5 New Uses For Beer

HuffPost Social Reading

Growing up with many German relatives, I knew from an early age that beer was very important to people. But as an adult, I learned that beer is useful for more than just drinking. From an (oddly true) sleep aid to a natural pesticide, here are my favorite 'other uses' for beer.

Wash Your Hair With Beer. Want to make your hair shinier and have more volume? Skip the hair conditioner and break out the bottle of beer! Scientifically speaking, beer is good for your hair because it has protein that strengthens your hair. Not only that, but it has a low pH and is a mild astringent to help keep your hair clean. And no, you won't smell like a frat party.

Sleep Aid. Beer can help you get a good night's sleep -- and you don't even have to drink it. When you are washing your sheets and pillowcases, pour some beer into the washer. Apparently there's something about the smell of beer that works as a sedative. I thought this was just a weird German family myth on my end, but apparently this is a common practice. Regardless, it works!

Slugicide. Save this tip for the coming spring. If your garden is under attack from slugs and snails, just pour beer into a shallow dish and leave it out overnight. For whatever reason, they are attracted to beer. Let's just say they won't be a problem come morning.

Revive Your Wooden Furniture. This is a great way to use those half full, flat bottles of beer you always wind up having after a party. It turns out that flat beer does a great job of restoring the shine to wooden furniture. Wait till the beer is absolutely flat and use just enough to moisten a towel. After you wipe down your furniture, it'll return to its original fresh color.

Metal Polisher.
When your kitchenware, faucets or other metal around the house is looking a little dull, you can polish it with beer! The amber brew is mildly acidic, which helps remove tarnish. Just pour a little beer on a cleaning rag and polish away.

One more use for beer is to pour some on a rag and wipe your plants. They will shine!!!

OMG yes that works I thought it was a lie but it does work. Oh and it keeps away bugs from your indoor plants. We have dozens of plants in my home. :( Beer really helps keep them nice.

Is there anything beer CAN'T do?
09:58 PM on 03/27/2012
I was thinking the same thing!

btw, I've tried the slug festival and it works. They get hooked though and you have to keep doing it. Otherwise they will attack if you cut them off.

Gin works well on silverware and crome also. I keep flat beer in a spray bottle and use as a setting lotion for my hair. I was a hairdresser and it works great and the smell evaporates. Good tips! Here is a tip that is invaluable! We have all had ants one time or another. Sprinkle corn meal away from the house a put a slight trail leading out of the home. They eat it and explode. I have not had an ant for 3 years. Hope this helps all of you.

Body on Tap......I would LOVE to find an old stock case or five of this shampoo!!!

My Dad worked at Mead Johnson, now Bristol Myers, and he would buy it by the case at the company store. My daughter won a science fair comparing shampoos that take the oil out of your hair and leave a great shine. I with you, wish I could find it too. Why do they discontinue what we love????
11:51 PM on 03/24/2012
Simple because after testing it was found to cause problems with your hair after prolonged use.

do you pour beer in your hair after shampoo and then rinse, or leave the beer in your hair???

Well, if duct tape can fix everything, why can't beer contribute too. LOL!!

None of these uses for beer is new. I have been using it since I was a teenager and will be 65 in a couple of months. You don't use it instead of conditioner- after you rinse the conditioner out spray some beer in your hair and style as you normally do. No, it doesn't make your hair smell like beer. Very smooth and shiny.

In the '60's I worked in a beauty salon and we always used flat beer as a setting lotion and as a rinse after a shampoo. And no our patrons did not smell like a brewery! that is only in your imagination. I still use it once in awhile if I have some left over brew and I let it go flat. That is the most important thing to remember when using it on your hair....let the beer go completely flat first!

In the days before "Hot Rollers" we used to use beer as a setting lotion with regular curlers (remember them?) and I will be 63 in a couple of months.

Did your German relatives forget to inform you that American Beer does not have the same alcohol content and other certain ingredients as Real German Bier due to American Federal Food/Alcohol Regulations? It's the very same reason I shake my head and silently laugh at Americans who have bought a Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar, even Toyotas and Honda's here in America. You will NEVER get the real item due to EPA, USDA and other American Federal Regulartaries. All cars and most food items shipped from Manufacturers from overseas have to "Dumb-Down" by American Federal Regulations. Those "European or Asian" cars built by American manufacturing plants must adhere to American standards, not European Standards. Do you know Americans cannot get REAL BLACK FOREST HAM or BLOODWURST, even...REAL GUMMY BEARS (which is a normal product in Germany) here in the USA because of the curing procedure OR certain ingredients. Put an American made or "Dumb-Down" versions of BMW, Mercedes, Honda, Toyota against their counterparts actually made in their specific countries and the American versions badly lose.

wow, this is really good to know. I was not aware that we import only second rate items. RIGHT. dil do.
