Why on earth do $500 jeans exist?

That's the question Douglas Keeve -- the director behind the iconic 1995 Isaac Mizrahi documentary, "Unzipped," as well as 2005's fashion-competition flick "Seamless" -- set out to answer in his Web-only series "Dirty Denim," which focuses on the California-born premium denim market.

In the four short films, now on the Sundance Channel's Full Frontal Fashion site, Keeve delves into the supercompetitive premium denim industry through the eyes of the designers behind Chip & Pepper, J Brand, Hudson Jeans, Serfontaine, Degaine, and Henry Duarte.

"When I started hearing stories about the denim industry, I was shocked at how much more hard core it was than the rag trade," Keeve tells StyleList.

"It's bigger, so obviously the stakes are higher. And it has to do with the special nature of denim itself. It wasn't until I did this series that I realized that jeans are expensive and difficult to make. And, as with producing any fashion collection, a lot can go wrong, but even more so with denim."

"It's a very dirty business," Pepper Foster, half of the identical-twin design duo Chip & Pepper, tells StyleList. "Everyone thinks they can get in, and it's so tough. [The film] gives you the inside view on how hard we work."

The documentary goes behind the scenes at the few washhouses outside Los Angeles that develop the washes and hand-worked styles which are then duplicated around the world, often with cheaper materials using computers and machines in place of humans, giving an inside look at the cut-throat and sometimes sleazy denim business.

It also focuses on the beginnings of the $200-plus premium denim market -- attempting to explain the craftsmanship behind those soaring price tags -- and the boom-and-bust cycle brought on by the economy.

"Denim took a major hit, and for us, it's just about regrouping," Chip Foster tells StyleList about Chip & Pepper's method of staying afloat in the recession.

"We have different divisions. We have our premium denim, and we have two brands that are lower-priced jeans, C7P and Foster, which are unbelievable and just on fire, and you can buy them at JCPenney. We've adapted."

Jeff Rudes, co-founder of J Brand, says he's focusing on collaborations with hot brands like Hussein Chalayan and Proenza Schouler to keep his company relevant, as well as sticking to J Brand's relatively affordable price point.

"When we opened, the market was flooded with high prices, but there wasn't added value in $200-plus jeans," he tells StyleList. "But I saw long-term, and there's been a correction and the competition has brought the prices down. We opened up with a price point of $140, and right now the volume is at about $158. Our business has been up, and we haven't felt the recession at all."

Which might also have something to do with the brand's clean and easy-to-wear style.

"We have a timeless product," says Rudes. "We are the black Chanel clutch bag of what we do. Or that black Armani suit that you can rely on. We are that, and that's what fashionistas aspire to."

As for Keeve, who started making fashion documentaries more than a decade before "The September Issue" and "Valentino: The Last Emperor" came around, he says more exciting projects are in the pipeline.

"We have a television show produced by Fox 21 that's set in the fashion world, created with Ryan Murphy, who is the guy behind 'Glee' and 'Nip/Tuck.' So that's in the works," he tells StyleList.

"And about 12 years ago I followed Polly Mellen around; she's one of the great doyennes of fashion. She's pretty much retired now, but the footage is amazing."

"Polly has worked with every single great photographer on earth. She was trained under Diana Vreeland, and she did everything from the Nastassja Kinski-and-the-snake photograph with Avedon to amazing Helmut Newton and David Bailey photographs," he says. "I'm working on finishing that film, which is very exciting."

And, of course, StyleList just had to ask him about the hundreds of hours of film -- we're talking vintage Kate, Naomi and Linda in their heyday! -- that Mizrahi says Keeve has left over from "Unzipped." Could it eventually make its way to a theater?

"I like to look forward and not backwards," Keeve says. "However, whenever you make a documentary, you always have five movies, not one. And it would be really nice to explore some of that other footage. So, yes, I would love to do that."

