and sometime StyleList contributor) Fabiola Beracasa, a year's supply of Ben & Jerry's ice cream, the Art Production Fund's "Prop Art" Prada Marfa sign as seen on "Gossip Girl" and much more.
We want to know what happens when the bag gets caught on the way down... Might need to call on The Fonz.

Black Friday is today! So are you gonna do it? Brave the crowds?

This year retailers -- smarting from the worst holiday season in a decade last year -- have come up with a variety of new tactics to offer all Black Friday all the time this weekend.

So maybe you're even already home, nice and cozy with a cup of tea after fighting the crowds during midnight madness at an outlet center. Or maybe you wrapped it all up while waiting for the turkey to roast yesterday, taking advantage of the online specials that, this year, began on Thanksgiving (those included Target and J. Crew).

Or maybe you are just putting off the pain, planning to take advantage of the fact that numerous sales extend over the weekend this year. (Endless.com, here I come!)

The National Retail Federation says up to 134 million people are expected to shop over this holiday weekend, That estimate is up from the 128 million people who said they planned to shop during Thanksgiving in 2008, as first reported by Reuters.

At the same time, The Conference Board (that's a go-to economic forecasting group) predicts American households will spend an average of $390 on Christmas gifts this year, -- that's down from $418 last year, according to the The New York Times.

Basically, shoppers want bargains in a big way. (Not for nothing, "Ugg boots Black Friday" is among the top Google searches today.) And stores want to move merchandise.

We find merit in both goals. To the mall!

If you need suggestions for deals, check out great gifts for gadget lovers on AOL Shopping and the lowdown on the Big Box stores on Walletpop.

And before you head out check out what to wear while holiday shopping to look and feel your best.
If you're J. Crew's creative director Jenna Lyons, you spray-paint some gnome statuettes and smash a few ornaments.

Lyons gives us a first look at J. Crew's holiday catalog (out December 2) and highlights some of the best gift choices.

One of the biggest challenges to this season's catalog is originality, says Lyons. "How do you do holiday without being corny, instantly recognizable but not overdone?" One way J. Crew avoids holiday fatigue is to use the color red only for December catalogs.

"We purposely stay away from red the rest of the year. We don't use red type or photograph red clothes at other times," she explains. When crimson appears this month, "people notice a change. It's subtle but it's a signifier."

The cover and first set of women's pages glow with a deep, winey hue -- spiked with bright, cherry-red accessories: Red ladders, unspooled ribbons, broken ornaments and yes, red-painted gnome figurines give a fun, slightly chaotic look to the photos.

For Lyons, this bit of messiness ties into a core J. Crew concept: "the imperfect perfect." Instead of an impeccable image, the joy's in the lived-in, unpolished detail.

That old-chestnut phrase "the gift that keeps on giving" inspired new temptations. A women's Jewelry of the Month Club and men's Tie of the Month Club join the original shoe club. Every month, members receive a new accessory. These won't be cookie-cutter choices; the selection will be made in real time, to pick up on developing trends throughout the year.

Red is the signature color of each December catalog. It's used playfully here, showing up in little bursts so that finding the red element is almost a game.

J. Crew

"There's this idea of a holiday picture that has to be perfect," said Lyons, but J. Crew shrugs off that formality for a lived-in look. Some of these gnome statuettes were painted Rudolf-red outside a Crewcuts store in New York and immediately drew a crowd. "People were offering to buy them right of the street," remembers Lyons.

J. Crew

Some of the women's pages lighten up with pastels instead of the usual holiday jewel tones. Lyons was keen to tweak the red/green standard and decided to make these settings "pale and soft, like you added eggnog."

J. Crew

The success of the Shoe of the Month Club sparked a few sequels, including a Jewelry of the Month Club. Lyons champions gifts that extend beyond December. "When I was first starting out, I gave magazine subscriptions since it was so nice to have something arrive every month," she recalled.

J. Crew

These colorful packs have a wonderfully tongue-twisting name: Fjällräven Kanken. They're a standby for Swedish schoolkids and are now carried in the Crewcuts line. Lyons can vouch for their appeal; her little boy loves his backpack so much he sometimes carries it to bed.

