Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 1964 Issue
The first issue of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue actually debuted in 1955 and featured Betty di Bugnano in a one-piece swimsuit. The issue did not sell well and SI put their next issue on hold until 1964 when they debuted the first cover featuring a white bikini. The issue is credited with making the bikini a serious piece of apparel.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 1994 Issue
The 90's ushered in a new type of model and a new faces to the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition but before SI could close that chapter, they featured iconic models Katy Ireland, Elle Macpherson and Rachel Hunter sitting poolside in the 1994 issue. Macpherson and Ireland were featured on multiple issues but this was Hunter's first and only cover.

It's that time of year again! The highly-anticipated Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition cover has been released and this year's lucky lady is ... Kate Upton (again)! Sports Illustrated chose the 20-year-old model for the second year in a row, revealing the cover via twitter with the comment, "POLAR BARE: @KateUpton in Antarctica is your 2013 SI Swimsuit Cover Model!" Brr, at least she gets to wear a jacket in that cold Antarctic weather... well, kinda.
In honor of this reveal, we take a look back at some of the best Sports Illustrated Swimsuit covers off all time! From Tyra to Bar, the Swimsuit edition cover has been graced by some of the most beautiful women in the entire world. Since its inception in 1964, some have credited Sports Illustrated with making the bikini a serious piece of apparel. To date, the best selling issue has been the 1989 issue featuring Kathy Ireland in Mexico wearing a yellow bandeau bikini.