Next Wednesday, designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka will promote their new American Glamour Badgley Mischka collection that is being sold exclusively on HSN. The full range of affordable spring clothing and accessories includes blazers, silk tunics, bags, shoes, and even a blinged-out fedora as cheeky homage to Britney Spears. "This is our ode to certain celebrities that have shaved their heads, ahem, Ms. Spears," joked Mischka at press conference yesterday.

The collection - which is available for purchase now - is a follow-up to the mini version that they launched - and sold out - on the channel in November. This time around, the duo will are participating in twelve hours shilling session spread over 24-hours (two on, two off). And we fully plan on tuning in for pieces like this new version of their popular Randee shoe, which was voted "season's best" by Bloomingdales.

The HSN version will retail for less than half of the price (under $100) and will replace the teeter-totter 5 inch satin stiletto for a much more balance friendly wedge. Much of the collection follows suit, offering more wearer-friendly iterations of previous hits from their namesake line. A $4,000 crepe tuxedo jacket has been morphed into a versatile belted knit jacket with removable Art-Deco glam detailing. Elsewhere chunky bejeweled red carpet bracelets are lightened up for day wear.

Also on the top of our wish list? The handbags. The duo used all of the same manufacturers and vendors but with different materials and you can tell in details like the stitching and soft leather on their Jackie Tote (a good value at $329.90).

The battle between luxury labels and discount retailers rages on.

Earlier this week, Burberry took T.J. Maxx and Marshalls to court over alleged counterfeits. Now Fendi is going home with a courtroom injunction against Filene's Basement, reports WWD.

The two sides have been fighting tooth-and-nail in a drawn-out courtroom battle. The legal drama began in 2006 when Fendi filed suit in Manhattan federal court, accusing the discount retailer of selling fake Fendi bags even after Filene's Basement allegedly received cease-and-desist letters.

In March 2009, Filene's Basement appeared to be dragging its feet to turn over important legal documents. Later Fendi won a motion to impose fines on the retail chain for "denying the existence of certain documents."

But taking baby steps has paid off for the Karl Lagerfeld-designed label. Fendi won the important permanent injunction. Though no damages were assessed, Judge Richard Berman barred Filene's Basement from selling items bearing Fendi's logo, according to WWD.

Plus, Judge Sands was convinced that Filene's Basement was selling fake goods. He wrote that Fendi had proven that the defendant was selling items with counterfeit mark.

Filene's Basement may have lost this round, but the company that boasts its "where bargains were born" motto isn't throwing in the designer discount towel quite yet.

When we checked FilenesBasement.com today, the retailer was in the middle of a "Spring Designer Event" featuring brands such as Valentino, Alexander McQueen, Chloé, Gucci and Prada; there was no Fendi in sight.

You could say Fendi is having a trademark year. Burlington Coat Factory was ordered last month to pay a whopping $4.7 million to the Italian luxury label.

After last week's Tool Time hardware store challenge, the "Project Runway" Season 7 designers are asked to do something less nuts-and-bolts and more organic.

For some, though, it's not so natural.

The Challenge: Up on the Atlas Apartments roof, the designers meet with mentor Tim Gunn and Philip Carreon, head stylist for L'Oreal's Garnier Fructis line, for some gratuitous product promotion. Gazing out at New York City, they receive their next assignment: Create a design inspired by earth, water, fire or air. All we notice are skyscrapers.

The Stakes: ...are higher, for after this week the designers no longer have a shot at immunity if they win a challenge.

The Workroom: The loose parameters of the earthly elements challenge have some designers being literal and others theatrical: Ben Chmura, who has been assigned water, makes a shark suit. Jonathan Peters decides oxygen reminds him of laughter and thus it becomes his light-and-airy inspiration.

Anthony Williams, recalling a recent fire at his beloved pastor's home, channels that drama into a black and gray dress. Because fire is black? No, Anthony explains, "Black is not only beautiful. It's presidential." (Sounds like Michelle Obama has another up-and-coming designer to patronize.) Amy Sarabi says her dress will be a structure with something "exploding inside," so she stuffs hair extensions into the bodice.

