My Style: I almost always go with classic over trendy. I like fabrics that feel good, and clothes that never go out of style. I have certain mainstream brands that I'm extremely loyal to, and have gotten some of my best tips from celebrities (and their stylists!) about up-and-coming designers.

My Holiday Gifts: A classic Chanel black flap bag has always been my ideal gift (I'll keep dreaming...), but I'm always fond of anything by True Religion (their pants are the next best thing to half an hour on the treadmill) and love a classic camel coat. I'm also eyeing some new riding boots (so comfortable, so stylish), a printed bikini for my next trip to Miami, and a few beauty extras (stocking stuffers, anyone?) I couldn't resist!
Thanksgiving is not exactly thought of as a fashion-friendly holiday. Eating, drinking and watching television lends itself more to a "Snuggie" than a Saint Laurent.

Still, there are ways to look chic while still being comfortable. We've gone to some of our favorite fashion insiders for a word or two of advice.

Designer -- and amazing cook to boot -- Peter Som, says, "Thanksgiving is the ultimate celebration of comfort food, so if you're eating comfort food, it makes sense to make what you wear all about comfort.

"I'd recommend knitwear -- a cozy cashmere sweater in a festive color with a touch of beading or shimmer, or a chic knit or jersey dress that has the right amount of ease (this is not the time to bust out your Alaïa or your [Herve] Leger bandage dress). Remember if you're going for comfort-chic with your clothing, make sure you balance that out with some fabulous heels or bold jewelry."

Donna Karan's solution for the holidays is to offer up her Body Perfect Shapewear as an essential layering piece. These undergarments are not unlike Spanx in their ability to suck, tuck and smooth.

"What makes it so amazing is its sleek and lightweight fabric. It doesn't cling to clothing and it doesn't bulge at the waist or leg. I swear by them." (And check out the designer's new shapewear for spring.)

Rachel Roy is predictably pragmatic chic.

"My favorite save-all piece is a cardi - it hides the tummy and hips, if you so wish. Right now, I am loving a short-sleeve cardi over long-sleeves blouses with pants or long-sleeve dresses."

And J.Crew's creative director, Jenna Lyons borrows from the boys.

"My fail-safe chow-down outfit is skinny pants with a men's shirt, tons of jewels, a boyfriend blazer and heels. No one will know if you have to unzip a bit."

With these great options, we'll definitely see you at the table for seconds! Happy Thanksgiving.

The collection, formerly known as dVb, has been renamed "Victoria Beckham Denim" and will skew more high-end, as well as "sharper and sleeker," says the British magazine, which ran pictures of the new styles.

Focusing on super-slim cigarette pants in both traditional washes and light pastel hues, along with bright leggings, a slouchy boyfriend jean, roughed up denim jackets and vests and crotch-skimming cut-offs, we expect a better response this time around. Especially if Beckham's dress line is any indication.

But recessionistas shouldn't get their hopes up -- prices will reportedly start at around $235.

Controversial photo shoots are nothing new, but this latest instance, involving a fashion story photographed at a Berlin Holocaust Memorial, is downright offensive.

European airline EasyJet is apologizing following complaints about the eight-page fashion spread in its in-flight magazine, the Daily Mail reports.

According to the paper, the budget airline has pulled all copies of its November issue of "EasyJet Traveller," in which the distasteful pictorial appears.

Run by the Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the Field of Stelae Memorial reportedly served as the backdrop for the shoot, which saw fashion models leaning against concrete slabs.

Outraged Jewish groups complained that EasyJet was "trivializing the genocidal massacre of Jews," reports the source.

The red-faced airline has offered an apology and is reportedly reviewing its relationship with publisher, INK.

"EasyJet profusely apologizes to anyone who may be offended by the inappropriate fashion photo shoot at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin featured in this month's issue of the in-flight magazine," an airline spokesman told the paper.

Also at issue is how the magazine secured permission for the shoot. According to the Foundation Memorial, only non-commercial, Holocaust-related shoots are permitted, the paper states. The organization is now reviewing the matter.

How do you recover from getting egg on your face?

If you're Kate Moss, you eat it.

The supermodel -- still reeling from last week's hullaballoo over "pro-anorexic" comments she made about being skinny to WWD -- has decided to boost her image by throwing a dinner party tonight, the Mirror reports.

