The body mass index, or BMI, is an equation that uses your height and weight to create one solid number. Using this number, dieters and those looking to lose weight are supposedly able to see whether or not they are in good health. Some fitness experts are saying otherwise -- that the body mass index is too simple of a calculation that doesn't factor in any important health facts except for your weight and height.

One of the many issues that people see with calculating BMI, is that it doesn't differentiate between fat and muscle. As we all know, muscle weighs more than fat, so wouldn't it not make sense to measure the same two as equals. If one person works out everyday and has heavy muscle mass, they may have a higher BMI than someone who has never stepped foot in a gym.

Looking at your BMI for health conformation can lead to many issues such as body dysmorphia and eating disorders. Your body mass index doesn't factor in other health questions like cholesterol, blood pressure, and other lifestyle factors.

We should all embrace our different body types, continue to exercise, and eat right. It isn't necessarily critical to look at this one single number, it is more important to be healthy and happy. So no matter if you are an exercise guru or a couch potato, your body mass index is definitely not a foolproof calculation!
