Karen spent her early career years as a freelance writer and filmmaker in the area of conservation and wildlife. Some of her projects include "With Peter Beard in Africa" for ABC Television and "Making Gorillas in the Mist" for Universal Pictures. In 1991, her film "Amazon Diary" was nominated for an Academy Award in the feature short category. In the early nineties, Karen and her partner Amy Hatkoff founded The Women's Group, a support group for women and children living in New York City shelters. From that experience came the book, "How to Save Children," a practical guide for individuals wanting to get involved in the lives of children "at risk."

Karen lives in New York City with her husband, John R. Klopp, Managing Director of Morgan Stanley Real Estate and her three children, Adam, a recent graduate of University of Virginia, Jake, a student at College of Charleston and Kell, a 9th grade student at Kent School.
