10 Beauty Secrets You Can't Live Without
- 10 Beauty Secrets You Can't Live Without
By Joanna Douglas
The key to looking gorgeous isn't having your own personal hair and makeup artists -- it's stealing their secrets! StyleList went backstage at the Bryant Park tents during New York Fashion Week and picked up loads of insider tips for beautifying at home. Lucky for you, we're willing to share.

# 1: Ditch the Styling Tools
When it comes to making waves (in your hair, of course), braids, twists and a light hairspray can be superior to irons or curlers. At Erin Fetherston, hair stylists braided sections of hair, spritzed them withhairspray, set for 10 minutes and then unwound them for an earthy effect.

# 2: Mix and Match
Nars' James Boemer was asked to create a natural, ethereal look for the Erin Fetherston show ala Olivia Hussey as Juliet (she starred in the classic film, not the remake with Claire and Leo!). To create cheeks "like a polished apple," he combined Rosebud Salve balm with a smudge of Nars Flamenco sheer lipstick. For eyes, Boemer cut false lashes into clusters before gluing them in -- "it makes your eyes look more open." Rosebud Salve, $4, www.rosebudsalve.com.

# 3: Remove Stubborn Polish -- and Multitask!
Backstage at Abaete, many models had acrylics and tough-to-remove polishes on their nails from previous shows. The pros at CND (Creative Nail Design) soaked cotton pads in remover, placed themover the nails, covered with foil and sent the models on their way. Five minutes later the lacquer was gone!

#4: Banish Baby Hairs
You know those little curly hairline locks that J.Lo is always complaining about? Redken's David Cruz tames them by pulling the hair back, then using a clean toothbrush to slick back baby hairs around your hairline.Genius!

#5: Try Brown for a Natural Look
At Matthew Williamson, MAC stylist Charlotte Tilbury advised, "For a natural look, apply dark brown mascara instead of black, only on the top lashes." She kept model Coco Rocha fresh-faced by using tawny pink cream blush and shadow, applied with fingers only.

#6: Get Glam Eye Color That Stay Put
For powerful, long-lasting eye color, MAC stylist Polly Osmond suggests using a liner like MAC Fluidline in place of a shadow. Daring enough to try loose glitter? Osmond uses eyelash glue to adhere it to lids (don't worry -- it comes off easily with scotch tape). MAC Fluidline, $15, www.maccosmetics.com .

#7: Make Your Curls Stay Put
Nothing is more frustrating than curling your hair in the morning, then having it fall flat before you even make it to work. To increase staying power, steal this trick from the Tuleh show: Redken stylists first constructed the perfect curls, then twisted hair into a simple bun. Seconds before showtime, they let hair down and voila -- curls just as they made them.

#8: Dewy, Not Dry, Eyes
Makeup guru Polly Osmond for MAC says, "If your eyeshadow is looking too matte, use face gloss on the lid to give eyes a pop." This trick worked wonders backstage at Twinkle. Over at Sass and Bide, a shimmery liquidshadow was used on lids to create depth. Try it yourself with Ramy Face Gloss, $19, www.amazon.com .

#9: The Secret to Quick Curls
Kevin Ryan for R Session Tools cut styling time in half by using a double barrel curling iron at Milly. It seems obvious, but you didn't think of it, now did you? Rusk CTC Dual Barrel Curling Iron, $100, www.stylesource.com .
