SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE A look back at this summer's most delicious looks and trends
Special to Stylelist by Laurel Pinson
Just as there's always a song of the summer, invariably there's a great summer trend that spreads like wildfire until everyone's wearing some version of it. From Cameron Diaz's coral-and-purple red carpet look to Ray-Ban's Wayfarers, here are some of our favorites.
MORE ON STYLELIST
Night Brights
Colors ruled the day and the night this summer, from yellow cocktail frocks to Cameron Diaz's purple gown paired with bold coral accessories at the Metropolitan Museum's gala opening for its "Paul Poiret" exhibit.
The Original Wayfarer
Girls channeled Audrey Hepburn in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' and Marilyn Monroe, while boys evoked images of Tom Cruise in 'Risky Business' and Bob Dylan ... all courtesy of one throw-back pair of Ray-Ban shades.
Shorts
While last summer brought us the frightful short-shorts, this summer's look was more dressed up and refined, full of knee-length cuffed trouser shorts and day-to-evening looks.
One-Piece Swimsuits
In a nod to '50s and '60s-era glamour, from the Cote d'Azur to Malibu, vintage-inspired one-piece swimwear came back in a big way on the beaches this summer. Katie Holmes even made a splash by adding a chunky belt to her suit.
The Casual Suit
Brad Pitt and George Clooney were the real champions of the chic suit this summer, channeling Cary Grant in sleek gray suits and vintage shades.
Red Lips
Where bright red lips used to be a look reserved for upscale cocktail parties and late-night rendezvous, trend-setters from Dita Von Teese to Kirsten Dunst made it a part of their regular makeup routine. Keep the rest of your makeup (especially around the eyes) to a minimum, and you can wear red all day long.
Stripes
From nautical blue-and-white striped tank tops to Brittany Snow's classic black and white striped dress against a red carpet, stripes in 2007 replaced the floral prints of 2006 for a more sophisticated look.
Sequins and Metallics
From sequined mini-dresses reminiscent of En Vogue's video for "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" to metallic tanks over jeans, a little shimmer went a long way in this summer's heat. Cameron Diaz again took a great trend to new heights with this stunning golden gown.
