STYLE GUIDE: THE MOST SLIMMING JACKETS
- STYLE GUIDE: THE MOST SLIMMING JACKETS
By Emily Neill
The greatest thing about a jacket (or a blazer) is its ability to perfect the proportion of your silhouette. Got small shoulders? A jacket can instantly broaden them. Heavy in the middle? A jacket can contour your waistline and cinch you in just the right place. But as always, there's a dark side. The wrong jacket can make you look way bigger than you are. Following is a pictorial guide to jacket dos and don'ts. - STYLE GUIDE: THE MOST SLIMMING JACKETS
Lily is sporting the wrong jacket, but why is it wrong? First, the length is meant to cover her rear and tummy, but it actually breaks up her silhouette at one of its widest parts, making her look heavier and shorter than she is. The overall effect -- this jacket is wearing her.

This cropped jacket is perfect on Lily. Tailoring throughout the midsection sculpts her waist and accents her curves tastefully, rather than burying her in too much fabric. The cropped length falls at the top of her hips and flares slightly out over them, highlighting an hourglass figure.

Yvette uses this soft suede jacket with fringe as a cover-up, but because it cuts at her widest part, it has the opposite effect. And the rounded shoulder doesn't do her curvy figure any favors -- it increases the overall perception of roundness. This shapeless jacket turns her top half into a rectangle of color.

Many women who are sensitive about their torsos wear jackets for coverage. As long as you pick one that is made of a fabric thick enough to do some sculpting, it's actually better to show more of your figure. Yvette looks slimmer in this jacket, which hugs her shape more closely. The vertical lines also elongate her torso.

Karen was unsure what type of jacket to wear and opted for this rather haphazard plaid number. The shoulder seams are falling off her shoulders, creating an appearance of roundness. Another problem is that this jacket falls close to Karen's slightly wide natural waist, and the length is too short, leaving her square hips hanging out to dry.

This longer jacket is a great option for Karen. It gives her the coverage she wants, but paired with a figure-hugging shirt, it actually makes her look slimmer. A wide-legged dark denim jean with heels smoothes out hips and elongates her legs to carry the length of the jacket.

Amy has a nice hourglass figure, but this jacket certainly doesn't do it any favors! It has a square cut through the torso and is too broad in the shoulders. The result? Amy looks rectangular rather than curvy.

Check out this more fitted and cropped jacket on Amy, which reveals her nice waist, cinches at her narrowest part (the empire) for even more slimming appeal, and flares ever so slightly right at the top of her hip. She's not overwhelmed in fabric, but still nicely covered.

Supriya, whose figure is slim, should use the structure a jacket provides to give her a bit more weight. This wool crepe hangs on her like a wet towel (mind you, this is the same jacket we just saw looking great on Amy!). Since Supriya is short-waisted, she has to be careful about jacket length and stance (where the top button hits). This one is too long and its stance is too low on her bust.
