We've witnessed "Mad Men's" world of coiffed women, dapper but philandering men and retro fashions strike a serious sartorial chord.

And StyleList has previously reported on fashion retailers Banana Republic and Brooks Brothers collaborating with AMC's hit series on limited edition lines.

But now, small vintage shops are benefiting from the latest trend: "Mad Men"-themed parties, reports Reuters.

"I've been selling a lot of looks from the late 1950's and 1960's with all these 'Mad Men' parties going on," Lillyan Peditto, owner of New York City's vintage shop The Family Jewels, told the news site.

Why the sudden urge for retro costume parties, and before Halloween?

Sarah Capozzi, a clinical social worker from New Hampshire, who is organizing her own "Mad Men"-insired fête, gave the source her theory:

"[It's] a chance to step outside of ourselves and come to a place in society where people answer the phone politely and wear fedoras to work or gloves while driving ... it's civilized!"

So, have you thrown or attended a "Mad Men"-themed party? Leave a comment!
The fashion world continues to go mad for "Mad Men."

In honor of the debut of the limited edition "Mad Men" suit, Brooks Brothers converted the fifth floor of its Madison Avenue store in Midtown Manhattan Tuesday to a classically masculine bar, complete with "patrons" (mannequins) clad in outfits borrowed from the show's wardrobe.

Martinis, Manhattans and merriment were the order of the evening, though it was not quite as boisterous as a Sterling Cooper office party.

The show's costume designer Janie Bryant, dressed in a modern sequined dress from Jovanni and a Dolce & Gabbana tailored jacket, shared some of her secrets about our favorite characters with StyleList.

StyleList: What's the style of Don Draper (played by Jon Hamm)?

Bryant: For me, he's always very masculine, very minimal in his color palette with dark browns and grays -- always very masculine tones. Even if he wears a Glen plaid, it will be in the grays.

StyleList: In Rome, Don Draper wore a powder blue jacket -- it was as if a whole new day had dawned with Don Draper going casual.

Bryant: I designed that sports coat for him. They were on vacation. It was their romantic time together and we were seeing this couple in a different situation that we never seen them in. It was about that couple being in a different environment.

StyleList: Let's talk about Betty (played by January Jones). She has been wearing some interesting dresses, like the one she wore to the Rockefeller fundraiser at her house.
He spends half of each year -- literally six months -- shopping for decorative objects, furniture, textiles, crafts and other treasures. And now we get to go with him.

Keith Johnson, Anthropologie's buyer-at-large, is about to take us all along for the ride through his new show, "Man Shops Globe," which is set to debut on the Sundance Channel, Wednesday, October 7 at 10 pm.

At his premiere party in the Rockefeller Center, NYC Anthropologie store, Johnson gave us a quick preview and some well-tested shopping tips.

StyleList: Shopping for a living is a dream assignment for many -- what are the hazards of the job?
Keith Johnson: If you make a mistake when you're a tourist and come back with one trinket that you regret, you can re-gift it. We now have 130 stores, so I could get myself into deep, deep trouble.

SL: How do you cope with your mistakes?
KJ: Thankfully, there's something known as mark-downs, so I don't have to look at my mistakes for too long. There's a heartbreak to falling in love with something in a field in France, in a souk in Turkey or a temple in India that will look really silly in someone's living room. I still do bring some crazy things home.

SL: Tell us about one ...
KJ: About 10 years ago, I bought a giant bottle of champagne. It's about 10 feet tall and you can actually go into it. It was an advertising thing from the 1930s. I bought it from a warehouse in England from some guy who got it 30 years before and he didn't know what to do with it. I thought it was just the greatest thing. And I still think it's great, but not for the stores -- they just don't know what to do with it. It's still sitting in our warehouse.
Continue reading Meet the Man Behind Anthropologie's Amazing Finds. Designer shopping site yoox.com is bringing the past into the future on June 4 by offering a rare collection of vintage Pucci pieces online and through a new iPhone app.

Yoox.com collected more than two dozen printed Pucci pieces -- dresses, scarves, pants, and tops, in addition to swimwear, handbags, and jewelry -- from American and European vintage collectors and dealers. And these are authentic vintage pieces, true Emilio Pucci designs (as opposed to the relaunch of the Pucci label under his daughter's direction). Prices start at $150.

You can get in on the action where ever you happen to be when the sale begins -- the office, at home, on the street -- if you have an iPhone. Yoox.com's new mobile app will offer users the opportunity to purchase the goods on the go.
Vintage Pucci Available on New iPhone App originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 29 May 2009 18:39:00 EST. We are so jealous of Rachel Sarnoff from EcoStiletto, the super-fun and stylish site all about easy ways to be fabulous and eco-friendly. The site has Rachel's new interview with one of our style heroines, the divine Dita Von Teese. They chatted about Dita's attention-getting vintage wardrobe, fashion icons, young Hollywood style, and her thoughts on being an "accidental ecoista."

Despite Dita's frenetic pace - she just got back from a star turn in Paris at renowned Crazy Horse theater, has two new burlesque shows in the works and a book coming out with famed photographer Sheryl Nields -- she is always turned out in impeccable vintage style, including her signature cinched-waist designer frocks.

It's the glamour - plus the frequently friendlier price tags - of vintage that have always appealed to Dita. One thing she hadn't considered? The green angle of vintage.
Continue reading Dita Von Teese - Vintage Style Icon and "Accidental Ecoista"

Dita Von Teese - Vintage Style Icon and "Accidental Ecoista" originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 01 May 2009 17:15:00 EST.

Karen Elson did. In her career, the flame-haired beauty has been a face of Yves Saint Lauren, Chanel, Burberry, Vuitton, Versace and more. But having nabbed the rock star hubby (Jack White from the White Stripes) and settled down in Nashville, Elson and her partner Amy Patterson turned their attention to creating Venus and Mars: The Showroom, a hip men's and women's vintage boutique.

(The store has an official web site on which not much happens; in true hipster form it's better to head to its MySpace page to find out what's going on. Here you will learn that the store is 95, single, and also a Scorpio.)

We recently caught up with Stop Staring! head designer and founder Alicia Estrada. For more than ten years, Stop Staring! has been creating vintage inspired dresses that look great on all shapes and sizes. (Every style is available up to size 18 and many styles go up to a women's 26.) We chatted with Alicia to find out her tips for young designers.
Continue reading Stop Staring! Can't get enough inauguration-themed news about fashion designers who look to the trashcan for inspiration? Good, because that's what this post is about. The morning after election night 2008, Nancy Judd made a bee line for the dumpster behind the Obama campaign's headquarters in her hometown of Albuquerque. The collection that resulted from her dumpster diving was unveiled last Saturday at the Green Inaugural Ball.
Continue reading Dumpster Diving Designer Upcycles Campaign Junk into 'Trashion'

Dumpster Diving Designer Upcycles Campaign Junk into 'Trashion' originally appeared on StyleList on Tue, 20 Jan 2009 14:00:00 EST.
