How To Be Organized: The Best Way To Store Towels

HuffPost Social Reading

Rolled towels take up less space than folded ones, and a pyramid of fresh towels make you feel like you're at the spa. Fold towels in half lengthwise and then roll them up. Determine where you have extra space in the bathroom and store towels accordingly. Rolled towels can be stored in a basket on the floor or in a pyramid on a shelf. Repurpose a window box, which takes up very little space and, depending on the size, can store rolled bath towels or hand towels.

I fold mine and place them in the linen closet. The trick to towels is they way they are folded and to be very neat about it, otherwise, they will take up space. I've tried rolling them and it just doesn't work as well. I don't have room in my bathroom for a basket either.

The simple fact that you really can't stack rolled towels will tell you that you can't store as many. And, if they can't be backed tight they start to unroll. My linen closest isn't the most perfect to look at, but I can get lots and lots of folded flat towels in there.

I have to disagree with this article. I've tried both methods...and I've found that rolled up towels take more room in my linen closet than simply folding them flat and stacking them.

I keep about half a dozen hand towels rolled up, and in a basket in the bathroom. All other towels are stored follded flat in a linen closet. I couldn't get anywhere near the same number of rolled towels in the same space.

In our house, each person has a rack to hang their bath towel. Towels dry faster when hung. Wash cloths are only used once and then put in the laundry. We put out a hand towel daily on the bathroom counter.....it's rarely used since hand sanitizer is, well, more sanitary.

I see this tip all the time. One day I decided to test it out. Which way can I actually store more towels in the same space? Folded flat won hands down. In the space that I put 6 rolled towels (3 then 2 then 1) I was able to stack the same 6 towels, plus 2 more!
So hogwash on rolling them! And besides, when they are rolled, it's just like anything else round. They tend to roll away from each other unless you have something on both sides to brace them.

"Rolled towels take up less space than folded ones" Not sure that is geometrically possible? I await replies :o)

BTW If you really want to store towels so they take up the least space, get some large zip-lock style storage bags, 2 gallon or larger. Fold the towels so they fit inside. With the towels inside, put the bag on a hard surface like a wooden chair and sit on the bag. While sitting on the bag, slide the closure to seal it. Poor man's vacuum storage bag.

"Rolled towels take up less space than folded ones"

I hear this all the time. If you are talking about volume (cubic feet), this is not true. If you are talking about footprint per towel (square feet), then it is true. For example: I take 10 standard 56x30 bath towels. I fold each towel twice to approximately 28x15. I stack all the towels up and measure the height. Volume is a simple LxWxH. Then, I take unfold the towels, do as the article says folding in half lengthwise to 56x15 and roll. I stack all the rolled towels in a 28x15 area and measure the height. Again using the LxWxH I get the volume. The volume of the rolled towels will be greater than the volume of the folded towels.

The most efficient way to pack things if the are rectangular and going into a rectangular space is to fold them into rectangles. This woman should have taken geometry.

Exactly! See my post above.

I'm skeptical on them taking up less space since they are round they leave voids between them that folded towels wouldn't. They do look better rolled though.

We roll out towels because they are almost too big to fold. One of the few luxuries we allow ourselves in huge, fluffy, Turkish towels. Our last group was about 38 Euro each.

Rolling towels is so easy--its a good simple task for small children to master. And they think its fun.
