Girls Run the World
Strong, powerful, successful...those are the images that came to mind today as DKNY, Diane von Furstenberg, Victoria Beckham and Derek Lam filled their runways with clothing meant for sophisticated women who take work and play very seriously.
With an iconic NYC taxi with a DKNY sign in the background, models strode over the black and white image of the Manhattan skyline at DKNY. Black, grey, cobalt, raspberry ruled in sharply cut separates, a few killer little black dresses and a parade of beautiful and functional coats that seemed extra appealing on a day that saw windchills in the teens.
Derek Lam may have referenced the '60s but it all felt thoroughly modern with a mix of boxy cut tops over pencil skirts interspersed with narrow sheaths with contrasting collars. Peacoats are already a clear standout of the season, and these were some of the sharpest with a winter white version sticking in my head.
Diane von Furstenberg is the ultimate icon of a successful career woman, and she didn't disappoint her legion of loyal fans with a collection of her signature dresses in shades as strong as her shapes. The tomato red that wove throughout looked especially dynamite in a minimalist belted coat and a plunging halter gown paired with a vivid turquoise clutch. This is a collection that breathes new life into the old axe of "day-to-night."
And Victoria Beckham outfitted an urban army with chic military inspired dresses and coats that fit to a T. Belted wool coats with epaulets and striped sheaths were a leap forward and utterly appealing.
