Introducing Stylelist Home

HuffPost Social Reading

No matter how old we get, we still associate fall with new beginnings. Before, it was because we couldn't help but notice the kids going off to school in our neighborhoods. But this time it's because we've started something completely new ourselves: Stylelist Home.

When we were talking about what we wanted Stylelist Home to be, the phrase "bring design down to earth" kept popping up. It might've been when we saw a gorgeous but incredibly expensive sofa on a design blog. How expensive? Try five figures. It was more than what a year of college tuition costs even at the fanciest school. And worse, it was just plain white.

When really, it was just plain not right.

And then there was the fantastic DIY about applying gaffer's tape to the floor, in an effort to a. temporarily conceal the floor and b. replicate an art installation. Again the alarm bells went off. While it was incredible eye-candy, it was another incident where we couldn't suspend reality enough to be on board with that idea. Who on earth has the time? Or the inclination? And who would want to peel it off the floor?

Yes, we'll always marvel at the prohibitively expensive. And the super inspirational. But that's not what design is about: Design is about those little things in life that make your day that much nicer. It's getting the right paint color on the wall. It's seeing a true artist, like Tord Boontje, create something beautiful to enjoy on your screen while you eat lunch at your desk. It's making the best out of what you have on hand, like this surprisingly chic runner made of...well, toilet paper rolls. It's realizing you still have a few weeks to grow something in your yard .

It's Stylelist Home, and we hope you enjoy it.
