Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's The Row Accused of "Ripping Off" Other Designers
Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen are being accused by celebrity stylist Lysa Cooper, who recently opened up to Vogue Italia, of ripping off other designers with their line The Row. Cooper has worked with stars like Rihanna and Beyonce, and had a lot to say.
Their high-end American labels The Row and Elizabeth and James have been wildly successful, more-so than most celebrity fashion lines. Cooper gave the sisters a kind of back-handed compliment, when she said "the only [celebrity line] that's any good, and I hate to say it, are our girls, the twins. The Row. But the reason that works is because they hired designers. They 'yay' or 'nay' [the designs]. And they are the best line at ripping off other lines that I've ever seen," she said. "I mean, they've taken Rick Owens, Ann Demeulemeester. But it's good. You know, they're good at it. I don't buy it, but they're good at it."
When speaking of other celebrity fashion lines, she said that in order to warrant respect, they ought to "go to school."
Now, it's not that the Olsens have never faced criticism before: they've revealed that it wasn't easy to break into the fashion "in-crowd." When they first launched The Row, it took some time for the fashion world to take them seriously, and now their lines are being worn by some of the "red carpet elite," as we like to think of them.
