Roy Teeluck's Fresh New Hairstyle

THE ROY TEELUCK TREATMENT: 'Shear Genius''s Expert Stylist Makes One Woman Over & Shares Wash-and-Go Tips

Starting Over

A breakup and an outgrown haircut had Claire Grant, 26 ready to let expert stylist Roy Teeluck have his way with her hair -- "Just don't make me look like a soccer mom," she stipulated. Roy decided to give Claire, a Lifestyle Editor living in New York City, a sassy twist on the bob. Bobs are perfect for the woman-on-the-go, Roy says, because they are easy to style lots of different ways.

Seeing Red

Roy's first order of business was freshening Claire's color. "She has this great reddish tone which I wanted to emphasize to bring out her eye color," he explained. After touching up Claire's roots with L'Oreal's demi-permanent Diacolor Gelee, Roy's colorist applied the glaze to the length of Claire's hair.

      Setting the Tone

To set the color, Claire sat under an orbit dryer which literally circled her head to evenly distribute heat, for 15 minutes. Roy's shampoo assistant then massaged the glaze through Claire's hair from root to tip before shampooing it out with L'Oreal's Vitamino Color.

          Hot Product

L'Oreal's demi-permanent Diacolor Gelee adds a subtle but noticeable change of shade that washes out after about 12 to 16 shampoos. L'Oreal's Vitamino Color shampoo protects the vibrancy of color-treated hair.

            Making the Cut

Before Roy began to cut Claire's hair, he arranged it the way he wanted the style to frame her face. "It allows me to cut the hair faster and it gives me a structure so I can see [the style] unfold as I'm cutting," he explained. To make the first cut, he had her stand up so he could take her size and height into account when deciding on the right length.

              A Cut Above

Roy then cut a "guideline," before layering the lengths underneath. He explained that this technique would give Claire's cut much more volume.

                  Cutting It Close

Roy married the existing layers of Claire's old hair cut into a sharp-edged angular bob.

                      Light as a Feather

Roy then used a feather razor to texturize Claire's hair. "The fact that we cut her hair isn't going to make it any lighter," Roy explained, "[With the feather razor, we cut] her hair in a way to make it lighter and give it volume."

                          Product Placement

Before drying Claire's hair, Roy smoothed her hair with a small squeeze of Nexxus Sleek Style and sprayed Nexxus Root Exxtend to areas of the hair that were particularly flat before massaging it throughout her hair. Applying the product to damp hair makes it easier to style when it's dry.

                              Brushing Up

Using a round brush, Roy blowdried Claire's hair into soft, shaggy waves.

                                  Finishing Touches

To complete her transformation, makeup artist Christian Zamora evened out Claire's skin tone using a little concealer under her eyes, around her nose and around the corners of her mouth. He then massaged "a little pop of color" on her cheeks. He finished up with a light eye shadow and a mix of colored glosses on her lips.

                                      Perfectly Claire

"I love my hair!" Claire gushed at her reflection, as salon clientele admired her new look with smiles. Their admiring stares were just the preview as she slipped on her shades and skipped out into the Manhattan day, her sassy new bob bouncing and shining in the sun.