J. Crew

The holiday catalog also introduces an exclusive range of Want Organic computer cases and weekend bags, perfect for travelers and anyone latched to a laptop. The bags won Lyons over with a luxuriously sleek profile and eco-friendly credibility. Look for thoughtful details like the two-toned zipper. The designers developed the travel bags with a timeframe in mind; the one offered here holds 72 hours' worth of gear.

J. Crew

In one of the catalog's captions, Spencer Lyons jokingly (or not so?) makes a public plea for this Baracuta G9 wax jacket. "Not yet, Christmas is coming!" Jenna teased back. If the jacket looks a bit familiar, picture it in red on a certain 1950s heartthrob---then wrap it up with a DVD of "Rebel Without a Cause."

The importance of family is another key theme in this month's catalog. In the men's pages you'll find the Family Guys, each a fellow personally connected with the J. Crew staff who was photographed with loved ones.

And who's that toward the back? Lyons herself, alongside her grinning brother and father. "It was not my idea!" she laughed. "We weren't able to get someone at the last minute so we were stand-ins. I was not the first pick, I'll have you know!" The photo session was a happy impromptu reunion, a gift in itself: "My father was beaming."

Lyons' brother models a Baracuta G9 jacket that he put at the top of his wish list. These classic British waxed-cotton, tartan-lined jackets are a J. Crew exclusive in the U.S. (We ladies will have to be patient a bit longer; a resized women's Baracuta arrives in the spring.)

A pair of menswear-inspired foulard silk pajamas tops Lyons' own wish list, along with a platinum-colored silk bow-tie skirt. "I'll have to order fast since we didn't order too many," she realizes, jumping into the holiday shopping fray along with the rest of us.

Holiday gift guides. They're pretty much everywhere this time of the year. Random picks for random people.

So this year we decided to look through all the goodies out there through the eyes of five style personalities. Match the personalities to the people in your life, and choose from our carefully selected picks. It's a gift guide with style, for people with style.

We''ll start today with the Design Guru. You know her: She has a streamlined, uncluttered home. She's done wearing a trend by the time you hear about it. She may speak German and wear bold makeup. You'll never see her in jeans and a T-shirt. Unless it's a T-shirt by James Perse or Helmut Lang.

She doesn't have cable TV, but does have a big library of books (artfully arranged of course) and sleek European electronic devices. You secretly want her life a just little -- but then again you could never leave a dirty coffee cup in the sink, and who wants that?

Here are some gifts we bet are on her list. Come back Monday to see our next holiday gift guide.

My Style: I almost always go with classic over trendy. I like fabrics that feel good, and clothes that never go out of style. I have certain mainstream brands that I'm extremely loyal to, and have gotten some of my best tips from celebrities (and their stylists!) about up-and-coming designers.

Holiday Gifts I Want: A classic Chanel black flap bag has always been my ideal gift (I'll keep dreaming...), but I'm always fond of anything by True Religion (their pants are the next best thing to half an hour on the treadmill) and love a classic camel coat. I'm also eyeing some new riding boots (so comfortable, so stylish), a printed bikini for my next trip to Miami, and a few beauty extras (stocking stuffers, anyone?) I couldn't resist! (See other editors' picks by clicking here.)

Black Friday is a great time to stock up on marked down fine jewelry. Photo: Getty Images

When you think of Black Friday shopping, the first thing that comes to mind is the crazy people waiting in line at the crack of dawn for the best deals on home electronics, toys and the odd kitchen gadget.

With so much attention being given to all of these non-fashion items, does it even make sense for the fashion set to hit the mall? In a word, yes.

While you may not find the most recent, cutting-edge designer merchandise at deep discounts, there are many style items to look for and even stock up on during Black Friday madness. And with an economy that still has everyone pinching pennies, retailers are strategizing on how best to capture your dollars early, with deals on items not normally on sale at this time of year.

"True luxury items like cashmere, shearling, leather and functional outerwear will be topping the list of things to look for, because normally, these items don't go on sale until after the holiday," Tom Julian, trend expert and president of Tom Julian Group, a retail consultancy, told StyleList. "I'm intrigued by all the early sales for items not normally on promotion before Christmas."

