There's no question about it: Whitney Houston was a legend. The world was nothing short of devastated when news broke that she had passed away in February of 2011. Today, August 9th, would have been Whitney's 50th birthday.

One of the world's best-selling artists, the Guinness Book of World Records named Houston the most awarded female act of all time in 2009. Just about every female singer aspires to be like Whitney, she had an unparalleled voice.

Her first acting role came as the lead female in The Bodyguard, and the single that came from that movie ("I Will Always Love You") was the best-selling single by a female artist ever... of all time. And rightfully so, because we're pretty sure every one of us has had a ballad-belting moment in the shower with that song!

Whitney didn't just leave a mark on our hearts because of her incredible talent, but she is also the inspiration behind some of our favorite artists. Whitney broke down barriers for black women in music in the '80s just like Michael Jackson did for men, paving the way for many other successful careers. Among countless performers, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion have both cited Houston as a huge inspiration for their music. And shortly after Whitney passed, Beyonce posted about how all performers wanted to be like Whitney: "She is our queen and she opened doors and provided a blueprint for all of us."

She's greatly missed, but her music lives on! Click through the gallery above to see Whitney's style transformation through the years. Hint: like any true performer, she loved a little sparkle.
