Martha Stewart is precise and relentless about getting results. So imagine what happens when she puts her mind to a beauty regimen. The 71-year-old author of Living the Good Long Life (Clarkson Potter) shares her disciplined approach to looking and feeling good.
1. Start early. "I'm an early riser. Today, the cat jumped in my bed a little before 4 A.M., so I got up. I put warm water on my face and then a YonKa Gommage mask all over my face and neck and chest. By the time I get out of a hot shower, which I finish with a cold rinse (and icy cold for my hair), the mask has done its work and my skin is moist."
2. Scrub wisely. "I use about five soaps, including my Orentreich Medical Group silicone soap bar, which I love, and Mario Badescu A.H.A. Botanical Body Soap. I use a loofah to really scrub my arms, thighs, and feet. Not my chest-that's tender. I also love the Clarisonic, but I don't like noise in the morning."
3. Exfoliate. "I use Scientific White Bamboo Exfoliator from Kenneth Beer MD. The more you rub, the hotter it gets. And this wonderful-oh, I love it, it comes from Iceland-Silica Mud Exfoliator from the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa. It has little beads of, probably, lava."
4. Moisturize. "Because I'm on television and I have to pose for so many photographs, I'm pretty self-critical. Some days my skin looks fabulous, and then some days, like if I've been horseback riding, my face is chapped. I use Crème de la Mer or Clé de Peau Beauté La Crème. And I'm not averse to using face creams on my body. If you're going to use it on your face, why not use it on your legs?"
5. Erase breakouts. "I rarely get blemishes now, but if perchance I'm starting to get one, I extract it with my old-fashioned fingers, unless I'm getting a facial later that week. I don't like metal on my face."
6. Consider the skin. "I haven't had facial surgery yet, but I did get Juvéderm filler after my dog bashed my lip and split it open. I tried Botox. It works for certain things, like for skin under the chin, but I don't want a taut jawline and a quizzical look."
7. Drink up. "I drink the juice of a whole lemon every single morning, and green juice. And lots of water. In New York City, I can drink tap water, but at my farm, it's not so great. So I buy the giant bottles and have it dispensed through crocks all over the property. It's not refrigerated."
8. Go light on makeup. "I can go out with just a tinted primer from Amore Pacific and look fine for like half a day. And a little Bobbi Brown bronzer, and I need eyeliner, either a powder or Estée Lauder or L'Oréal liquid eyeliner. I like foundation, too, but it has to be a cream, like Clé de Peau Refining Fluid Foundation. It's so beautiful, and you don't have to use powder. I find powder very aging."
9. And even lighter on the hair. "My hair is actually thicker now and grows faster than it did probably 25 years ago. On the weekend, I don't even like to brush it. I get screamed at by my daughter. And I don't like hair spray. That is, I don't like to ingest it, and I don't like any smell except my perfume, which is Fracas by Robert Piguet."
10. Keep your hands young. "I have a hand massage at least once a week, and it's a serious massage. Oh my gosh, yes, it's terribly important. I do not want my hands to get unnaturally bony looking or wrinkly looking. And I do yoga hand exercises. They work. My hands are very strong. Posture is also important. You can ask my friends. I'm always poking them in the back and telling them to stand up straight."
11. Do it yourself. "I've made all kinds of things. For instance, I love salt. So I use sea salt, grated lemon peel, and sesame seed oil-but not hot sesame oil. That's a very good scrub. Sesame oil is the best oil for your skin. It has no smell and dries like a powder."
12. Prepare for bedtime. "Before bed, I make sure to remove my contacts. I cleanse my face very, very well. A hot, steamy face cloth loosens any makeup, and then I wash it with silicone soap or a cleanser. I'll slather on moisturizer, and I don't forget my arms, my legs, and my hands at night."
