When anticipating a Chanel show, one's mind can go anywhere. Is Karl Lagerfeld going to go literal and give us an interpretation of a place or period? Will there be wild makeup? Out of this world hair? Clever minaudieres that will set Tumblr a-storm?

For fall 2014 haute couture, Lagerfeld pared back his over-the-top tendencies and presented a collection focused on shape. Reportedly inspired by Le Corbusier's apartment (per a Vanessa Friedman tweet), Lagerfeld cloaked his models in stiff boat necks, tweed bike shorts under long coats and skirts, evening dresses with flared pannier hips, patterned dresses with a seemingly plastic texture and arm-bands of feathery fluff. The prevalent shape of garment evolved from something slightly flared at the mid-section into a full egg-shape by the shows end -- a full life cycle of Chanel.

Models wore street urchin-like hats low on the backs of their heads with their ponytails flipped forward to look like Kiera Knightley circa 2005. Not a single heeled shoe walked during the presentation; instead there were thong sandals and over-the-knee boots, both with bows tied around the ankles.

The showstopper of the collection (other than Kendall Jenner's second appearance on a Chanel runway) was the final look, a wedding dress for a pregnant bride modeled by Ashleigh Good, Lagerfeld's muse who is actually pregnant in real life. She gave Lagerfeld a peck on the cheek before walking with him hand-in-hand. Could the Kaiser be getting soft and ditching the spectacle? Honestly, we'd be OK with that for a little while.