(Our invite must have gotten lost in the mail.)

And it won't be just any dinner party. Moss has decided to host the festivities outside, with sources telling the paper that her master plan is to have prying paparazzi snap shots of her stuffing her face.

Insert evil laugh and rubbing of the palms.

"She is sensible about what passes her lips but she is rarely pictured eating," an anonymous pal is said to have confided to the paper.

"It's her friend Fiona's birthday and Kate has taken control of proceedings. She is insisting on an al fresco dinner -- where the paparazzi will be rife.

"Once she is seen to be tucking into her grub with gusto, Kate hopes to put an end to the criticism once and for all.

"For one day only, she will be the great human eating machine."

We'll believe it when we see it, hon. And for some, it might take more than a cocktail sausage to undo the damage caused by Moss' controversial "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" remark.

But in the meantime... let her eat cake!

From a distance, Victoria Beckham's life seems pretty darn perfect.

Hot husband. Adorable, trend-setting kids. Celeb-approved clothing line.

But all that fame and fortune doesn't mean a gal can't have buyer's remorse like the rest of us plebeians.

Which is why cameras snapped Beckham at Barneys in Beverly Hills -- gasp! -- returning a pair of Christian Louboutin heels, the Daily Mail reports.

Isn't that what assistants are for?

No word on why the Louboutins had to go. Maybe she's trying to cut costs. Maybe they didn't complement her signature Hermes handbag.

Or maybe, like Barbie, her ankles are too fat for Louboutins?

Nahhhhhhh.
The Spring 2010 runways were filled with the usual strand suspects: chignons, ponytails, afros, and braids.

But these classic styles were given a modern spin thanks to collaboration between the designers and hairstylists -- and the results have the beauty world talking about the emergence of a "new hair attitude."

Yesterday, a handful of editors gathered to hear hair maestro Guido Palau, the creative consultant for Redken, recap the major runway tress trends.

"For a long time we've seen pretty hair but now it's a bit more adventurous," said Palau.

From the touseld plaits at Alexander Wang to the extreme buns at Lanvin to the teased pigtails at Prada, spring hair is all about having fun and taking risks. But, Palau ensures us, the risks are refreshingly reasonable, and it's safe to try versions of these hair styles at home.

"Women sort of look at these styles on these young girls on the runway and think they can't pull it off - we've got to get them to try it out," he said. "It can be invigorating or confidence giving to change your hair.

"The perfection is the imperfection of these 'dos."

Palau breaks the season down into four style categories that he urges "real women" to embrace: Urban Romance (gritty and slightly disheveled); Past Perfect (playful and textured); Slick Move (wet and polished) and Extreme Measures (over-the-top).

But he admits that the standout trend for spring was this concept of an urban romance. "It's not romantic hair in the usual sense, not down and free flowing - it's more for the city woman," said Palau. "Shapes have an edge, and it's worn up in a ponytail or a knot."

For Bottega Veneta's Spring 2010 runway show, Guido created a messy ballerina bun (pictured right). The wispy strands and headband adds a youthful touch without coming across as too childlike.

To recreate this hairstyle, apply Redken Thickening Lotion 06 Body Builder to damp strands and air-dry. Pull hair up into a ponytail and secure into tiny knots with bobby pins. Finish with a chic bow or band.

And viola, you're rocking spring's hottest hair trend.

For our first annual holiday dress guide, we enlisted four of the long-legged beauties to model a plethora of party dresses. The resulting images - taken by photographer Eric Ray Davidson - showcase the beautiful gams of the dancers and fanciful garments created by the likes of Diane von Furstenberg, Tracy Reese and more.

Shot in the legendary concert hall, this year's range of flouncy cocktail frocks dovetailed nicely with the impressive art deco surroundings. There were gold and silver shimmering numbers, one-shoulder confections, and ornate pieces with detailed beading and bejeweled necklines.

Getting into the holiday spirit yet?

Pretty Ugly: Two news stories illustrate the dark side of beauty. Photo: Flickr

When you think of the cosmetics industry, glossy visions of supermodels, lipstick and mascara wands flash through your head.

