Tim Gunn's Take on Project Runway Season 4
- Tim Gunn's Take on Project Runway Season 4
Mentoring those notoriously fiery Project Runway contestants might send some fashion folk running for the hills, but not Tim Gunn. The Chief Creative Officer of Liz Claiborne listens, encourages and doles out his mantra "make it work!" as the contestantsbicker their way through yet another challenge. StyleList asked him for the scoop on Season 4.

How does Project Runway Season 4 stack up?
I have to tell you -- and I don't use the words idly or thoughtlessly -- I think it's the best and most captivating season yet. I'm thrilled with it. I'm wowed by it.
Bravo - Tim Gunn's Take on Project Runway Season 4
For me, it's all about the incredibly high execution of the work. There's so little talk now about things being poorly made -- it's really about the substance and content of the design work. It also means that the outcomes are so unpredictable, because it's really a matter of taste. Going into the runway judging, I just never knew how it was going to fall out.

Do you ever disagree with the judges?
I disagree all the time! Also, the judges disagree. With precious few exceptions, there's never absolute unanimity among them. There's a serious deliberation that can go on for 4 or 5 hours.

Is there a specific designer you think is a front runner?
I see this season of Project Runway as being like the Olympics. Someone's going to win by a hundredth of a second, and someone's going to lose by a hundredth of a second. We've always had strong designers on the show, but in terms of having this consistently high a [standard of] designer, this is new for us.

What challenge did the designers struggle with the most?
The menswear challenge. It's just not the case that if you can design womenswear well you can design menswear well. It's enough to struggle with the execution aspect, which most of the designers did in that challenge. It's a whole other matter to think about using the strength of your execution and bringing innovation so that they're not boring clothes.

Who is your Project Runway dream guest?
We've had the dream guests [Vera Wang, Catherine Malandrino and Rachel Zoe have all been guest judges]. To have this level of designer and fashion icon on the show is simply phenomenal.

Sarah Jessica Parker's Bitten line was recently featured on Project Runway. Should designers today expect to make clothes for the masses?
For a designer, it's the greatest honor in the world to democratize your work and have it reach as many people as possible. Otherwise you're just stuck in a very rarified universe.

What celebrity lines do you like?
Of course I love Bitten, but L.A.M.B. was one of the most talked about shows here in New York last September for all the right reasons. There's a fair amount of cynicism about these celebrity lines. I possess none of that cynicism. There are some where the designers are simply more involved than others, and in the case of Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwen Stefani they're very involved. They're nothing if not fashion icons, so they certainly know what they're talking about.
