'True Blood' star talks most challenging role
Actress Rutina Wesley is best known for her role as Tara Thorton on the hit HBO series True Blood, however in her newest role, Rutina plays a returning veteran struggling with PTSD from a sexual assault that occurred while at war in the new on-stage drama One Night. "This has been by far, the most difficult and challenging character to play," Rutina told StyleList while discussing the play.
Life on television and life on the stage pose unique challenges for Rutina, however the stage has its own unique rewards. When we asked her what the audience reaction has been to her character, Rutina recalled an experience that continues to motivate her. "I remember a woman coming up to me after the show and telling me that I had told her story. She was a veteran and like so many women in the military, has kept things inside for too long. It's an incredible feeling to be able to help even one person."
One Night, written by Charles Fuller and directed by Clinton Turner Davis is currently playing in New York City until December 15th at Cherry Lane Theater. Five per cent of ticket proceeds from One Night will benefit IAVA (Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America), the first and largest non-profit, non-partisan organization for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.