But this week, we saw the flip side of pretty, a dark underbelly where the repercussions of our beauty ideals came to the forefront in two troubling stories - Red headed kids are getting beat up in California because of their hair color, and Peruvian gang members are killing people to sell their fat for cosmetic surgery.

Last Friday, at least three middle-schoolers in Calabasas, California, an affluent suburb of Los Angeles, were were kicked and hit by dozens of classmates, for nothing besides having red hair.

Officials are pointing fingers at an anti-red head Facebook group (there are many, including Ginger Beatdown, Ginger Watch '09 and Opponents of Gingervitis), which deemed the day "Kick a Ginger Day" and urged members to attack anyone with red hair and freckles. The Facebook group was inspired by a 2005 South Park episode that satirized prejudice against "gingers," after the character Cartman claims that redheads have no soul.

While red heads are not usually targeted in the US, "gingerism" is a concern in the UK, where an underlying anti-redhead prejudice stems from the historic tension between the English and the Irish and Scottish.

And even more troubling: Police in Lima, Peru have arrested members of a jungle gang suspected of murdering people and draining their fat to sell on the black market for use in cosmetic surgery.

Three suspects confessed to slaughtering five victims, but authorities say the gang may have been involved in more, and may not be the only group involved in such killings. The fat is said to be selling for $60,000 a gallon. The Chicago Sun Times reports on the gruesome process to remove the fat from the bodies.

Medical experts have expressed skepticism that there is a black market for fat, but in the Huanuco province, where the gang operates, at least 60 people have been listed as missing this year.

While these stories are not directly related to the pretty faces we see staring back at us in beauty advertisements, they both skirt the boundaries of the cosmetics industry. The Peruvian killings illustrate how far some may go to fuel the industry, and the red-head attacks focus on beauty ideals, punishing people for how they look.

So much for lipstick.
Violence in Beauty: 'Kick a Ginger Day' & Killing for Fat originally appeared on StyleList on Wed, 25 Nov 2009 14:45:00 EST.

When you think of Black Friday shopping, the first thing that comes to mind is the crazy people waiting in line at the crack of dawn for the best deals on home electronics, toys and the odd kitchen gadget.

With so much attention being given to all of these non-fashion items, does it even make sense for the fashion set to hit the mall? In a word, yes.

While you may not find the most recent, cutting-edge designer merchandise at deep discounts, there are many style items to look for and even stock up on during Black Friday madness. And with an economy that still has everyone pinching pennies, retailers are strategizing on how best to capture your dollars early, with deals on items not normally on sale at this time of year.

"True luxury items like cashmere, shearling, leather and functional outerwear will be topping the list of things to look for, because normally, these items don't go on sale until after the holiday," Tom Julian, trend expert and president of Tom Julian Group, a retail consultancy, told StyleList. "I'm intrigued by all the early sales for items not normally on promotion before Christmas."

Julian, who shops in two-to-three cities each week, has already seen some of these items. "Italian cashmere, Napa leather and down-filled jackets are already on promotion. I've seen outerwear at 30 percent off. There have been so many incentives and special insider type deals already," he said, citing "Friends and Family" promotions and "buy one, get one" sales. "Serious retailers have to prove that they have the serious deals."

Department stores at all levels including Macy's, Lord & Taylor, JCPenney and even Kohl's are offering great buys on things like cashmere sweaters. There will be great deals on outerwear in general and luxury coats in down, leather and shearling specifically. Look for special buys in fine jewelry, diamond studs in particular.

While the idea of a $9.99 George Foreman grill is pretty tempting, $100 cashmere sweaters on sale for $34.99 at Kohl's "Make Every Minute Count" sale is just a little more delicious to fashion shoppers. The chain, which opens its doors at 4 am Friday is also offering 50 to 60 percent off its Apt. 9 sportswear and its fine jewelry.

Target is offering special pricing on its exclusive items like Converse, Carlos Falchi and Anna Sheffield's limited-edition collection and has created a holiday collection, featuring dresses for $39.99 for the occasion. For early shoppers, Target is giving away a free limited-edition reusable shopping bag designed by internationally-renowned Target designer partner Marcel Wanders to the first 500 shoppers at each store.