At the L'Oreal Salon: Carreon works one-on-one with the designers on their runway models's hairstyles, but his presence is clearly intended to highlight the hairspray bottles lined up on the counter.

The Guest Judge: French designer Roland Mouret, who is famous for his moon dress. That's not exactly an earthly element, but we're glad he landed on Planet "Runway."

The Runway Show: The collection features several natural disasters and earthly wonders. With all the avant-garde looks flying by, we are most stunned by Mila Hermanovski's blah pantsuit. We think she got confused on the roof and focused on a commuter heading to her office.

Best Line by a Judge: "It looks like a cat in a baby sling," Heidi Klum says of Sarabi's hairy-chested dress.

Who's In: Peters scores his first win for a dramatic yet airy dress that had Mouret swooning: "I love it. He's a romantic, and it's very beautiful," he says, "but hey, I'm French." "Mr. Mouret, thank you. I adore you," Peters replies. See? It kind of was romantic. Seth Aaron Henderson is in the top two again along with Maya Luz.

Who's Out: Quiet Connecticut designer Chmura gets booted for his quirky shark suit, which featured sharp "tooth" buttons and a bizarre jockstrap crotch. The judges deciphered quickly that Chmura had little experience crafting suits, and with regret, sent him to clean up his work space.

The teary designer was glad his departure meant he was going home to his new husband, Bobby, but told his competitors, "I wouldn't have traded it for the world. You're brilliant designers."

Since you can only where a pistachio-hued dress so many times, translate this trend into your wardrobe with a new handbag.

Cross Body Bags:
If you don't own one yet, invest in a great cross body bag. "Cross body bags are a huge hit at Henri Bendel's right now," says the retailer's President and CEO Ed Bucciarelli. "They've been incredibly popular with our customer because they're an accessible interpretation of the military trend that we saw on the runways." It's a great anti-clutch option, too.

Alice in Wonderland:
Few movies will have as much influence on fashion this year as Tim Burton's interpretation of "Alice in Wonderland." White told StyleList to expect plenty of, "fanciful shapes and whimsical adornments." And she was right - look no further than the gallery below to see a Queen of Hearts clutch!

Put away the StairMaster and pass the scalpel.

A new survey from GoodSurgeonGuide.co.uk found that nearly eight out of 10 British women would rather lose weight through plastic surgery than dieting or exercise, the Telegraph reports.

(And they say Americans are lazy.)

Out of 1,305 Brits surveyed, women claimed they'd prefer to get slim by liposuction (34 percent), gastric bypass (26 percent) or a tummy tuck (8 percent), according to the paper.

Meanwhile, just 14 percent were reportedly willing to go on a diet, 2 percent would exercise more and 6 percent would focus on diet and exercise.

Jane Fonda is not going to like this one bit!

Men were willing to put in a bit more effort to get fit, with 52 percent reportedly opting for increased exercise over a trip to Beverly Hills.

But don't start handing out medals just yet -- 19 percent of men preferred tummy tucks and 11 percent wanted lipo.

Apparently, a gurney is preferable to a green salad -- while 63 percent of men reportedly considered plastic surgery "the lazy option," only 7 percent saw cutting calories as the best way to drop pounds.

Wimps.

"Obesity is a huge issue in the UK," Christiana Clogg, owner of The Good Surgeon Guide told the Telegraph. "The nation certainly needs to get healthier; however we also need to get fitter.

"Surgery may be a quick fix and give great results, but it doesn't always improve underlying health or psychological issues. If people are considering weight-loss surgery they could be suffering from low self-esteem -- this is when people can get blinded by low prices and technical language."

And if that doesn't scare you straight, maybe the Human Barbie will!

They may not be breaking out the mixing bowl for this hairstyle, but hip, young celebs and models are bringing back the '70s with the bowl cut.