Julian, who shops in two-to-three cities each week, has already seen some of these items. "Italian cashmere, Napa leather and down-filled jackets are already on promotion. I've seen outerwear at 30 percent off. There have been so many incentives and special insider type deals already," he said, citing "Friends and Family" promotions and "buy one, get one" sales. "Serious retailers have to prove that they have the serious deals."

Department stores at all levels including Macy's, Lord & Taylor, JCPenney and even Kohl's are offering great buys on things like cashmere sweaters. There will be great deals on outerwear in general and luxury coats in down, leather and shearling specifically. Look for special buys in fine jewelry, diamond studs in particular.

While the idea of a $9.99 George Foreman grill is pretty tempting, $100 cashmere sweaters on sale for $34.99 at Kohl's "Make Every Minute Count" sale is just a little more delicious to fashion shoppers. The chain, which opens its doors at 4 am Friday is also offering 50 to 60 percent off its Apt. 9 sportswear and its fine jewelry.

Target is offering special pricing on its exclusive items like Converse, Carlos Falchi and Anna Sheffield's limited-edition collection and has created a holiday collection, featuring dresses for $39.99 for the occasion. For early shoppers, Target is giving away a free limited-edition reusable shopping bag designed by internationally-renowned Target designer partner Marcel Wanders to the first 500 shoppers at each store.

Lord & Taylor is featuring trend-right women's pea coats for $89.99. Liz Rodbell, Lord & Taylor's general merchandise manager added, "We have terrific values planned for Black Friday and this important shopping weekend throughout the entire store. Our pricing strategy is planned to offer compelling value for both the self shopper and gift purchaser."
Continue reading Black Friday Sales for Fashionistas

Black Friday Sales for Fashionistas originally appeared on StyleList on Wed, 25 Nov 2009 14:15:00 EST. Mark your calendars for November 30 -- that's when the Maison Martin Margiela Artisanal Collection will be available for the first time ever online, at Yoox.com. (It was previously sold exclusively at Margiela boutiques.)

The avant-garde Maison Martin Margiela label has had a cult-following since the '80s. And the artsy Artisinal Collection (including both men's and women's garments) will feature rare, one-off pieces that have been reworked by hand in Margiela's Parisian atelier.

Starting on Monday, Yoox.com will devote a special section of its Website to the 100 garments for sale, which include a "disco ball top" covered in mini mirrored squares, a dress made out of records, a wedding gown created from three other vintage wedding dresses, and the shaggy Margiela wigs jacket, which is, as it sounds, made out of wigs.

Each of the pricey pieces will be on the site until they sell out and a portion of all proceeds will go to the Rosa Spier House in Holland, a non-profit organization offering housing to retired artists and academics.

And now, Reason #458 you'll need to schedule a Cindy Crawford wake-up call.

A new survey says that up to 134 million shoppers will be descending on malls and shops the Black Friday weekend, Reuters reports.

(And what do you want to bet that 133,999,999 of them will be ahead of you in the checkout line?)

According to the news service, a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation found that 57 million consumers planned to shop over the holiday weekend, with another 77 million saying they would go shopping but would check for deals first.

That's up from last year, Reuters reports, when a total of 128 million people expressed interest in taking part in the shopping mayhem.

And look out for those early birds. Ten percent of shoppers polled said they would be willing to shop during the hours of midnight and 3am, while a quarter of shoppers planned to hit the shops in the early morning hours, Reuters reports.

The NRF survey also found that that most popular shopping destinations will be discount retailers (66.3 percent), department stores (62.4 percent), electronics stores (40 percent) and clothing retailers (36 percent).

Plan accordingly.

For a match made in heaven, Saks has teamed up with Microsoft for the ultimate holiday "windows."

In this latest case of high fashion meets high-tech, the luxury department store and Microsoft Windows 7 have created Saks' famed annual window displays, which are being unveiled tonight at the NYC flagship store.

Along with the usual array of glistening snowflakes -- featuring 7,200 energy efficient lights, of course -- the retailer is using the new computer software to power 3-D animated holiday displays based on the children's storybook "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Flake."

Saks shoppers will also get to check out Windows 7-based computers first-hand by heading to floors eight and nine.
For some holiday wish list persuasion, customers will be able to publicize their desired gifts via Twitter.