Lord & Taylor is featuring trend-right women's pea coats for $89.99. Liz Rodbell, Lord & Taylor's general merchandise manager added, "We have terrific values planned for Black Friday and this important shopping weekend throughout the entire store. Our pricing strategy is planned to offer compelling value for both the self shopper and gift purchaser."
Continue reading Black Friday Sales for Fashionistas

Black Friday Sales for Fashionistas originally appeared on StyleList on Wed, 25 Nov 2009 14:15:00 EST. My Style: Classic, easy. Two kids make mornings tricky.
Holiday Gifts I Want: Give me beautiful basics! I like my winter work wardrobe (I'm all about the sweater dress this year!), but need clothes that look put together on the weekends. I want some flat casual boots, jeans with a forgiving mid-section and a fabulous bag that can hold everything for walks around the city with my family. And don't forget wake-up make-up; I am always happy to find that in my stocking.

The end of an era. InStyle Weddings is shuttering.

InStyle Weddings is closing. The last issue will come out Christmas day.

InStyle Weddings is the number one wedding magazine on the market, with an annual circulation of 2.6 million, Fashion Week Daily reports. The closure is apparently another casualty of the changing bridal market, hit hard by the economy, according to the site.

The quarterly, in keeping with its parent publication, focuses on celebrity weddings, sharing details on nuptials of the likes of Drew Barrymore and Marcia Cross.

While the magazine has delighted readers eager to hear exactly what kind of flowers their favorite stars chose, or who made their party favors, several stars covered in the magazine ended up separated of calling off an engagement altogether.

The New York Times called it "the curse of the InStyle Wedding" when weddings or engagements of Barrymore, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Avril Lavigne and Shannon Elizabeth went sour.

InStyle Weddings is the third bridal title to close in the past few weeks, with Elegant Bride and Modern Bride, both Conde Nast publications, folding last month.

The magazine launched back around the turn of the century, right around the time of the dot-com boom (and bust). Fueled by the Internet, America's celebrity culture was hot.

But the wedding industry has evolved. With dozens of beautiful blogs chronicling real people's weddings and elaborate guides to personal DIY touches (we love snippetandink.com and oncewed.com), prospective brides have numerous places to find ideas, and many couples on which to model their ceremonies.

And even though the average cost of a wedding is now between $21,000 and $24,000, according to Richard Markel, president of the Association for Wedding Professionals, as quoted on SmartMoney.com, most brides in today's economy are looking for realistic ways to save money when planning their big day.

That said, we'll miss InStyle Weddings, where every wedding was perfect and planned down to the smallest detail. And who doesn't want to see how beauties like Christina Hendricks celebrate their nuptials? Here's hoping they continue to cover celeb weddings in their main monthly title.
InStyle Weddings Is Closing originally appeared on StyleList on Wed, 25 Nov 2009 12:00:00 EST. We are getting ready for our "holiday" family picture so I was wondering if a red wool blazer is considered in or out?

A: With something as precious as a family photo, you want to look classic and timeless. A red blazer is a perfect - and festive! - way to add a splash of color to your ensemble.

After four years, you may want to make sure that the color of the blazer is still in tact and not too faded. If it is, you could always add some sparkle in the form of brooches. Forever 21 has a great one that is under $6! Buy two or three of varying sizes and arrange them in a cluster on your lapel.
Last night's most coveted ticket was no doubt an invite to the Obamas' first state dinner.

As the hostess of the annual affair, Michelle Obama stunned in a sterling silver sequin abstract floral, one-of-a-kind nude gown by Naeem Khan -- the designer created the dress especially for the India-themed event. (The honored guests of the evening were Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur.)

While Mrs. O accessorized elegantly with a color-coordinated wrap, stack of silver and gold churis (traditional Indian bangles) and dramatic shoulder-dusting earrings with fleur-de-lis detail and gold and purple stones, it was the strapless silhouette paired with her swept-back hair that really caught our eye.

MO's state dinner ensemble has fashion insiders applauding her social know-how.

"The nice thing about it is the Jackie Kennedy sort of appropriateness. Most people wouldn't know one way or another about Naeem's background, but if one sentence gets mentioned to the prime minister, then her subtleness would pay off," Hal Rubenstein, fashion director at InStyle magazine, told Associated Press.

