Beauty tutorials are big on YouTube -- a search for "makeup tutorial" and "hair tutorial" yields more than 5 million videos. In this weekly series, we put a mix of popular and under-the-radar tutorials to the test and show you what's best.

A few weeks ago, Lauren Conrad - the "Laguna Beach" and "The Hills" star turned style, beauty and lifestyle mogul - called out Allure magazine, which featured her on the cover in April, for describing her signature beauty look "basic." As in "basic bitch?" Ouch.

Whether or not you agree with Allure's claim, there's no denying that Conrad has carved out a niche for herself in the highly-saturated beauty space. She runs a successful DIY site called The Beauty Department, as well as an eponymous online hub whose coverage runs the gamut from fitness to fashion -- not to mention she has a dedicated social media following with millions of fans across multiple platforms. So, it's safe to say she's doing something right, and one of those things is her go-to hairstyle of beachy, California girl waves that women everywhere (including myself) wish they could copy.

In a new tutorial on her site, Conrad breaks her look down into a few simple steps, which makes getting her enviable locks seem within the realm of possibility. As someone who's grown up with unruly curls that I've had to learn to tame - often with tools like a curling iron and lots of hairspray - this short video makes the years of trial and error I've faced seem pretty silly.

Conrad has a knack for making things look easy, and all you need to get her undone waves are some hair clips, a curling iron and some products (the ones she used in this case seem to have been given promotional consideration) that you likely already have in your arsenal. Plus, this method seems much less complicated than fiddling with hot rollers - something I am admittedly terrible at.

Basic or not, these curls are really damn pretty.
