How To Be Organized: Medicine Cabinet Remedies

HuffPost Social Reading

A medicine cabinet can quickly become a dump zone for everything from old medications, empty bottles and long-abandoned cosmetics. And when a dump zone happens, an avalanche is really just around the corner. And by "avalanche" we mean "pounds of junk cascading from the cabinet at the most inopportune time." We don't have to tell you to toss the old stuff -- but if you need some further organizing tips, look no further than these simple tips.

Divide shelves. Place acrylic drawer organizers on medicine cabinet shelves to keep like items, such as nail care supplies, together. Acrylic risers provide extra surface space and put unused vertical space between shelves to work.

Improvise containers. Look to the kitchen or other rooms for creative ones. A wide ceramic mug or canning jar can serve as a container for cotton balls, while a creamer can hold cotton swabs.

Find hidden space. Hang a magnetic strip on the inside of the medicine cabinet door (between shelves), and hang metal objects such as tweezers, nail clippers, and spare shaving blades. Magnetic strips with adhesive back are available at hardware stores.

Use hooks. Add magnetized hooks to hold ponytail holders or scissors. A magnetic notepad holder (usually found on a fridge) can hold brushes and combs or toothbrushes and toothpaste.

Not trying to take them on a plane will also ensure that you don't lose them.

This article forgot one big reason I can never find such things as my soap, hairbrush, etc. Actually, there are two reasons why in our house-they're our two kids! It drives me nuts how none of my stuff is sacred-they have their own soap and shampoo, their own toothpaste, their own hairbrushes, etc. but they are ALWAYS swiping mine!!!! It drives me absolutely nuts. I've explained to them repeatedly how they should respect other people's property, how it's unsanitary to use other people's personal care items, and how it makes me crazy when I can't find my things because they don't put them back, but it falls on deaf ears. I guess I should padlock my dressing table drawers and bathroom cabinet-it's the only way to keep them out!

oh my, there is a difference between being organized and being retentive. if you don't use it throw it out and you don't have to organize it. Everyone I know is a bathroom horder -- they bought pomade they never use, but because it cost 30. they don't want to throw it out.
