Pippa Middleton speaks: Her sister, the fame, the wedding and more
Pippa Middleton sat down last week for her first-ever television interview. Matt Lauer scored the piece for NBC's Today Show, and the segments are airing today and tomorrow morning. It's not just one of the first times we're hearing Pippa speak, but she delves right into her life in the spotlight -- how fame is not always easy -- and her relationship with her sister Kate.
So why hasn't the Duchess of Cambridge's younger sister ever done an interview before? "I suppose I have this... nervousness of being in front of the camera," she explained to Lauer. The lives of the Middleton family changed forever the day Kate Middleton married Prince William, becoming Britain's newest Princess. Pippa, thanks to her role as bridesmaid during the Royal Wedding (and a certain well-fitting dress), was catapulted from a normal life to one where she is followed and photographed everywhere she goes. And while she is grateful for the opportunities that have come from her proximity to the royal family, she says there have been times where she felt "publicly bullied," online and in the media.
"I have felt publicly bullied a little bit just by, you know, when I read things that clearly aren't true," she said. "It is quite difficult. Because eventually I'm just paving my way and trying to live a life like any 30-year-old."

When speaking of the Royal Wedding, which was watched by millions across the globe, Pippa said, "It sounds funny to say but we just saw it as a family wedding. I didn't realize, perhaps, the scale of it." As she, her brother and parents fell into place doing what families do for one another when nuptials are involved, Pippa said she didn't even notice the cameras in the Abbey. It all kicked in for her when the wedding party stepped onto the balcony of Buckingham Palace, greeted by thousands upon thousands of well-wishers.
And as far as that now-iconic bridesmaid dress? Pippa said the reaction was completely unexpected. The white gown was meant to simply blend in with the train of Kate's Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen wedding gown, but instead it definitely stood out. All of the attention she received from the dress, meant to be "insignificant," was "flattering," she said, "but embarrassing."
Though Duchess Kate is now living a life in the spotlight and is one of the most recognizable women in the world, Pippa says their relationship is still largely the same. On Kate, she says "I mean, obviously she has pressures that she's taken on and things. But we spend a lot of time together. We still do a lot together as a family." She's said that the close-knit nature of their family has kept them very grounded through all of this attention.
