Remembering 9/11

HuffPost Social Reading

There is no easy or "right" way to navigate the 10th anniversary of 9/11. There isn't a proper way for the country to do it. As recent debate has indicated, there isn't a perfect way for the City to do it. And there isn't an exact formula that the fashion industry can follow to ensure that this tragic anniversary is commemorated appropriately. Still, as a proud New Yorker, I recognize how important it is that the Lincoln Center Campus collectively contribute to the memorializing of September 11th. The fashion community has a moment of silence to mark the time that American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 hit the Twin Towers. Additionally, many designers -- some publicly and many more anonymously -- contribute to the 9/11 Fund.

Come Sunday, whether you're holding a Tent credential or not, you should be able to perceive the marking of 9/11 on Campus, and to that end Lincoln Center is hosting several memorial events in a variety of its constituent organizations.

On September 10th, The New York Philharmonic played the uplifting and solemn Concert for New York for the Tenth Anniversary of 9/11 -- In Remembrance and Renewal.

On September 11th, at the David Rubenstein Atrium, tourists, neighbors and all members of the Lincoln Center community are invited to gather together to watch coverage of the 9/11 Memorial Services broadcast on the Atrium's Media Wall. Josie Robertson Plaza will be graced by The Buglisi Dance Theater, as it presents A Table of Silence Project, a public tribute in which over 100 dancers will convey their prayer for peace. And in the afternoon, the work of composers Karl Jenkins and Rene Clausen will be featured in A Concert of Commemoration, in Avery Fisher Hall, which will be performed by the Distinguished Concerts Orchestra and Singers International.

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts is a destination and a point of pride for New Yorkers and citizens across the globe, both during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, and outside of it. On 9/11, our industry's metaphoric show goes on because it needs to, but across our community and across New York, we use art as a medium to remember the lives of the people lost on 9/11. And I consider, amidst the creativity of so many, how that day touched my own life as well.
