The majority of skin cancers occur on the head, neck, and backs of hands because they're the areas with the highest amount of lifetime sun exposure, says Dr. Cynthia Bailey, president and CEO of Advanced Skin Care and Dermatology Physicians. She recommends applying a third of a teaspoon of SPF 30 or higher to your face and to make sure the sunscreen is labeled "broad spectrum," meaning it blocks UVA rays too.
Dermatologist Dr. Katie Rodan (one-half of the skin-savvy Rodan + Fields product line) also has tips for keeping skin healthy and protected.
- Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going into the sun and again within the first 15 minutes after going outside as well.
- If you'll be in the sun for a while, reapply every hour and a half or two hours. To help you remember, set an alarm on your phone.
- Keep a Sun Emergency Kit. It should include an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, a pair of sunglasses, a broad-rimmed hat, a large lightweight scarf, and two aspirin to take immediately after sun exposure if you feel a burn coming on.
