What 'Not' To Put In A Dishwasher

HuffPost Social Reading

While most dishes, glasses, and kitchen tools are dishwasher-safe, over time the effects of heat, detergent, and water pressure can do their damage. Hand wash anything you cherish or want to preserve. The following items are generally better off with hand washing:

Stainless Steel. Though dishwasher-safe, stainless pots and pans will last longer with hand washing.

Cast Iron. Never put in the dishwasher, as detergent will strip away the seasoned surface and cause rust.

Aluminum. Hand wash all aluminum unless it's designated dishwasher-safe.

Wood. The heat and steam of a dishwasher's dry cycle can warp wood, so take care to hand wash wood utensils, cutting boards, and serving dishes, including wood-handled items.

Antique or Hand-Painted China. While some new fine china is dishwasher-safe, most antique dishes can be damaged in the dishwasher.

Plastic. High heat can warp plastic. It a plastic item isn't guaranteed dishwasher-safe by the manufacturer, hand wash it. If you do put plastic in the dishwasher, place it in the upper tray.

Knives. Though many knives are generally safe to put in the dishwasher, most manufacturers recommend hand washing them with warm water and a little detergent, rinsing and then drying immediately with a towel. Also, be aware that knocking against other items in the silverware baskets can dull the blade, so you may have to resharpen more often.

Salt, pepper, and butter fish filets then wrap it up really, really well in aluminum foil, Pop it in the dishwasher and do a regular wash complete with the dry cycle. Voila. Imagine it works for about anything, corn on the cob, veggies, whatever. I know you think I am shttin ya, but just try it, you can thank me latah.

Oh, by the way, you can put your computer keyboard in the dishwasher and it will come out spotless. You just have to remember to take it out before the dry cycle. The Denver public library does this.

A lot of those things listed I have put in the dishwasher. Not a clue why I shouldn't. Plastic, top rack, of course. I don't have cast iron but that's common sense. Knives, all the time.
But they didn't list sterling silver and that should have been number one! I learned the hard way to not do that! My sis bought me a beautiful set of sterling silver salad forks. (You know, the big serving ones) They even said not to but brilliant me ( who thinks I know so much) put them in anyway and completely ruined them. No fixing that problem either.
So NO STERLING SILVER, ever!

When I was a teenager, I learned to not put regular dishwashing soap in the DW. We had the cleanest kitchen floors in the neighborhood after we finally got all the suds off of the floor. It would not have been so bad but it was quite a while before it was noticed.

Every single person has learned this one and usually the hard way, I learned it when I tried that and the water overflowed down into the land lady's apartment! Dam!!! Daughter in law did it at my house and my floor was so clean. I think everyone has tried this at least once.

I have no idea what my housekeeper puts in it or doesn't .

Really, and use the dishwasher for??? I put it all in; to include wooden spoons stainless and plastic. Otherwise I would be doing more of the washing. Dishwashers do not ruin plastic if you place it correctly. I simply do not want to wash these items.

If you make sure to remove all the hair from them a dish washer makes a great cleaner for SOLID hair brushes. Especially if the little ones end up catching lice and you need to clean their hair care items. Just be careful, certain non solid hair brushes CAN melt as well as the brushes with the Gel handles.

Just make sure, as I said, you remove ALL the hair from them or you will clog the filter.

Tooth brushes don't fare well. You end up with a twistie handle and melted bristles.

they forgot sex toys...don't do well in the dishwasher either!!

Some of them do... :)

I am amazed that BRASS is NOT listed. Dishwasher detergent will scour brass and leave it with tiny groves which dull the surface and are next to impossible to remove.

Voice of experience - don't repeat my mistake.

I put my husband's hubcaps in the dishwasher, they turn out nice everytime. I also put the BBQ grid in my self cleaning oven, killing two bird's with one stone(cleaning).

What's left ? All that would turn the Dishwasher into a kitchen ornament. I agree that for wood handled knives, that's the end of the road, and for stainless steel, some of it discolors, loses its shine fo0rever. But if a Dishwasher has multiple settings from really hot to relatively cool, then I think most anything can be put into it, except wine goblets that always break. Over time, even the most expensive knife handles will get dull, but a little buffing will bring them back. However if we did what the article suggests, we might as well hand wash everything and retire the Dishwasher.
