December 2nd, in front of a crowded room of admirers and the President of the United States, funny-man David Letterman, the rock band Led Zeppelin, including John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, actor Dustin Hoffman, Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy, and ballerina Natalia Makarovo were honored with the nation's highest award for those who have influenced American culture through the arts: the Kennedy Center Honor.
When talking about the honoree's, President Obama said, "they have inspired us to see things in a new way, to hear things differently, to discover something within us or to appreciate how much beauty there is in the world."
All six male honorees arrived on the red carpet wearing black tuxedos with a black bow tie, while ballerina Natalia Makarova arrived in a floor length red dress with matching head scarf. Meanwhile, First Lady Michelle Obama looked stunning in an intricate belted gold dress.
Past recipients of the Kennedy Center Honor include Meryl Streep, Oprah Winfrey, and Paul McCartney.
