How shall we put this? We were a little let down by how many starlets opted for simple, flowing tresses at this year's red carpet awards shows. (Think Julia Roberts' beachy waves, Sofia Vergara's shiny, Rita Hayworth-esque curls, and Naomi Watts' sleek, side-parted bob.) However, despite many of the hopefuls' rather classic choices, as always the majority of nominees were of the Dolly Parton "higher the hair, the closer to God" school of thought.

Of course, we doubt it was the actress' superstitions that cause them to pile it high. An inventive updo prevents hair from obstructing designer-loaned jewelry, keeps meticulously made-up faces flyaway-free, and complements plunging gowns.

Thanks to the endless trove of red carpet inspiration, awards season is the perfect time to seek out new, easy updos for long hair. While we may not have celebrity hairstylists Laini Reeves and Adir Abergel at our beck and call, it's easy to achieve these coifs with nothing more than a how-to and a hand mirror.
