We had the chance to sit down with Somsack to pick his brain on his personal style, inspiration, and much more!
Where do you get your style inspiration?
Literally, all over the place. I'm most inspired when I'm traveling and soaking up different people, place and perspectives. My favorite cities? Paris, Tokyo and, of course, New York. Tokyo always stands out because its so different than what I'm used to seeing. There's one side of Japanese culture that's so restrained and ceremonial and then there's this whole other harajuku girl crazy side; Every time I visit I always return inspired.
What are you currently inspired by?
Stripes, military, neutrals, Instagram, Kate Moss (during the Johnny Depp years). I rarely gravitate towards just one idea, instead I combine everything together to set the mood for a collection. For Fall 13 we looked to traditional Scottish dressing, military uniforms, old victorian underpinnings, varsity graphics and motorcycle culture.
Tell us about yourself?
When I was 4, I moved from Thailand to small town outside of Toronto in Canada. There wasn't much for a creative kid to do in the blue collar automotive town I grew up in so I was really forced to use my imagination and get creative. Armed with my box of crayons I'd head to the library and spend hours creating crazy strange worlds with even crazier outfits. After high school I came to New York City to attend Parsons and start my career as a designer.
Describe your personal style.
I am a sucker for nostalgia so I gravitate towards pieces that are familiar and authentic. Whether for my closet or apartment, I can't stay away from stripes, denim, military or pieces with ethnic pieces. Some people collect stamps I collect sweatshirts and antique rugs - I have way too many to count and love them all equally.
What are three things you can't live without?
Easy - My mechanical drafting pencil .5mm hb lead please, my vintage levis from the 1930's which I found laying on the floor of a salvation army in Philly and my Instagram account.