As for President Obama, who has had a snafu or two with fashion (er, mom jeans anyone?), Rubenstein approves. "I often feel Obama's suits are too big on him, but I think he got a new tux."

Michelle Obama's highly scrutinized sartorial choices have clearly influenced the fashion industry, too. One of her favorite designers recently took home the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize.

Michelle Obama Stuns in Strapless Gown at State Dinner originally appeared on StyleList on Wed, 25 Nov 2009 11:42:00 EST.
If you don't want to commit to a totally different holiday look, you can change your regular makeup by just dusting sheer metallic shimmer over your eyeshadow. "Gold, silver and copper look amazing over all shadow colors!" says Schlip. Bobbi Brown's holiday metallics have a reflective pearl finish that brightens every eye.

If you love to pull out the holiday red this time of year, there's an updated way to wear it. Pair a sheer and toasty brown shadow with lots of volumizing black mascara and balance with a soft sheen warm blush, advises Celebrity Makeup Artist Yolonda Frederick. The red hue of the moment? A deep berry red like MAC's Blood Red Lipstick.

With all the shimmer products we play with during the holiday, it's important to keep the t-zone matte to prevent greasy-looking pictures. Estee Lauder's stunning compact doubles as a conversation-starting accessory you can pull from your clutch for touch-ups. The pretty powder comes in translucent - an airy mattifying shade that is perfect for all skin tones.

"Purple is the power color of the moment, thanks to First Lady Michelle Obama's constant use of it - it's the new red!" says New York Manicurist Sheril Bailey. Lancome's Untamed Plum polish is a deep, sexy version of the royal shade; wear it on short, neatly filed nails for a surprisingly neutral look that will compliment everything from party dresses to your favorite denim.

The easiest way to go from day to night for a holiday soiree? It's all in the eyeliner. "Smoke out your eyeliner by smudging it with an eyeshadow brush," says Celeb Makeup Artist Joanna Schlip. Maybelline's new Line Express creates intense color with a creamy formula perfect for smudging. When you're in a pinch, you can use the sponge smudger on the other end to blend; for super sultry results, use your eyeshadow brush.

For pretty and pouty lips, try this celeb-loved trick: "Add a layer of lipgloss one shade lighter than your lipcolor for instant glam," says Schlip. The lighter layer adds dimension to your lips, making them look fuller and more plump. Hard Candy's new Plexi Glosses come in a huge variety of shades, and are a steal at just $5 a pop.
But there's more to making the most of the day than shopping prep. The right outfit can stop tempers and temperatures from boiling over amid the frenzy. After all, if you feel frazzled, fat and frumpy while browsing for gifts, it's unlikely inspiration will strike. And if you need to personally roadtest whether that cute top will fit your sister (or even take a break to treat yourself), it's crucial to be ready. So we tapped fashion and beauty guru Mary-Alice Stephenson, a top celebrity stylist whom even Oprah trusts, and "Today Show" regular Jill Martin, author of "Fashion for Dummies" to provide some stress-proof styling tips for braving the big day.

What to Wear on Black Friday

PART 1: UNDERWEAR
First of all, when it comes to lingerie, stay simple. "I don't care what you're wearing, you need Spanx as undergarments. I'm not a fan of any tummy. You should always wear those when you're shopping," Martin chides.
Stephenson agrees. "Stick a pair of Spanx in your bag, which will hold you in if you're trying on that LBD." She says coverage is as crucial as clean lines, and recommends microfiber tanks, thongs and boy shorts from Hanro.
"Sometimes, you don't always get a dressing room on Black Friday," she continues. "In my shopping experience, it's a day when women have no shame. If you need to get naked in front of the world, at least you'll look good."

Courtesy of Spanx

PART 2: PANTS

Stephenson says when it comes to legs, stay skin-tight. For the brave or the buff, she'd suggest leggings.

"But I love my Loft skinny denim which has got spandex in it which sculpts the body. This season, everyone is buying boots and it makes it easy to try them on - you don't have all that fabric from a boot cut. You never need to take a pair of socks. And you can even pop a dress or tunic over - it's not bulky denim."
"There are so many embellished flats nowadays, at all price points," says Stephenson. "It looks festive and is easy for you to slip in and out of."
Heels are fine too but keep them low and kittenish: Cole Haan with its Nike technology, BCBGeneration and Jessica Simpson's collection.