Stars like Agyness Deyn, Estelle, Parker Posey and Christina Ricci are sporting this retro hairdo. And while it may conjure up painful childhood images for many ("Mom, who's the boy in that picture?"), you can breathe a sigh of relief that today's bowl cut is much more flattering and feminine.

A cross between a modern-day bob and the heavy bangs of last season, today's bowl style is edgier with tons of layers and texture, according to celebrity hairstylist Anh Co Tran of the Neil George Salon in Los Angeles. "This can be such a harsh cut, so it has to be very soft with a lot of movement."

While Tran said his salon has seen a rise in pixies with bangs, the bowl cut is definitely becoming popular. "I'm working to break a couple of my clients into it," he said.

But even if you didn't have one growing up, this hair trend still may not be the best look for you, according to Tran. "You have to be very confident to wear it because it frames and exposes your face. It works well for oval, square or long faces and those with smaller features," he said. "People with a large nose or a round face should stay away."

When styling a bowl cut, use a round brush, but not too much on the ends, advises Tran. Instead, he suggests using a flat iron to add slight bend or waves for variety.

Whatever you do, Tran urges that you do not attempt to cut this style yourself. "Your stylist needs to create the look by cutting into the hair and razoring it" -- two things that make this bowl cut ultra-modern.

I finally achieved my dream -- launching my beauty brand, Purple Lab, on HSN. I've been chronicling the launch of Purple Lab here on StyleList, in my Beauty bLab column. And now I'm writing about what it's like to host a home shopping show.

The details of my first appearance are here. But here's the scoop on the rest.

It's Thursday night, February 18th at 8pm. This was the big Purple Lab presentation show I was waiting for. Yes, I had already done a 9am-er.

But that was kind of a warm up. The 8pm segment was the real debut. It was where I put all of my energy as far as promotion is concerned.

Let's talk about clothes and the set for a sec.

A) I wore a purple Lanvin dress with a ruffle detail.

B) With red patent six inch heels, of course!

C) I was really short next to Shannon, the host. She's taller than me...while sitting. After I noticed this, I started propping myself up on two pillows!

There was a massive amount of behind the scenes work for this hour.

1. Sharon, Purple Lab's in-house PR guru, and I had sent out the 30 parties in a box to friends, family, and bloggers across the country so that they could host their own screening parties

2. Sharon was hosting a big screening/shopping party for 200 guests in New York at Meet in Soho, where we set up "glam stations" with makeup artists showcasing the products.

3. Christine, the blogger from Temptalia, was on set with me. And these sets are usually closed, period. But they opened it for her to get the real inside glimpse.

4. My mom and dad had 30 friends over for the festivities

5. I was also announcing the winner of the model search contest - and surprising everyone who tuned in with the fact that in addition to the grand prize winner, the lovely Jessica Harlow, who is coming to HSN with me in April, I would be taking two other winners to model on air in July!

I was getting the groove of things but there was still a lot to learn. One thing I picked up (after the fact, sadly): If I'm showing a color or product on my own skin, I should hold my hand on the table and keep it still. I didn't do this once so when the camera zoomed in, my hand was already gone!

I learned for the next time. And each show got better and better as I felt more at ease with the flow. I didn't sleep a wink that night. I was way too excited -- and not just because I had a Susan Lucci sighting on my way out.

She's my kind of HSN idol!

Chalk up another major score for Team Bulgari.

The luxury accessories brand -- which just landed Julianne Moore for its latest campaign -- has enlisted British designer Matthew Williamson to design a line of handbags for Spring/Summer 2011.

The celebrity-adored designer -- who counts Sienna Miller and Twiggy among his star fans -- is the first designer to collaborate with the fashion house, with the collection set to hit the runway during Milan Fashion Week this September.

"We chose Matthew Williamson for the great sense of color and design he brings to his work which resonates with our brand's rich history," Bulgari CEO Francesco Trapani said in a release.

The Pucci alum is also known for his exuberant prints, so our money's on a fresh crop of wild, color-saturated arm candy to dominate Spring 2011.

