My love affair with makeup started at a young age. I remember sitting, mesmerized, watching as my mother applied her makeup before a night out. Her white eye shadow and pale lips were the epitome of glamour to me. By the time I was 10, I was doing makeup on everyone, even the dog. It wasn’t until my 18th birthday after a trip to the makeup department at Marshall Field’s that I realized I wanted to become a makeup artist.
As a makeup artist, my goal has always been to empower women to be who they are and celebrate their natural beauty. More than 20 years later, my beauty philosophy remains the same as when I started my brand in 1991 -- I believe all women are pretty, and with the right tools, makeup and knowledge, feel more confident and pretty powerful.

As a woman, I understand what it takes to feel and look good. It takes an incredible amount of hard work (as does everything that’s worth doing) -- you have to eat right, exercise regularly, learn how to apply your own makeup, and get dressed even on the days you’re not feeling your best. But first and foremost, feeling good requires an upbeat attitude, confidence, and a great sense of humor. To me, that’s what Pretty Powerful is all about—and over the next few days, I will share with you various aspects of my life that keep me feeling pretty powerful.