Stephenson is also fond of Converse sneakers, a classic that's been revived yet again. She's increasingly spotting customized pairs, with sequins or brooches like a sporty version of that embellished flat.

"Just avoid shoes that take a lot of time to take off, and stay away from Uggs and clogs - I understand why women love them, but they're ugly," she says.

PART 4: JEWELRY

Keep jewelry to a minimum. Chunky cocktail rings will snag on sweaters as you browse, and chokers catch on necklines of anything you try on. If you're loathe to nix sparkle entirely, keep it to outerwear: Stephenson loves the embellished sweater coats from Vera Wang's line for Kohls.

PART 5: HAIR AND MAKE UP

The same rule's true for hair and make up as jewelry. Think fresh faced and simple, more Taylor Swift than Dolly Parton.

"You don't want to leave your face over every single garment you try on," says Stephenson. Pop hair in a pony tail and stick with nothing more than lip gloss.

INF

PART 6: OUTERWEAR

The key when you're running in and out of stores, or from the mall to the car, is to plan for extremes of hot and cold: opt for layered outerwear, like a cashmere cardigan.

"Vests are fantastic, too and we're having this huge sleeveless moment," raves Stephenson. "And layering a coat with a vest means you don't have the bulkiness."

Actress Kristen Bell steps out in a multi-layered outfit while readying for some retail therapy.

INF

PART 7: BAGS

"You have to stay as hands free as possible," Martin says, before confiding her own practical strategy. "I wear a pack around my waist that's black and I bought for $5. In it, I have a credit card and $100 cash in a rubber band, my shopping list, my Blackberry and some lip balm. That's it."

Stephenson agrees that practical purses for Black Friday should be hands-free. "Like messenger bags. And this season is all about the rectangular shape in bags, shoulder bags like hobos. And even very ladylike bags with two handles have a shoulder strap nowadays."

She'd splurge on the roomy quilted Marc Jacobs Stam bag, named after supermodel Jessica.

At left, Rihanna sports a Louis Vuitton fanny pack while out and about in London.

INF

PART 8: MORE BAGS

The fanny pack-equipped Martin has a canny tip when it comes to shopping bags that she calls creative planning.

"Go first to a store that has a great big shopping bag, like Intermix which has a giant shopping bag, because it sells boots," she says. "Then I go there and buy a necklace or a shirt, then ask 'Can I have a big shopping bag, I have a lot of stuff to get today?'"

That way, you can simply stuff future purchases into a single carry-all.

PacificCoastNews.com

PART 9: THE MANTRA

Both Stephenson and Martin agree there's one overarching rule for Black Friday wardrobes: don't be tempted to dress down.

"You should look like you'd want to look if you were to run into an ex-boyfriend from high school," Martin says.

She speaks from experience. Martin once broke her own commandments and popped to the mall wearing sweatpants.

"My ex-boyfriend was there with his new girlfriend. I wanted to shoot myself. Everyone's shopping on that day."

At Anastasia Soare's intimate Beverly Hills brow salon, the walls are adorned with "thank you" autographed photos of the Hollywood elite; you can find everyone from Oprah to Madonna to Victoria Beckham gazing back at you with perfectly plucked brows.

But according to this brow maven to the stars, the surprising number one mistake women make with their brows is over-tweezing to copy the celebs.

"Women try to do all kinds of things with their brows, like forcing a high arch to lift the face. No, no! Your brows frame your features. If you over-tweeze and show too much brow bone, all of your features will look out of proportion," says Anastasia - who is sporting her trademark blunt bang long layered cut, and is dressed in an understated yet polished black top, knee length skirt and patent leather stiletto boots.

"Don't listen to anyone who says there's a trendy shape right now. Always follow your own brow bone and shape. And watch the brow opposite the hand you pluck with, because you'll naturally over-tweeze it, since reaching across your face makes you pluck in an upward motion," adds Anastasia.

Not only is Anastasia a hit with Hollywood; you can find her brow studios and products in select Sephora's and Nordstrom's. And business continues to boom - this December, Anastasia will open her first full-service salon in Brentwood, CA .

So what is Anastasia's favorite brow look? "I admit it - I love the fuller, more natural Sophia Loren brow.
