What Fall Means for Your Fingernails

HuffPost Social Reading

I love being in New York in the fall. The change of seasons is so inspiring here and it really just makes you want nothing more than to bask in all the colors of the season. Suddenly you're finished with all the things you loved in the summer and you're ready to update your look. The trappings of fall style are so seductive after months of editing and paring down that even all your old clothes feel a little new.

I love everything about the fashion and beauty trends this fall -- it is all about being ladylike and sophisticated and I think there is nothing more flattering to a woman than a refined and tailored esthetic. Personally, I am more classic than trendy, so this is truly my season.

Summer is about letting it all out, having fun and being whimsical. But fall is about covering up, luxuriating in color and fabric and texture, and being a little more elusive. Fur is everywhere and I am really coveting all those faux fur details from collars and vests to belts and hats. And for me, finding the right accessories are a true joy of fall. My go to bag for fall is a classic, structured well-made bag and the truth is, I really don't have a lot of bags. I think that when you invest in a few really classic pieces, they can take you from day to night and you can enjoy them year after year. Trends are wonderful, but I love it when someone really owns their style and manages to look modern even while embracing some timeless elements. The key is that every now and then you create an unexpected twist with color and with accessories.

Let's face it, most of us are not going to go out and buy a new wardrobe this season. But when we indulge in just a few accessories, and some updated colors, all our favorite pieces can feel fresh again. I always say, the devil is in the details.

This is why nails are always such a buzzed-about barometer of fall trends. Everyone is excited to see the new crop of fall colors. For me, rust is the new black. And we created the most sophisticated wispy pink this season that everyone loves called Lady Like. We also took a new spin on green, which I think is actually moving out of the realm of trendy and into the realm of classic. But it all goes back to the hardware! The fall collection as a whole was inspired by the clean lines, simple elegance and classic colors of post-war era handbags, reinvented for modern times.

When we meet someone new, we notice three things first: their hands, their shoes and their bag. Never is that more true than in fall, which is why I so love this season.