Tweets with the hashtag #holidaywindows will appear on the Saks window facing 50th Street -- that should work a bit better than leaving pages ripped from magazines around the house.

And if technology isn't your thing, maybe Kristen Chenoweth is -- the actress will be hosting the event.

Saks isn't the only retailer gearing up for the holiday season. One department store is offering a chance to win a pampered shopping spree on Black Friday via its Facebook page.
Saks Teams With Microsoft Windows 7 for Holiday Displays originally appeared on StyleList on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 17:45:00 EST. Alright, ladies, sharpen your talons.

You're going to need them to claw through the fashion-hungry throngs waiting to get their paws on a pair of these lustful Jimmy Choo & Hunter wellies which just became available again after a quick spring sellout.

As we reported back in April, Jimmy Choo and Hunter collaborated on a rare specimen of ultra chic rain boots.

The croc embossed style -- with gold buckle hardware and metal rivets -- had woman hoping to channel their inner Kate Moss clamoring to snag a pair.

It's no surprise that the boot quickly sold out on both sides of the Atlantic, but not before celebs including Rachel Bilson, Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston had secured theirs.

The Jimmy Choo for Hunter boots, which retail for $395, are finally back in stock at Jimmy Choo boutiques. Run, don't walk!

Jimmy Choo seems to have a foot in everything these days! Read about the luxury brand's collaboration with H&M.

It's the end of an era.

JCPenney is discontinuing its biannual "Big Book" catalog and instead will concentrate its efforts on creating smaller, more targeted catalogs, online selling and social media exposure. Case in point: the retailer's recent foray onto Facebook.

The days of pouring over a telephone book sized tome -- page-after-page of tantalizing toys, clothes, shoes and home furnishings -- for hours on end are coming to a close. The current issue is JCPenney's last one.

Reasons for its demise range from the increasing costs of paper and mailing and environmental concerns about wasting paper to the availability of entire collections online versus a few outfits on a catalog page.

With the discontinuation of this catalog, JCPenney anticipates a year-over-year reduction of 25 to 30 percent in paper used for catalogs in 2010.

"Big book catalogs have become less relevant as customers have embraced shopping online, where they have ready access to our entire assortment at any time on jcp.com," Mike Boylson, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, said in a release.

In its heyday, the 36-year-old Big Book ranged from 900 to 1,500 pages and surpassed $1 billion in sales in 1979.

The Sears Catalog was the longest running "Big Book" catalog, but was discontinued in 1993 after being published 106 years.

While online shopping might be the future, we're certainly going to miss JCPenney's massive catalog!

But not all catalogs are changing -- take a peak at this retailer's over-the-top catalog. Lisa A. Kline's wardrobe styling of vice presidential-nominee and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin caused a political uproar during last year's campaign, and now she is finally telling her side of the story.

Kline, 47, a New York mother of three, says the $150,000-plus wardrobe she helped select for Palin and her brood was not "as outrageous as it seems... considering the scope of the job," as reported by New York Times, Kline added that her $54,900 fee included costs for an assistant and some expenses.

Kline also says the high fee was justified because styling the Palins included a last-minute holiday weekend assignment that left Kline so busy she slept only a few hours at a time. "It's very hard to put a figure on a 24-hour day," she told the Times.

The story reports that Kline is a self-employed fashion consultant, specializing in corporate execs and TV news personalities. She is not the Lisa Kline who owns the Los Angeles boutique with the same name.

In what soon became known as "Wardrobegate," Kline dressed Palin in Valentino, Tahari, Prada and Jimmy Choo, among other labels. She says in the article that no one questioned the amount she spent.

One of the biggest shopping sprees came right before the Republican National Convention -- over Labor Day weekend -- when Kline tells the Times she was asked to fly to Minneapolis to dress the entire Palin family, including her husband, children and Bristol Palin's then-boyfriend Levi Johnston.

The last-minute trip to a Minneapolis Neiman Marcus was made to dress the family. Kline tells the source that when the purchases were rung up she was not asked for payment. "Apparently it had been prearranged," she says.

Kline describes Palin in the story as a size 4 or 6 and "very attractive, with beautiful skin, if a bit dowdy before the transformation. ...She was very, very sweet. I felt comfortable right away with her. She definitely had an opinion about the clothes, but it was a gentle opinion. If she didn't like something, it was, 'Oh, I don't think so.'"

