DO IT UP!

'DO IT UP! Upgrade from ponytail to updo with these easy (and quick) to recreate styles

Special to Stylelist By Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond

Whether we're trying to keep strands off a sweaty neck or skip the time-suck of a blow out, flat iron or hot curl, ponytails and buns have always been our fave get-up-and-go style. Hairstylist Nicola Augustine showed us it's just as easy to swap the scrunchie for a set of pins -- and a more elegant style.

MORE SUMMER STYLE FROM HEAD TO OH!

For an alternative to the standard ponytail, Augustine suggests creating a single french braid, like this one she did on Elyse, 19. Then...

...pin the braid into a loose knot, sweep the braid to the side, or pin it up and under. If you want to replicate the Grecian goddess style Sienna Miller wore to the 2007 Golden Globes, you can also wrap the braid around your head and wear it like a laurel. (The braid is a great solution for overgrown roots too.)

If your hair's really curly, play up your Shirly Temples by brushing them up and to the side...

...then pin the piled curls at the crown of your head.

That's it! If you have more time, Augustine suggests defining your curls by going through your hair with a curling iron.

Yet another option is to pin your hair up into a chic french roll like this style Augustine demonstrated on Phara, 28 which took less than ten minutes to do. As Augustine showed us it's much easier to recreate than it looks.

Start by dividing your hair into three sections -- two vertical halves and bangs (even if you don't have any). Then twist and pin each half at the center of the back of your head.

Next, roll the hair hanging in the back upward and pin in place. Finally, take the bangs you separated, sweep them to the side and pin in place for a smoldering, Veronica Lake-inspired look. If you've got straight hair, you may need to hot curl your bangs with a medium barrel curling iron to create a wave.