We're on the brightening bandwagon, that's for sure. And today's WWD reports that the treasure trove of new devices available at high-end retailers is only getting bigger.

Since the recession, many women have turned away from pricey spa treatments and services in favor of at-home skin solutions, such as Clarisonic Skin Care, Perricone MD Light Renewal and Quasar Light Therapy's Baby Quasar.

Light-therapy devices like the ones from Perricone, Quasar and Tanda claim to help treat everything from fine lines and wrinkles to acne, and women are buying it (them).

According to WWD, "Research has shown that red and infrared light can be effective in stimulating the production of collagen, diminishing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and shrinking enlarged pores, firming and toning skin, increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation, redness and clearing acne."

While these skincare gadgets don't come cheap, the Baby Quasar will cost you $449 (which would only get you about two intensive skincare treatments at a spa), WWD's sources predict "that as costs come down, there will be a model priced around $125 that will fit in the mass market."

Like the newest flat-screen TVs, if you wait six months, they inevitably become more affordable, and you won't feel the proverbial sting quite as much.

Want not, waste not.

A single cufflink was stolen during a jewelry heist -- because the thief only has one arm, the Daily Mail reports.

Czech-born Meroslva Balog pleaded guilty to two counts of theft (no, not armed robbery) after being busted for stealing a solo gold boxing glove-shaped cufflink valued at £130 (about $200) from a British jewelry store, according to the paper.

Guess what he lacks in arms he makes up for in sticky fingers.

The 28-year-old thief, who also 'fessed up to stealing a watch in a separate incident, reportedly told the jewelers he was looking for a present for his mother when he knocked over the cufflink display and made off with the trinket.

And while the fact that only one cufflink was missing may have been a major tip-off, the fact that Balog was reportedly caught on the store's video camera really did him in.

Balog was given a 12-month community sentence and 120 hours of community work and was ordered to pay the jeweler £130 compensation plus court costs, the paper reports.

There's no escaping the long arm of the law!

British actress Tilda Swinton has her orange-red hair, Scottish heritage and bizarre persona to thank for her latest endorsement.

Swinton is the eccentric muse behind Etat Libre d'Orange's ('Free State of Orange') newest scent - Like This - which features notes of tangerine, ginger, pumpkin, Moroccan neroli flower and musk and launches online this weekend, reports WWD.

The Oscar-winning actress is thrilled with the results.

"It's an idea that makes me very, very warm and happy," says Swinton.

Swinton's style has often been described as highly unique and even odd, and it has netted the 49 year-old actress several gender-bending roles during her lifetime. In 2008, she appeared at The Academy Awards with a makeup-less bare face - and took home much fashion world criticism along with her Oscar. Her stylist Jerry Stafford told W magazine, "This is skin born of the Scottish highlands, so why hide it? Why the hell put foundation on it and all this garish lipstick?"

These days, the market is flooded with celebrity-created scents, but Swinton's collaboration with Etat Libre d'Orange is reminiscent of old Hollywood and royalty days past when fragrance coutiers would create fragrances based on the inspiration of a famous face who carried a deep identity.

Audrey Hepburn's sophisticated gamine style inspired Givenchy's best-selling L'Interdit fragrance of the '50s and 60s, while Hermès concocted Kelly Calèche after the class and elegance of Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco. More recently, Commes des Garçons created a juice for socialite and fashion world icon Daphne Guinness, heiress to the Guinness beer fortune.

The fragrance ads for Like This feature heady images of Swinton in what appears to be the 'afterglow' of sexual passion. Raising eyebrows isn't new for Etat Libre d'Orange either, as they pride themselves on being a rebellious fragrance house, with names and ingredient blends that flirt with the line of subversion ('Magnificent Secretions' and 'Hotel Slut' were two of their past best-selling scents.)

One bet we'd be willing to make: this is a fragrance that will be just as memorable as the muse herself.