As for that $25,000 Valentino jacket from Saks that Palin wore during her RNC acceptance speech?

Kline tells the Times she found the jacket to be a little too grand, so she removed its gold buttons and a big swoop of fabric in front, as well as shortened the sleeves to three-quarter length.

"I felt I had achieved my goal," Kline says in the story. "I thought she looked great. I really did. It was perfect for the occasion."

We're not so sure Valentino would agree!

When she was a flat-broke (but "not flat busted") student at the University of Idaho in the 1980s, Sarah Palin dressed in the frumpy-freshman's uniform of tee shirts and shorts. But by the time she took the national stage this summer, she had a chic RNC-financed wardrobe that could have paid for the $125,000 dump truck penciled into the Wasilla City budget -- with enough left over for a family shopping spree at Alaska's first Target.
Even by 1984 standards, Palin's swimsuit for the Miss Alaska pageant was a bit modest . Here, she models a red one-piece, which she later swapped for a "Dynasty"-worthy navy sequined gown. Though Palin snagged Miss Congeniality honors in the race, she lost the title to Maryline Blackburn, the first African-American to represent Alaska in the Miss American contest.

Private online sales are definitely the new black.

On the very chic heels of Daily Candy and Saks Fifth Avenue -- both just announced they were entering the arena alongside already established names like Gilt Groupe and Haute Look -- comes Market for Drama, a members-only sample sale site devoted to luxury beauty, which launched today.

Market for Drama is divided into two parts: "The Shop" and "The Journal," which will feature original editorial content. The look is very edgy and fashion-y a la Barneys and Purple Magazine.

To gain access to the site you need to be invited by an existing member or you can complete a questionnaire. Each shopping event will take place for 3-5 days and offer up to 70% off retail prices.

"We give beauty a more modern look and feel," CEO Stephanie Nash told StyleList. "We might not always feature brands that people know by name, but the products are photographed and described in such a way that informs and encourages the user to learn more about them."

The assortment of brands lined up so far include Paula Dorf, M Lab, and Alison Raffaele. The shopping launch event will feature Sjal, a scientifically advanced, holistic line of skincare favored by Demi Moore, Angelina Jolie and Uma Thurman.

$6.4 billion dollars worth of gift cards went unused in 2008. Photo: Pat Wellenbach, AP

Chances are you still have unused gift cards stashed in a drawer somewhere -- and the Federal Reserve isn't too happy about it.

According to consulting firm TowerGroup, Americans spent $88.4 billion on gift cards in 2008 yet a whopping $6.4 billion went unused. And that's an improvement from the previous year, when $97 billion in gift cards were purchased but $8 billion weren't redeemed, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Currently, gift card issuers are largely unregulated with various fees and expiration dates, but with the Federal Reserve's new regulations proposed yesterday, this might not be the case for long.

The central banking system noted in its report that 95 percent of Americans have received or purchased a gift card at some point, and that the proposed new rules would limit the fees retailers and issuers like MasterCard or Visa would be allowed to impose on card holders.

Under the proposed laws, retailers and credit card companies can charge no more than one service or dormancy fee a month per gift card and will be required to extend expiration dates to a minimum of five years.

If the regulations are finalized, the laws will be part of the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009 but won't go into effect until August 2010.
We reported impressive crowds and die-hard fans for the Jimmy Choo for H&M launch in New York this weekend, but the high-low collaboration isn't just a hit on this side of the pond.

Despite the rain, UK shoppers also queued up to snatch up the affordable capsule collection, which sold out in mere hours, reports the Daily Mail UK.

But some shoppers were out to make a buck. Even with new buying limits -- shoppers can only buy one size per style of shoe -- Jimmy Choo for H&M heels hit eBay less than 24 hours after the collection's launch.

Sellers willing to part with their hard-won heels hit some major pay dirt. Several pieces including a peep-toe bootie sold on the online auction site for double the price, reports the Daily Mail UK.

If you missed out on the luxury-meets-fast fashion collaboration the first go-around, don't fret: A spokesperson for H&M told the same source that stores would be replenishing stock with another shipment of Jimmy Choo for H&M goodies.
